C12. Bellcote probably C17. Nave partly rebuilt mid C19 at same time as south porch was added. Dressed stone. Porch ashlar. Welsh slate roof. Stone slates on bellcote. Nave, chancel, south porch, north vestry and west bellcote. West end has massive offset buttress in centre of wall. Gabled double bellcote above is slightly projecting and projects again below square-headed chamfered bell openings. 3-bay nave with 2-light Victorian Perpendicular windows. Chancel has blocked priest's door and one small C12 window north and one south. East end has angle buttresses with offsets and one lancet window. Interior: Unmoulded C12 chancel arch on simple chamfered imposts. Similar arch, formerly apse arch, frames east end. Chancel is tunnel-vaulted with the deeply- splayed C12 windows cut into the vault. Plain chamfered frieze, also C12, marks base of vault. Shouldered rere arch to east lancet. Door to loft above chancel arch. C13 round bowl font on circular stem with C17 font cover. Nave and chancel north walls blank. Three plain stepped lancets on chancel south side. East window is 3 stepped lancets under hoodmoulds. Blocked priest's door and north door, probably early C17, are square-headed with chamfered surround. Interior has C12 unmoulded chancel arch on plain chamfered imposts. Pointed arch to blocked priest's door. East window has shafts and shaft rings. Inscribed stone on chancel north wall, C8, with a cross and letters ORPE. By R.L. Armstrong. Ashlar. Inscribed plinth with statue above. 2-stage square base has rounded top edge with leafy carving. Square column above with cable-moulded edges and inscription: Erected by the workers of Prudhoe Colliery in memory of John Wormald aged 57 years who accidentally lost his lefe on the first day of June 1874 on the engine plane while following his vocation as overman in Prudhoe Colliery. A constant friend to those under his charge and a man of an affectionate and amiable disposition and endeared to all who knew him. Above this a concave cornice with leaf carving and the figure of the deceased kneeling on one knee with his elbow resting on his other knee. Very rustic carving. , 2013-01-29 1985-03-07

Front block right bay C15, the rest mainly various C17 dates and early C19 but probably with medieval core. Mainly squared stone with Welsh and stone slate roof. 2 storeys. L-shaped. Front block has doorway right of centre. 4 later semicircular steps up to roundheaded door with moulded imposts and pendant keystone. 2 windows left and one right, formerly 4-light mullioned but now all but ground floor left are early C20 casements in original chamfered reveals. Moulded ground floor string rising above door. Also first floor string. This facade early/mid C17. On right return a 2-light C15 window with cusped heads. Projecting wing to rear has date 1694 for Thomas Addison over door with TA flattened Tudor arch in square chamfered surround. Also large projecting chimney breast, partly renewed, projecting brick bread oven, one mullioned window and various later windows. Rear of this wing has various C18-C20 sashes under C17 hoodmoulds. Rear of front block is early C19 thickening with 12- and 6-pane sashes but incorporating a C17 two-storey porch with Tudor-arched doorway. Panel above door in memory of John Bigge, killed 1919. Gabled roofs with one stone corniced end stack, one similar ridge stack and 2 rebuilt stacks. Interior has blocked, possibly late medieval, doorway with broadly-chamfered surround and flat lintel with rounded shoulders. This has drawbar tunnels and was probably an outside door. It is in right ground floor room with C15 window. Large fireplace in centre ground floor room has flattened Tudor arch and plaster reliefs of oak leaves inside fireplace. Further large segmental-headed fireplace in former kitchen with nailhead on each voussoir. Early C19 staircase but stone newel of former stair remains. Plaster frieze in upper room with pairs of affronted dragons; and fleurs de lys in corners of ceiling. The house was a cell of Hexham Abbey. Three Jacobean Houses by H. Ground floor windows are late C19 sashes in early C19 openings with projecting sills and tooled and margined ashlar lintels. Small 1st floor windows are late C19 sashes in original openings. Blocked doorway under relieving arch on left return. Rear span raised to 2 storeys from older outshut in early C19. Steeply pitched gabled front span has two C19 brick end stacks. C16 core, altered and extended late C17 or early C18. Refronted and altered c1790. Further additions and alterations c1880. Ashlar facade and dressings. Large random rubble in older parts, random rubble elsewhere. Welsh slate roof. T-shaped with later C19 additions to both sides of rear wing. Front block has walls c4 feet thick. 2 storeys plus attic. 3-bay front has central 6-panelled door and fanlight with intersecting glazing bars in doorcase with Tuscan columns, and open pediment. Ground floor windows are late C19 canted bays. Central 1st floor window in swept shouldered architrave, other 1st floor windows plain; margined sashes. Ground and 1st floor sill bands and ground floor lintel band. Moulded cornice breaks forward over central window. Plain parapet. 