Irregular plan, Tudor Gothic style. South front 2 storeys, 3 bays. Central wide bay has canted ground- floor bay window with brattished cornice; 1st floor has central 2-light windows flanked by narrower windows. Embattled parapet, 2 stepped and corniced ridge stacks with quadripartite shafts. Flanking projecting gabled bays have 4-light ground floor and 3-light 1st floor windows,with transoms, and slits in the gables; moulded gable coping and finials. Entrance (north) front shows projecting gabled porch with moulded 4-centred arch beneath dated armorial carving; to left a projecting north-east wing built in facsimile of C19 parts, and beyond an attached wall with door to garden: oak with ornamental hinges and latchplate, in broad double-chamfered surround. To right of porch a small gabled stair wing, to far right, ground floor walls of west wing remain as screen. East (garden) front 2+1+3 bays; projecting gabled porch has 4-centred window beneath tall 3-light transomed window with leaded glazing. Right return shows earlier tumbled-in gable and an early C19 rear wing, extended later. 2 lst-floor Yorkshire sashes in earlier part, paired 12-pane sashes in later. Rear elevation shows central 20-pane sash stair window with Gothick glazing in semicircular head; trompe l'oeil window to right. Renewed door in 3rd bay (pre-1980 doorway in 2nd bay); C20 small-pane casements mostly in older openings. Coped gables with moulded kneelers, stone end and ridge stacks. Interior: walls of southern 3-bay section 0.9 m. thick, fireplace at north end with heavy oak hood bressumer formerly spanning full width of building ; roughly- chamfered transverse beams.6-bay upper-cruck roof has trusses with cambered collars, 2 levels of purlins and ridge. Added rear wing has closed-string dog- leg stair of c.1680 with turned balusters, moulded handrail and panelled newels. Plain kitchen fireplace of c.1800 at north end of main block. Prior to the recent alterations the earlier 3-bay section of the main block had a central cross passage; the ground floor walls of this part of the house were seen to be of rubble and clay construction, built on heavy timber sills. Porch, with hollow-chamfered pointed arch under coped gable, has low stone benches and door with keeled mouldings and hood with rosette stops. To east two C14 windows, each of 2trefoiled ogee-headed lights with pierced spandrels under a square head with hoodmould; large stepped buttress to east. West end has chamfered plinth and large roughly-squared masonry of C12 type; three 2-light windows and large stepped buttresses all C19. Coped gable and gabled bellcote. North wall of nave continuous with organ chamber: Four 2-light windows copied from south wall. Chapel has two similar C14 windows on south and 3-light C19 east window. Chancel has chamfered plinth; taller similar 2-light south window and coeval 3-light east window with curvilinear tracery under pointed arch with hood, flanked by stepped buttresses, that to south C19. Vestry has re-set medieval door on north with pointed chamfered arch, C13 cross slab as internal lintel. Interior: 2-bay north arcade has pointed double-chamfered arches, hooded towards nave, on round pier; moulded capital with square abacus: 3-bay arcade on south with octagonal piers. Chancel arch and arch dividing south aisle from chapel also spring from eastern pier. Cut-back stoup by south door; hollow-chamfered piscina in south chapel. Chancel has C19 arch to organ chamber and moulded sill string on east,stepped down at south end. Sill of south window lowered to form sedilia with integral shelf and pillar piscina; second piscina to east has trefoiled hollow-chamfered arch, shelf and lockers. Squared stone with dressings; slate roofs except for stone slates to south porch and boiler house. 4-bay aisled nave with west tower and south porch, chancel, Tower in 3 stages has moulded plinth and strings; stepped set-back buttresses. C15 3-light west window with pierced panel tracery; wide lancets to 2nd stage, blocked except on south; paired lancet belfry openings with octagonal column mullions. Parapet on stepped corbels. West aisle lancets, northern partly hidden by C19 boiler house. South aisle wall 5 bays, north 4 bays; C19 paired lancets. Porch has C19 pointed arch set in larger round-headed double-chamfered openings; C18 panelled double doors. Coped gable with C18 tilted sundial as finial, small rectangular windows in returns, stone benches. Doorway has keeled and chamfered pointed arch, with colonnettes, bold dog tooth on hoodmould, jambs and external angles of door projection. Clerestory on south only; 3 low 2-light mullioned windows. East aisles lancets, to south of southern 1757 headstone affixed to wall. Massive eastern angle quoins of Pre-conquest nave exposed, on