Early C18 for the Orde family, new facade and front rooms added 1789 for William Grieve. Ashlar with concrete tile roof. Double span with staircase wing projecting to rear. 2 storeys plus basements and attics, 5 bays. 8 steps,with C20 railings, up to central 6-panel door, and fanlight with intersecting glazing bars,in open- pedimented surround with attached Tuscan columns. Basement has blank windows. Elsewhere C20 sashes in raised surrounds. Eaves cornice and 3-bay pediment. Gable roof with rendered end stacks. On each return a straight join between the two builds marked by down pipes with rainwater heads dated 1789. Lower 2-storey, 2-bay square pavilions attached to rear corners of older section. Windows in raised surrounds. Steeply-pitched swept, hipped roofs in Scottish slate. Interior. The front rooms have late-C18 interiors including, in the former dining room, (now family room), a pine fireplace with delicate gesso decoration and Ionic pilasters with Adam-style necking; palmette frieze and elaborately enriched cornice. Drawing room has a fireplace which is bolder, with enriched cornice-shelf on big scrolled brackets; plaster frieze of urns, scrolls and palmettes; enriched dentil cornice. A similar pine and gesso fireplace on 1st floor. In the rear section, an early-C18 staircase with carved tread ends, turned balusters and boldly-moulded handrail. C14 (licence to crenellate 1338), converted into mansion 1694, given Gothick detail 1761 by George Raffield for Sir John Hussey Deleval. Restored to C17 style, new north wall added and altered internally from 1862 by David Bryce for Louisa, Marchioness of Waterford. Mainly ashlar, medieval work squared stone; stone slate and graduated Lakeland slate roofs. Originally a quadrilateral castle with 4 corner towers; three of these survive but one is now detached (see the Flagpole Tower, item 17/88). Present house E-plan, 3 storeys plus attics. 5-bay centre with projecting porch tower; projecting wings with 4-storey, one-bay stair towers in re-entrant angles. Rusticated basement. Steps up to 2-leaf door. 2-light mullioned windows in basement, cross windows above. Wings have large 4- and 5-light mullioned-and-transomed windows on ground floor. 4-light window above door. C18 modillion cornice and castellated parapet. Gabled roofs with tall diagonally-set stacks of several conjoined shafts. Left return has C18 masonry to right, medieval masonry in centre and C14 King James' Tower to left with blocked arched window on 1st floor and irregular C19 openings. Rear facade has King James' Tower to right with original slit window in sub- basement, blocked window above. The centre is by Bryce with consciously irregular Gothic openings including to the right a stone balcony on large stone brackets and in the centre a large oriel on 4 huge brackets. Tower to left has old masonry with C18 quoins, perhaps a reconstruction of the late C18? Interior: King James' Tower has vaulted basement approached by stairs in thickness of wall with 2-centred arched doorways top and bottom. Pointed tunnel vault with 5 square-section transverse ribs. Walls 15 ft. thick at this level, 8 ft. thick above. On 1st floor 2 pointed-arched doorways, a C16 or C17 ceiling with stop-chamfered main beam and square close-set joists and a stone fireplace with Tudor-arched lintel and moulded surround. On 2nd floor a Gothic room of 1862; mural stair between these floors. In the angle of the east wing a restored 016 newel stair with a fragment of earlier stair in the wall beside it. Elsewhere in the house seven C16 or Cl7 stone fireplaces, one of granite with a bold incised curve in the lintel. Good Arts-and-Crafts-style doors throughout inserted by Lord Joicey, 1907. C13, extensively restored 1853 by John Dobson. Squared stone; nave has Welsh slate roof, chancel clay tile roof. Nave with aisles, south porch, chancel and north vestry; west bellcote. Three-bay nave with porch to left. Each bay has pair of lancets; drip moulds with head stops, the detail of 1853. South-west and south-east angle buttresses are medieval; the eastern one has two trefoiled niches. North aisle of 1853. West projection rising to monumental 2-tier bellcote, with paired lancet bell openings on 1st tier and single lancet above, stone pyramidal roof. Window to north of projection is an original lancet. Five-bay chancel has C19 lancets with head stops. Three-light Geometric east window. Interior: early C13 two-bay south arcade has round piers and bases, octagonal capitals and pointed double-chamfered arches; west pier has dogtooth. Octagonal responds, the west respond with a C13 head stop. North arcade and chancel arch by Dobson. West lancet has shouldered rere-arch. Trefoiled piscina in south- east corner of nave. Six medieval grave slabs or parts of slabs set in floor at west end of nave. Elaborate Decorated stone reredos of 1892 by W.S. Hicks. Three-light transomed windows with raised cable- moulded surrounds to ground floor bay 2, bay 3 and 1st floor bay 4; varied glazing. Moulded set-back clock stage with clock faces under garlands. Roman Doric bellcote with square piers distyle in antis on each side and low-pitched pyramidal roof with antefixae. Bays flanking tower have paired carriage entrances with stone lintels beneath moulded cornices; and corniced doorways between end bays. Window openings empty; all openings have chamfered surrounds. Eaves cornice with paired brackets. 