Squared tooled stone with dressings; slate roofs. Front 2 storeys, 4 irregular bays. Raised quoins. Bay 3 has porch with renewed door and small casements in returns, moulded cornice and parapet. Late C19 sashes in older raised stone surrounds. 3 small rooflights. Gables have moulded kneelers and overlapped slab coping, stepped and corniced end stacks with conjoined shafts. Left return has 6-pane casement and blocked window in raised surround above; small attic window has similar surround and projecting stone bracket below. Set back to left a 2-storey rear wing in two parts: right section 1 bay, late C19 sashes, similar gable and stack; left section, 3 slightly irregular bays; French window and late C19 sashes, those to 1st floor in similar gabled half dormers. Interior: kitchen to rear retains C18 fireplace and in-situ dog wheel. The Inn was closed down c.1846 when Sir Walter Trevelyan, later first president of the United Kingdom Alliance for the Total Suppression of the Liquor Traffic, inherited the family estates. Central bay slightly recessed behind prostyle tetrastyle Ionic porch with two columns in antis in rear wall. 12-pane sash windows in architraves which extend down to plinth or band. Ground-floor windows have cornices on richly-carved consoles. Modillion eaves cornice and parapet with short central open balustrade to each bay. Hipped roof has 2 stepped and corniced stacks with quadruple shafts. Lower 4-bay service wing set back to left; 12 pane sashes, ground floor in architraves, stepped and corniced stacks to left end and on ridge. South front 5 bays, the central a full-height canted bay; similar detail. East front 5 bays, the central 3 slightly recessed; end bays have tripartite sashes. Lower service wing, set back to right,and link with conservatory (q.v.). Interior; restrained decoration with marble chimneypieces in most rooms. Imperial stair, altered by Lutyens. North range continued east as cottage, barn running north from tower links with mill. Elevations to yard: east range has double doors with 3-step mounting block to left and small projecting kennel block to right; low walls with chamfered coping carry cast-iron rails. North range: 5 stable doors, the centre 3 with 3-pane overlights, with Yorkshire sash windows between. Tower to left 3 storeys with slatted windows and pyramidal roof rising to a louvre. West range has 4 stable doors with 3-pane overlights. South ends of east and west ranges have double doors under segmental arches and coped open-pedimented gables. Cottage 2 storeys, 2 bays; flush-panelled door on south, C20 casement to right with paired renewed 12-pane sashes in half dormer above. Stepped ashlar stacks to ridge and at right end. Barn 2 storeys, 4 irregular bays, altered. Mill consists of cross-wing running west from north end of barn, and block running north, built on steep slope dropping towards river; lower lean-to wheelhouse at the foot of its tall north gable. Doorways with stop-chamfered alternating-block surrounds, open-pedimented gable to cross-wing; main north gable has circular window in gable, above band. Interior: wheelpit, millstones and internal partitions. Mill section derelict and partly ruinous at time of survey. Range of farm buildings running west from tower much altered, not of interest. South-east block to right has plinth, 1st floor band, angle pilasters and eaves cornice on block corbels; sash windows, some renewed, in raised chamfered surrounds. Interior: 2 C18 fireplaces, one Gothick, in west wing. 2 re-set mid C18 Rococo carved wood chimney pieces, said to have been brought from Wallington Hall. Decorative plaster ceilings of c.1900. Cellar under west wing has stair constructed of sills and lintels from C17 single-light windows. Central 1st floor window has broken pediment holding sundial with its own similar pediment. 4 lead rainwater heads dated 1793 with initials W M and acanthus ornament. Rusticated open-arcaded parapet has piers with ball finials. Left return has similar fenestration but different architrave moulding; 2 trompe l'oeil windows to right. Plain slab with dogtooth surround above central 1st floor window; lower section to left with blocked circular opening. Right return similar. Rear elevation irregular; projecting full-height stair turret to left of centre has flush-panelled door, in stone surround with flat-pointed arch, in square frame; and blocked 2-light mullioned windows. Renewed slab with Thornton arms and inscription ANNO REGNI EDWARD I QUINTI. Second lower stair projection to right and a lower block with weathering of high-pitched roof on wall behind, the site of former Roman Catholic Chapel. To far left block of c.l900. Squared rubble with stone dressings, slate roof. Simple rectangular plan with small vestry on north which has catslide roof. Stepped clasping buttresses at the angles, each carried up to a separate pyramidal cap; steeply-pitched roof. South wall has C14-style doorway with one lancet to the west and 3 to the east, all with chamfered hoodmoulds. 3 similar lancets on the north. The west end has a re-set C13 window of 2 pointed lights with a pierced quatrefoil over, from the east end of the old church, with C19 quatrefoil window above. Gable- end belfry on tall corbels has small pointed openings and swept octagonal turret with gabled faces carrying a fleche. The east end, with 3 stepped lancets above a moulded string course, carries a similar but smaller turret with a tall finial cross. Vestry with small lancets and pointed chamfered doorway. Interior: continuous space. The lack of fitted seating, James' intention front the first, accentuates the height of the building. Hammerbeam roof. Broad shouldered-arched recess opposite the south door. The eastern lancets have moulded trefoil rear arches; these and the triple sedilia have Frosterley marble shafts. Double-chamfered arch on heavy moulded corbels to vestry. Octagonal bowl and base of the font are medieval; perhaps C13. Marble tablet with urn, on the south wall, to William Randal Featherstonehaugh d. 1807. The church is said to have been designed by the Rev. Stone gable stack. Rear left barn has cart entrance, with tooled and margined jambs and C20 timber lintel, flanked by slit vents.
