Half-glazed door in second bay in Tuscan pilaster-and-entablature surround, Outer bays almost covered by added 2-storey canted bays with canted hipped roofs. All windows sashes with glazing bars, those in inner bays in architraves. Reproduction gothick glazing in beads. Sundial with Surtees' initials at 1st floor centre. Outer bays linked by balustraded loggia on 3 Tuscan columns. Coped gables with moulded kneelers, stepped-and-corniced end and ridge stacks of 2 or 3 conjoined shafts. Right return 2 gabled bays, the left set slightly forward, with Venetian window; other windows round-arched sashes, all in raised stone surrounds. Right, rear wing and far right tall garden wall with moulded stone coping, curving forward to pier with moulded cap and cast-iron urn with gadrooning and pomegranate finial. Left return rendered, with some Yorkshire sashes. Interior largely altered C19 and C20. Former servants' hall in rear wing has late C17 plaster ceiling with central Tudor rose, and segmental-arched fireplace (brick voussoirs) with old bread oven and set pot in arched recess. Right part, set back, 2 bays with central renewed door in alternating-block surround; windows altered C20. Rear elevation: stable with 2 circular windows, central gabled bay showing massive roughly-shaped quoins and cut-back brick beehive oven; cottage to left shows blocked lst-floor door in heavy block surround. Interior: central part of range (tack room with cottage bedroom above) has large ground-floor fireplace with massive chamfered lintel and domed brick oven inside on left; blocked doorway (visible from inside stable) has flattened triangular head in chamfered square frame. Roof of this part retains old principal-rafter truss with high collar, ridge and 2 levels of purlins. The central part of the range is the north end of the main block of the old Healey Hall, largely demolished in 1834. Ground and 1st floor windows in architraves; later copy inserted between ground floor windows. Plate-glass sashes or C20 casements. Hipped roof. At right is the end of a loggia with paired Tuscan antae. At left is a 2-storey link to Chapel (q.v.). Right return of south wing 5 bays, similar fenestration above loggia, which has later glazing except in 1st bay. Stepped and corniced ridge stack with conjoined shafts. Right part of south front 7 bays, similar fenestration and detail except for glazed double doors in pedimented doorcase in bay 4 and C19 alteration to bays 6 and 7; tall sash window in moulded surround with pedimented hood on brackets. East front, 2 storeys, the lower taller, 8 bays. 4-bay left part has tripartite bay with Tuscan pilasters; projecting 4-bay right part has tall ground-floor sashes in moulded surrounds with pedimented hoods on brackets. Coursed rubble with dressings; slate and stone- flagged roofs; stone chimneys. 4 ranges with corner towers around a rectangular courtyard; nursery wing on north-east tower. Castellated style. Mainly C19 fenestration and embattled parapets. Embattled west front. Buttressed 2-storey hall range: early C17 ogee-headed doorway to cross-passage (possibly re-set early C13 pointed doorway facing courtyard at far end of passage); two c.1330 cross windows with cusped trefoiled heads. 3-stage early C14 L-plan south-west tower: mullioned windows; scattered loops; original parapet on head corbels with corner bartizans; slightly-taller look-out turret. L-plan stairway to 2-storey added porch on west face of tower. 3-stage north-west tower: small (re-set?) C13 angle buttress; windows with arched heads; taller stair turret; single-storey, 2-bay addition on north. Embattled south front. Early C14 tower (q.v.) at west. 3-bay centre with taller 2-storey semicircular bay and tower on east have mainly grouped lights with arched heads. Porch on south face of east tower has 4-centred archway and battered angle buttresses. L-plan stair and screen wall on east return of porch. Buttressed 2-storey, 4-bay east range: mullioned windows with cinquefoil heads; pointed doorway; low-pitched stone-flagged roof. Taller north-east tower has similar details as south-east tower. 2-storey, 4-bay nursery wing has mainly mullioned windows with arched heads, crowstepped east gable and 2-storey semicircular bay on rear. North range partly hidden by later outbuildings (q.v.) may incorporate earlier masonry; flanking east and west towers already described. Single-storey wing incourtyardlinkseast and west ranges. Tall buttressed gateway in front of castle forecourt has 4-centred arch under hoodmould. 3. Low circular-plan bastion at south-west corner. 4. Gateway near south-east corner has wide 4-centre arch; lower section on west with pointed doorway. 5. Low circular-plan bastion at south-east corner. 6. Square-plan entrance block with agent's house set back on east and L-plan north range and house, with wall enclosing small yard, on west. Tudor style c.1880 details. Mainly 2- and 3-light mullioned windows under hoodmoulds. 2-bay entrance block incorporates medieval fabric especially in east will: 4-centred moulded doorway (in square frame with foliage-carved spandrels under hoodmould) and 3-light window on front. 2-bay agent's house has window with re-set cable-moulded surround on front and projecting bay window on east return. 2-storey occupied house at west has one-bay front and 2-bay returns: 2-light first-floor-oriel window on front; embattled parapets; medieval fabric (including ground-floor room with rubble ceiling and external wall footings) at north-west corner. Wall enclosing yard has central round archway and incorporates re-set carved Roman and medieval fragments. 2-storey, 6-bay north range with 2-bay rear elevation of agent's house at east: 2- and 3-light windows and embattled parapet on 6-bay section; 3-light windows with arched heads on agent's house. Archway and former stable block (now restaurant) on west return of occupied house are not of special interest. Apart from the occupied house and north range, the remains are in a derelict condition.