4 corniced ridge stacks with conjoined shafts. West range 5 bays with similar detail. Central bay set forward with large archway; imposts, moulded keystone, modillion cornice and parapet over. Roof hipped to left. At far left lower wall with segment-headed arch links with wall closing courtyard on south. East range 4 bays, irregular fenestration. Interior: stone open-well stair in north range behind tower. Parapet and corner turrets C19. To rear the shield of the Umfravilles. Interior: Tower walls c.8 ft. thick. Basement has pointed tunnel vault entered by doorway with shouldered lintel; fine ashlar well in floor. Ground floor has high pointed tunnel vault divided into two rooms by later wall. Ground-floor entrance has tunnel-vaulted wall passage whose inner and outer doorways have pointed arches and continuous chamfers; the outer doorway now blocked. A 3rd door, with shouldered lintel, leads from this passage to base of stone newel stair. The staircase has another door also with shouldered lintel, directly into the main vaulted room. Similar original doorways lead from stairs on upper floors. Attached house had cantilevered stair with slender turned balusters. 4 pointed stone arches in hall. Snecked rock-faced stone with some cut dressings; red clay tile roof. H-plan, single-storeyed except for west part of south wing. West elevation in 3 parts; gable end of north wing on left has 3-light mullioned window above round arch for head goit; recessed centre has doorway and blocked window; gable end of south wing on right has boarded door under timber lintel, with 2-light mullioned window above; on left return is altered 3-light window with 2 cross windows above. To far right is attached retaining wall for approach ramp on south, with heavy flat coping stepping down to right. South elevation in 2 parts: left part has boarded double doors in shouldered arch with timber lintel, under gablet with shaped loop; stepped-and-banded ridge stack to right: lower right part largely concealed by approach ramp. Interior: In north wing is Thompson double vortex turbine by Williamsons of Kendal (with maker's plate). Historical Note: In 1881 Lord Armstrong coupled the turbine to a Siemens horizontal generator to produce the first hydro-electric power source in the world; this lit the first arc lamps in Armstrong's museum at Cragside, and later Joseph Swan's newly-invented incandescent lamps. North wing medieval, main block probably C16, south-east wing mid-C18; remodelled early C19. North wing coursed rubble, main block heavy rubble heightened in coursed rubble, south-east wing squared tooled stone; slate roofs. West front: main block 3 storeys, 6 irregular bays. C20 glazed door in former window opening with altered sash to left and 2 12-pane sashes to right; lst floor C20 small-paned casements in old openings, and blocked opening to left; all openings in C18 chamfered stone surrounds. 2nd floor small 12-pane Yorkshire sash beneath eaves, 2 similar windows to right and one to left now blocked. Stepped and corniced ashlar end and ridge stacks. To left, projecting end of 2-storey north wing; blocked arch with shouldered segmental head and drawbar tunnel, small chamfered window to right possibly reset, low clasping buttresses at left angle. Coped reverse-stepped gable to right, roof hip-ended to left. South front: gable end of main block shows early Cl9 sashes in older openings. South-east wing 2 storeys, 3 bays, band at lst floor level. Altered door with tall 6-pane overlight in lst bay; 12-pane sash windows. Stepped and corniced ashlar end stacks, that to right with circular stone pot. North front: various sash windows; medieval chamfered plinth which continues on left return. Rear elevation; south-east wing has projecting multi-stepped stack carrying chimney with circular stone pot. Interior; main block, early C18 fireplace in moulded stone surround, panelled shutters and 6-panel doors. North wing, west part ('the tower') has stone barrel vault and old doorway with chamfered jambs, column-on-vase stairhead balustrade. The north wing is probably a C13 or C14 undefended hall house; the 2 opposed doors indicate a passage through the solar undercroft, c.f. Burneside Hall and Lammerside Castle (Westmorland). The thick (O.95m) walls and massive rubble of the main block suggest a C16 date. , 1986-01-30 1952-05-06