south tooled to resemble coursed masonry. Chancel 3 bays. Lancets on south and low-side lancet at west end, with traces of blocked door to right and old studded priest's door under shouldered arch. East end has triplet of lancets. Stepped buttress bay divisions throughout. Interior: Small doorway under round-headed window set in blocked round tower arch, itself an insertion; remains of earlier arched doorway above. Lower stage of tower barrel-vaulted with newel stair at north-west angle. Pointed double-chamfered nave arcades on octagonal piers with moulded capitals and bases; central pier on south has beaded abacus. South aisle east lancet has elaborate shouldered rear arch. Trefoiled piscina in south aisle and smaller piscina cut in east respond of north arcade. Pointed chancel arch of 2 orders. Enriched trefoiled piscina, triple sedilia and second smaller trefoiled piscina. Eastern lancets have tall ringed jamb shafts and moulded rear arches. C13 font: circular bowl on pillar with 3 smaller shafts. Memorials: Frosterley marble slab in chancel with Lombardic inscription to Sir Thomas de Errington, c.1310: C17 and C18 ledger stones; Monument to Mary Ann Bradford, d.1830, reclining figure by F. Chantrey; other C19 memorial slabs. Carved reredos and pulpit of Caen stone, 1890. Flags from Napoleonic War hang in chancel. Medieval stone coffins and Jacobean almsbox in south aisle. 2 medieval bells. The building appears to be listed twice on the National Heritage List for England under List entries 1041491 and 1371061. The entry published in volume 1396 shall be removed. Large blocks of roughly- dressed stone. A triangular bastion c.30 yards long with a square-plan projection at the apex. The wall is c.8 ft. high, with 16 gun loops. The front of the square projection has 3 crenellations. The wall ends in 2 turrets c.6 ft. square with doorways on inner returns, rough projecting cornices and rough, stone pyramidal roofs. They are c.15 ft. high. The fort stands on cliffs in a dramatic position and was formerly thought to be a defence of c.1746 against possible Jacobite invasion. Left kennel section, with parapet front, has 3 ledged and boarded doors, an inserted quasi-medieval window and a pointed fixed light above the central door. Small kennel enclosure at left with wrought-iron railing on dwarf wall. Central 5-bay section has garage doors in 4th bay; 3 left bays originally open, now infilled and with large C20 casements. Central raised parapet on console brackets with date 1915. 2 lion masks attached at eaves. Right bay incorporated into added projecting cottage with 2 bays on inner return. Studded plank door with interlaced overlight; 2- and 3-light casement windows, those to new wing in rock-faced surrounds; 2 more lion masks between them. Walls brick in English Garden Wall Bond 1 and 4, with rubble external face except on east; cottage coursed rubble; garden buildings brick except for timber-framed greenhouse on brick base; cut dressings. Cottage roof stone flags; garden buildings roofed with red clay tiles. Garden an irregular pentagon in plan, open to south-east. From south-west corner a 30-metre length of brick-faced wall continues south-west to join tall stone wall (q.v.) running towards the Hall. West wall of garden has ledged and boarded door with interlaced head in archway with raised stone surround, keystone and imposts. Cottage at rear of wall 1 storey + attic, 2 bays. Vertical-panelled door with narrow latticed overlight at left; 4-light flat- faced mullioned window at right, glazing altered. Inserted raking dormer; ridge stack. Through-stones on left return, and 2 windows with flattened Tudor-arched heads to lights. North-west wall of garden, reducing in thickness at mid-height, has flat coping and sloped buttresses to rear. North wall of garden has 2 doors with interlaced ribs, in stone surrounds with grotesque masks on keystones; re-set sundial inscribed FEARE GOD AND OBAY THE KING, and stone-blocked heating ducts. To rear a range of single-storey buildings, some pent and some gabled, have round-arched lights with fancy glazing, doors with interlaced ribs, stepped and cogged eaves, and inserted ornamental brackets; at east end a T-shaped greenhouse with fluted posts, mouded and dentilled cornice, and carved spandrels. East wall of garden, collapsed at south end, has boldly-projecting buttresses to rear, with inserted ornamental brackets. Included for group value. Low square platform incorporating a variety of C17/18 architectural fragments. Column has plain square plinth and moulded circular base encircled by self- swallowing serpent; smooth tapering shaft. Capital with scrolled necking carrying corniced square block. Cylindrical altar with curved fluting above bears eternal flame; overall height c.15 metres.
