Interior: Drawing room has late C17 panelling with bolection-moulded fireplace and dado rail, moulded skirting boards and cornice. Dining room has similar panelling, and early C17 stone fireplace with multi-moulded surround and Tudor- arched lintel. Study has fireplace with bolection-moulded surround and Delft tiles. West door with one order of columns and chevron moulding in the arch. 2 small original windows above. Several other C12 windows on returns also several C14 cusped windows. Bell stage added C14. Nave and aisles. 3 bays. Vestiges of C12 masonry; extended C13 (see masonry at west end) and again in C15. South aisle has two 3-light segmental-headed Perpendicular windows. South porch C13, reset; slightly-pointed doorway; pointed tunnel vault inside with 3 chamfered transverse ribs. North aisle rebuilt 1810 using old masonry. Low parapets and shallow,pitched roofs. Transpets: South transept rebuilt late C15 with Perpendicular east window. North transept C13, the gable rebuilt in C19; 3 tall lancets on north and east sides. Chancel: Long C13 chancel withchamferedsill string rising to form hoodmould over segmental priest's door. 2 original lancets on north side, C14 Decorated windows elsewhere. Interior: C15 south arcade with octagonal piers and double-chamfered arches dying into imposts. Similar north arcade of 1810. C13 chancel arch has re-cut corbels of Adam and Eve, before the fall on the south, after the fall on the north. North transept north windows have shouldered rere-lintels; the east windows have shouldered rere-arches. C14 glass fragments in chancel window heads. Trefoiled piscina in frame of dogtooth. Consciously asymmetrical facade. 2 storeys, 6 bays. No. 5 has door with cornice and 2-light window above under gable; canted bay window to left. No. 6 has door with segmental head and canted bay window over; bay window to right. Hipped roof with 4 gables of varying sizes; and over right bay a large Flemish gable. 3 corniced stacks. Recent extension to right is not of special interest Block 7-8: almost symmetrical; only the doors break the symmetry. Door to No. 7 is in a 2-storey porch while door to No. 8 has a canted oriel over. Single- storey bay windows in outer bays. 2- and 3-light windows in moulded wood frames. Tooled-and-margined ashlar with plinth. Scottish slate roof. Greek Revival style. Square with lower 2-storey service wing projecting to rear on left return and conservatory projecting to rear on right. 2 storeys, 3 bays. 8 swept steps with side railings which are wreathed around ashlar piers. 2-leaf, half-glazed door in recessed porch with Doric antae and cornice. 12-pane margined sashes with moulded sills on ground floor. 1st floor sill band and 6-pane margined sashes. Cornice and blocking course. Hipped roof with 2 large ridge stacks. To rear: doorway into service wing has pedimented Doric entablature. Large 24-pane margined sash stair window. Interior: Entrance hall; screen of 2 Doric columns. Cast iron balusters said to have been brought from elsewhere. Plain stone door surrounds framed by incised line ending Greek key patterns. Coffered ceiling with triglyph frieze. Dining room: Ornate plaster ceiling with wreaths of vines and ivy; multi- moulded frieze and cornice. White marble fireplace with round arch and keystone carved with vines; vines in the spandrels also. 2 doorcases (one framing a niche) with fluted pilasters, elaborate brackets, palmette friezes and enriched cornices. This niche and the larger serving niche have elaborate Rococo-style built-in tables. The serving niche has fluted surround and large built-in mirror in frame of palmettes, gilded pelmet. Sitting room has similar elaborate ceiling. Wood fireplace with frieze of scrolls and shells. Study has stone fireplace with colonettes and square dentil capitals; pedimented lintel with acroteria; coat of arms in the pediment and foliage in the acroteria. , 1986-08-22 1986-08-22

