South elevation 3 storeys, 4 irregular bays. 3 steps to glazed door in bay 2; tripartite sashes to lower floors except for 12-pane sashes above door and on 2nd floor. All windows renewed; all openings to lower floors in raised stone surrounds; 2nd floor windows in flush surrounds. Coped gables with moulded kneelers; end and ridge stacks rebuilt on old bases. Single-storey 2-bay outbuilding:at right a boarded door in moulded surround with cusped panels in spandrels of flattened triangular head; and chamfered 3-light mullioned window; at left a margined sash. Rebuilt ridge stack. Left return of house shows projecting stepped stack flanked by 12-pane sashes to 2nd floor, and right oval attic light cut in one stone. Right return and rear show 2- and 3-light mullioned windows, some with hoodmoulds, including 3-light transomed stair window; some possibly re-set. Rear wing with 12-pane sashes links to former outbuilding of c.1800, which shows 2 boarded doors in alternating-block surrounds. Interior: western ground floor room has large 4-centred arched fireplace with contemporary foliate plaster bosses at rear (c.f. Ovingham Old Vicarage). Eastern room has 2 fireplaces with moulded lintels harried on corbels, and good C17 panelling; doorway to stair with 4-centred arch and hoodmould. Open-well stair with closed string, barley-sugar balusters and moulded ramped handrail, the newels consisting of groups of 4 balusters. Panelling and stair are said to have been brought from Dilston Hall, in the mid-C18. Another 4-centred doorway at 1st floor level; roof has principal-rafter collared trusses with carpenters' marks. Interior of outbuilding, reputedly a chapel, shows arched recess (now in lavatory) said to be piscina. Ground floor doorway has flattened Tudor arch in square frame, lintel inscribed 'T.S. 1662'; and altered 2-light mullioned window. On 1st floor 2 2-light mullioned windows with Cl9 leaded lights and coloured glass margins; two small chamfered- surround windows above. To right of foldyard a single storey range, to left a 2-storey range with cottage. Foldyard divided by wall running to central loose-box with segmental-arched gable entrance. Low flag-roofed structure attached to right return of threshing barn has boarded door giving access to large waterwheel in pit beneath barn floor. To right rear of main range is attached smithy with ashlar stack. Segmental-arched cart entrances, and part-glazed part-slatted windows. Gables of threshing barn have round windows and block finials. A well-preserved group of buildings, the waterwheel, which retains its drive shafts and gearing, being of especial interest; the smithy also retains most of its fittings. , 2013-01-29 1985-08-23

Rubble, long roughly-shaped quoins, C20 asbestos roof. 2 storeys and attic, 2 bays. Off-centre late C17 blocked door with chamfered jambs and remains of inscribed or dated panel on lintel; to right a boarded door in raised tooled surround, to left a decayed 12-pane sash. 1st floor has 16-pane sash and small 6-pane fixed light; low window to attic just below eaves. To right adjacent barn has door with alternating jambs and pitching door over, slate roof. Right return of bastle, inside barn, has central blocked doorway with roughly 4-centred chamfered arch and drawbar tunnel. Rear elevation shows 1st floor window with recessed wood frame carrying stout iron bars, and to right projecting stone spout. Interior has various C18 features including fireplaces and stair. C16/C17, perhaps incorporating earlier fabric, with later alterations. Rubble, heavy quoins, stone dressings to some openings. North-west slope of roof stone flags, south-east slope slate. Both external elevations and internal walls show a variety of openings, some blocked, of different dates, including a number of doorways with monolithic flat-pointed or round-arched heads. One internal wall towards the south-west end of the range has a blocked door with a 2-centred pointed arch. The north- east gable has a blocked central door with a monolithic flat-pointed head and is capped by a square dovecote carried on a row of 4 corbels, with a pyramidal stone slate roof. The dovecote is a later adaptation of a large stack, the massive lintel of the 1st floor fireplace remaining visible internally. Monk Farm is traditionally said to be a medieval property of Hexham Priory. The range of buildings preserves a number of features of bastle house type. Stone with slate roof, 4 bays. Side walls have a vertical pair of ventilation slits to each bay and threshing doors in the third bay from the south-west. North-west door now blocked. North-east gable end has 2 tiers of 3 ventilation slits and rectangular opening in the gable. South-west end has large C20 opening. Interior divided by 3 cruck trusses, the blades springing from stone corbels 1.5m above the floor. Each truss has a collar and carries 2 purlins on each roof slope. Replaced ridge piece. Evidence of removed tie-beams and re-set collars indicates that the cruck frame is perhaps re-used from an earlier structure. Right return has central round- headed door with drawbar tunnel and socket for harr post. Left return shows boulder plinth and central chamfered loop. Rear elevation with one small 1st floor window. Although ruinous the building still displays some interesting features, notably the doorway to the ground floor byre. On right return a full- height canted bay and panelled doors under bracketed segmental hood. 4-bay right section has left 2-storey part, with mullioned windows, and right 3-storey East Tower, reputedly on foundations of medieval towerhouse. 