2 dormer windows. Right return has blocked ground-floor doorway, probably a bastle door with rounded jambs and triangular head. Also similar blocked 1st floor doorway and old, roughly-arched wood relieving beam to former fireplace. Rear wing has tall round-arched staircase window with intersecting glazing bars, and flat raised surround with fluted keystone. Rear of house now appears largely late C19. Gabled roofs with steep pitches, flat coping and kneelers to older parts. Stone gable and ridge stacks. Interior has late C18 stair with finely-moulded handrail and turned newels, six-panelled doors and internal shutters. Roof of old part has curved oak principals with ridge piece and old purlins. Largely C12 and C13. Barbican C14. Manor house early C19. Squared stone. Manor house dressed stone and stone slate roof. Inner and outer baileys now divided by Gothick manor house, keep and gatehouse with barbican. Castle approached by elongated barbican with outer pointed arch leading to round-headed tunnel-vaulted gate passage under rectangular tower. Chapel on 1st floor important early canted oriel window, lancet windows on east side; guard room above and external stair from ground to roof. Curtain wall largely intact with a variety of features connected with former internal buildings, the foundations of which have recently been exposed, and including shouldered- arched opening to well-preserved garderobe on south side. East tower, Gothicised in late C18. Manor house of 2 storeys, 5 bays, has to left a round-arched carriage entry to inner ward. 6-panelled door with four-centred head and fanlight in right bay. Similar heads to windows, sashes with intersecting glazing bars. Left return embattled and incorporating earlier masonry with two 2-light C15 windows. Right return apsidal and embattled. 3 stone ridge stacks. Inner bailey has well-preserved curtain wall with round tower at north-west corner and base of another at south-west corner. Ruined keep, linked to Manor House by remains of forebuilding, is quite small, 41 x 44 feet. South-west corner intact with crenellated angle turret. Mural stair in west wall and 2 shouldered-arched openings in north wall. Well-preserved garderobe on north curtain wall. Range of early and mid C19 outbuildings against west wall. South doorway is C18, round-headed with impost blocks and keystone. East window is 3-light Victorian Perpendicular. C18 west bellcote has rusticated sides and flat top with ball finial. Lower vestry has paired lancets on south wall and tall stone chimney on gable end. Coped gabled roof with rounded C18 kneelers. Interior has king-post roof with angle-and V-struts. Centre section has part-glazed Victorian door under hoodmould and 15-pane sashes with thick glazing bars in architraves; except 3 central 1st floor windows which are later 12-pane sashes. Plain parapet. Tower on right has Georgian core (cf. interior) with rusticated quoins and bands, but was altered and extended 1861-2. Two bays. Left bay has mullioned and mullion-and-transom windows. Right bay has 2-storey canted bay window with mullions and hoodmould on ground floor. 1st floor has tall Gothic windows with cinquefoil heads, and blank, pointed-arched panel of Geometric tracery above. Roofs not visible. C18 section has tall stone conjoined corniced ridge stack. Octagonal corniced stacks elsewhere. Entrance front is entirely mid C19. Gothic doorway behind large crenellated porte-cochere. Irregular fenestration with similar Gothic detail to Victorian tower on garden front. Interior of medieval tower has walls 6 ft thick, vaulted ground floor and a stone newel stair which is actually in C18 section and evidence of medieval house adjoining tower. The section of Victorian appearance has C18 open-well stair. Drawing room in same part has Rococo plaster ceiling of 1740-50; carved mid C18 fireplace with broken semicircular lintel framing bust, and side terms; also 2 elaborate Palladian pedimented doorcases. Plinth, ground floor sill band, 1st floor sill band in centre bay only. Slightly-projecting centre had 6-panel door with flanking 4-pane lights and radial-glazed fanlight, all in 3-centred arch in panelled surround with hoodmould on moulded corbels. Plain ashlar panel above. 1st floor 12-pane sash and 2nd floor 6-pane sash, both in panelled surrounds. Moulded wood pediment. Flanking bays have quoins; tripartite-sashes, shortened on 2nd floor; those on upper floors C20 enlargements of old openings. End bays have tripartite ground-floor sashes with 12-pane and 6-pane sashes above. Hipped roof with 2 stepped-and-banded ridge stacks. Returns each show tripartite ground floor sash and 2 12-pane 1st floor sashes; left return also has half-glazed door with Gothick fanlight under round-arched head. Rear elevation shows 2 large 20-pane sash stair windows with Gothick glazing under 4-centred arched heads.