Tudor-Gothic style. 2 storeys plus attics, 5 x 3 bay front block with 2 lower projecting wings to rear. 3-bay entrance side has taller castellated centre bay. Moulded plinth. Castellated porch with Tudor-arched doorway. Above is a tall 5-light window with 2 transoms, pointed-arched heads to lights, and hoodmould. Centre bay flanked by buttresses which rise to form corniced turrets above central tower. Flanking bays have tripartite windows under hoodmoulds. Addition to left of one tall storey, one bay, has 3-light mullioned-and-transomed chapel window with arched heads to lights. Tall parapet with 4-light pierced panels of Gothic tracery above each bay. Hipped roof with octagonal ridge stacks of 5 conjoined shafts with castellated tops. Right return: 5 bays with tripartite windows in Tudor-arched recesses with floating cornices. Boldly moulded top cornice. Similar parapet. Interior: Open-well stair, the lower parts, possibly by Hanson, have twist balusters and beasts on the newels; the upper part Dobson with little Gothick pointed arches. Chapel by Dobson has panelled ceiling on 5 moulded Tudor arches with decorative corbels; open-work Gothic reredos. Library has built-in Gothic book shelves. Natural hill scarped and ditched to produce motte carrying irregular oval inner ward containing pentagonal keep, with triangular outer ward to south and east and barmkin to north-east. Inner ward: tall curtain,on stepped plinth, remains on west, with large round arch perhaps to a balcony. Section of wall on east with round arch to outer ward, is largely C19 reconstruction. Keep stands to 1st floor but external facing wholly robbed. Basement divided by axial cross wall into 2 barrel- vaulted chambers; impost band at spring of vault, internal stone spouts (bringing in rainwater; the chambers were probably intended as cisterns), segmental-arched doorway to mural stair. 1st floor has chamfered plinth, and is entered via lobby from external stair. To west of keep footings of possibly earlier 'blockhouse' with splayed arrow loops. Historical Notes. Described as the oppidum of William Bertram in 1138. Seized by Flemish troops of King John in 1215. In 1315 the scene of kidnappings and the holding of prisoners to ransom by Sir Gilbert de Middleton. Brattished tie-beam with inscription and panel tracery above under trefoiled ogee bargeboards. Swept eaves, wrought-iron cross fleury on ridge. Double gates with fleur-de-lys standards and more elaborate finials. Collar rafter roof with date and initials J.P.0.M. (Colonel John Philip Osbaldeston-Mitford) on rafter feet. Possibly Saxon quoins at west end of nave, also blocked Saxon, early Romanesque arch in west wall of tower. Elsewhere C13, extensively restored 1847 by Benjamin Ferrey. Squared stone and ashlar with fish-scale tile roof. Tower, nave with aisles, chancel and vestry. Tower: 3 storeys. Small lancets on ground and 1st floor; paired-lancet bell opening with roll-moulded surround and central column with waterleaf capital. 4-bay nave with 2 lancets to each bay. Buttresses between the bays. The detail all of 1847. 3-bay chancel is more clearly of re-used C13 masonry. The plinth, priests' door and string are Ferrey's but the windows seem original (cf. interior). East end has 3 stepped lancets. North vestry has picturesque tall octagonal chimney with pyramidal cap. Interior: porch has 3 medieval grave covers and part of C15 tomb with 2 angels bearing shield. Round rere-arches to tower lancets. Arcade of double-chamfered arches re-cut but original; the octagonal piers are replacements. West piers have heavily-restored stiff-leaf capitals. West responds and slightly-ogival tower arch are original. Chancel arch and east responds have triple-shafted corbels. Chancel windows with roll-moulded surrounds, and east window with multi-.moulded surround. Trefoiled piscina. Chancel south side: segmental niche with effigy of knight; north side segmental niche with dogtooth and effigy of priest. Also in chancel half a C13 effigy of knight, wall tablet to Dixon family 1721 and later, with coat of arms. North aisle: John Swinburne, 1653; large standing monument with Baroque carving in the style of Capheaton Hall. South aisle: part of C14 relief of the crucifixion built into east wall; also a painted cartouche to Wm. Akenside, and Sam his son, 1776. , 1969-04-28 1969-04-28