2-storey projecting bay and stair turret, with octagonal top, behind; and squared stone wall of earlier house, refenestrated in C19. North elevation shows stable court flanked by low towers, joined by entrance screen (q.v.). Clock tower at rear recess under corbelled lintel, flanked by broad buttresses, and clock face above. C17 classical stone statues, from parapets of older house, re-set on buttresssteps and parapets. Interior: Main apartments have panelled ceilings with deep friezes and pendant bosses, and carved chimney pieces. Rib-vaulted entrance lobby and lofty main stair, with glass by Wailes. Billiard Room has lower rib-vaulted cloister on 3 sides behind arcade of moulded 4-centred arches, and roof with hammer beams, and pendant bosses: one of Dobson's best interiors. Slit windows in gables and a half-dormer in second bay. Plinth; string below coped parapet with ball and spike finials. Coped gables; stacks with conjoined hexagonal shafts. Left return shows 2-stage oriel above pointed-arched door; and 3- storey service wing (possibly incorporating older masonry) with dormers and sash windows, projecting on left. East entrance front 4 bays, the left two gabled. One-storey porch, with arcaded sides and elaborately-shaped gable, projects from first bay. Second gable is also shaped. Sashes and casements in raised surrounds and an oculus between the 2 right first-floor windows. Plain eaves; coped right gable and ridge stacks. Interior: Drawing Room with rich plaster ceiling and heraldic stained glass; similar glass in porch. closed well stair with segmental vault and ornamental plasterwork. South end has 2 windows, 1 blocked, and an oculus above. Windows in rusticated architraves with ovolo-moulded cills, friezes and cornices over; oculus in architrave. Deeply-overhanging eaves on long oak braces resting on stone corbels; chimney on gable peak. Eaves overhang even more on long elevations, the outer edges supported on similar long braces. North gable end has oculus and 1 window; west end of wing has oculus, window and door. All openings except the north window are in architraves and all but the oculi are rusticated. Interior: Entrance lobby leads to main interior space with hammer-beamed boarded roof; similar roof in wing. Corner fireplaces at west angles of main room and back-to-back in the L: architraved openings with swell frieze and cornice, and corniced overmantel block. Good half- glazed panelled internal doors and 6-panel back door in wing. Chamfered plinth, sill band, moulded eaves cornice with moulded brackets. Right bay set slightly forward; each bay has pair of 12-pane sash windows in moulded boxes. Pyramidal roof has large central stepped stack with moulded string and cornice. 2-bay left return shows similar window with blind window to right; right return shows projecting right bay with 8-pane and two 12-pane sashes; and 6-panel door on inner return. Rectangular tower-house with angle turrets. South elevation 5 storeys, 5 bays, irregular, partly concealed by ivy at time of survey. 2-storey arcade of blocked segmental-pointed arches, the central partly behind 1845 2-storey oriel with 2-light 1st floor and 3-light 2nd floor windows. 1st floor shows 2-light C19 windows to right of oriel bay; 2nd floor three 2-light C14 windows with transoms and trefoiled heads, partly renewed; elsewhere various chamfered loops. Embattled parapet with taller end turrets and corbelled-out centre turret. To left, west wing in 2 sections; slightly- projecting left part 3 storeys, 2 bays, with arched doorway; right part 2 storeys, 3 bays; 2- and 3-light transomed windows; embattled parapets. East elevation shows 1812 external stair with late C19 canopy; above left 1845 oriel to oratory; to right projecting turret with chamfered set-backs and 7 levels of chamfered loops. North elevation similar to south, with tall blocked arches and central 1845 bay. C16 2- and 3-light transomed windows with round-headed lights to 2nd floor, some restored. End turrets show corbelled-out garderobes at different levels. Interior: basement has parallel axial segmental vaults with chamfered ribs. Mural stair at east end to 1st floor, newel stair to upper floors in south-west turret. Various mural chambers including former 1st-floor entrance lobby on south, with good moulded C13 doorway, and 2nd floor oratory with piscina in south-east turret. Fittings and furnishings mostly C19, but including 2 richly- carved C17 overmantels from Derwentwater House, Newcastle. The mid-C13 hall house may have had a 2-storey hall block with a taller solar tower at the east end, the whole heightened in the C14 when the arcades (a defensive feature, meurtriere in the arch soffits protecting the wall foot) were infilled.
