Chancel c,1200-1210, north transept and tower mid C13 except for belfry stage of tower, C14. Repaired and adapted as parish church 1752 by Lord Crewe trustees, transept aisle rebuilt 1854, east end rebuilt 1881. Squared stone with dressings; stone slate roof. L-plan, with tower at end of north transept. Early English style. Tower in 4 stages: chamfered plinth, set-backs and string courses; clasping buttresses, north-western with newel stair (lit by chamfered loops) rising to belfry, north-eastern with gabled heads below 2nd stage. Boarded doors on west and east; western has pointed arch of 2 moulded orders with trefoil-headed recess to north, beneath roof weathering of pre-1752 village chapel; eastern has double-chamfered arch beneath steeply-pitched roof tabling of contemporary chantry chapel. Lancet on north in triple-chamfered surround; similar window, its head widened, above west door. Belfry stage has openings of 2 trefoiled ogee-headed lights with quatrefoil over, and plain parapet. To south of tower, 4-bay west wall with central buttress formed from stub of north wall of abbey nave. 2-light windows with Y-tracery, the southern C18 copies. 2-bay east aisle of transept has 2-light windows in C14 style and lancet to north (blocked pointed windows above aisle roof date from use of an upper floor as schoolroom, 1828-1851). Chancel has 2 lancets on north and south and a C19 triplet, with shafted jambs, on the east. Interior. Tall triple-chamfered tower arch; aisle arcade of pointed double- chamfered arches with broach stops and chamfered hood, corbels and round column; triple-chamfered transept arch on triple-shafted jambs, the broader central shaft with fillet. Shouldered doorway to tower stair. Chancel lancets, have lost jamb shafts; rear arches of east lancets form part of 5-bay wall arcade. Triple sedilia on south largely C19; further west quirked jambs of blocked sacristy door. Plain C12 or C13 font. 6 complete medieval grave slabs in transept floor, including 2 to abbots and 2, with appropriate emblems, to foresters. Small panels of C15 glass, 2 with figures of Premonstratensian canons, in chancel windows. C18 arched commandment, creed and pater boards: Old wall safe in transept aisle. Four 1-storey wings runs south; the two left ones form a U-shaped yard with the first building; the others run forward from the second building. Elevations to main yard: Single-storey west range shows 2 segmental arches at left end, doorway and small window. North range shows 2 segmental arches with blocked windows above, and returned gable to left (above roof of west range) with white brick arched panel containing pigeon openings. East range has 2 doorways. Elevations to small yards: Western yard shows inserted sliding doors in north range and 2 segmental arches in each side range. Central yard shows 2 segmental arches, with part-slatted windows above, in north range; and late C19 three-bay open cattle shed on east, with cast-iron columns on concrete bases. Eastern yard shows 2 segmental arches, with 6-pane casement and part- slatted window above, on north, and similar 3-bay cattle shed on west. East-facing cartshed/granary shows 6-bay segmental arcade, with 4 part-slatted windows above, and part-slatted granary window in south end. All windows have alternating-block surrounds and slightly-projecting sills. All roofs hipped, apart from dovecote gable. Rear facade is irregular and picturesque with 2-storey lean-to on left and 3 other lean-tos, all of varying heights with pantiled roofs. Interior: Staircase with stick balusters, turned newels and ramped handrail. Large 6-panelled doors in broad architraves. Two rooms have pronounced Ionic modillion cornices and dado rails. Said to be on site of, and partly incorporating masonry of house in which the Earl of Surrey stayed before the Battle of Flodden. Welsh slate roofs. C19 parts in heavy Norman style. South aisle has porch with boarded double doors in round arch, with 1818 sundial above, under coped gable with roll-moulded finial; 4 round-arched windows with hoodmoulds to east of porch, similar windows in each end of aisle. North aisle shows similar fenestration. Clerestorey with 4 pairs of round-arched lights on each side; coped east gable with elaborate cross fleury finial. West tower shows low stepped diagonal buttresses and slightly-projecting stair turret with small loops. West window of 2 trefoil-headed lights, with shields of Ogle and Widdrington under square head, is probably 1843 copy of C15 original; above window a built-in small effigy, perhaps of a priest. Set-back bell stage with large 2-light openings and heavy parapet with blind arcade and shafts at angles. To south of tower south-west quoin of Pre-Conquest nave is exposed, of large irregular blocks. Fenestration of chancel includes 2 round-headed loops and C15-style 4-light window on south, and lancet triplet on east, reproducing pre- 1843 features. C19 parts have sill strings and eaves cornice on block corbels; plaque with Greens' monogram beneath east and west windows. Interior: internal tower walls of long roughly-shaped blocks in irregular courses. Round arch of 2 square orders to tower, on restored chamfered imposts; square-headed doorway to tower stair on south, and blocked square-headed opening above. Tower stair of unusual square plan. Western bays of north arcade have round arches of a single square order with a chamfered hoodmould, on squat round piers with scallop capitals; taller eastern arch has filleted roll mouldings towards nave, on triple-shafted respond with still-leaf foliage and mask corbel. Western bays of south arcade have round arches of 2 square orders with a chamfered hoodmould, on round piers with re-cut capitals and bases with nail-head; tall double-chamfered eastern arch with broach stops and moulded hood. The western arch of each arcade cuts into a single-splayed Pre-Conquest window; the monolithic pseudo-arched head of that on the south has decoration of incised concentric circles. Double-chamfered chancel arch on twin-shafted corbel responds, the northern partly cut away. C19 nave and chancel roof with laminated round-arched trusses, on moulded stone corbels. Patterned mid-C19 glass in eastern lancets. 2 medieval bells now displayed in chancel. Well-preserved C13 effigy attributed to Agnes de Valence. C18 and early C19 mural monuments including 1739 Walton monument in south aisle and tablets by Davies. Font has early C19 cable-moulded bowl on older shaft and base. Collection of sculptured stones including Pre-Conquest cross fragments, headstone crosses and C12-C14 cross slabs; other unprovenanced carved stones from Society of Antiquaries'collection in Newcastle and inscribed cross slab from Kickhill Chapel Site, Hepple, are also displayed. Giant entablature with boldly-projecting cornice. Shallow-pitched hipped roof with corniced ridge stacks. Garden front 6 bays with angle pilasters and pilasters framing middle 4 bays. Similar windows and entablature. Interior. Central hall, based on the atrium of a Greco-Roman house, is surrounded by fluted Ionic columns on ground floor and Greek Doric columns above with palmette necking. Staircase up right side has elaborate brass balusters and between 1st floor columns brass railing with acanthus scrolls and ornate brass lampholders. Top lit by glazed coffered ceiling. The library also has a coffered ceiling and a deep plaster frieze with 2 bands of Greek Key and a band of palmettes. Fireplace, of yellow scagliola with white marble capitals, has Doric columns in antis. Dining room has marble fireplace with Doric columns. Similar frieze and coffered ceiling. Third quarter of C19. Rose arbour cast iron, wall snecked tooled stone with ashlar coping. Rose arbour 7 bays by 2 bays deep, the rear half formed by central embayment in the terrace wall; round columns with moulded caps and bases carrying segmental arches, that in centre wider; pierced spandrels, small quatrefoil above arch centre, and moulded cornice broken forward around pilasters above columns. To rear, arches rest directly on flat coping of wall. Wooden trellis infill remains in east end arch and at rear. Timbers remain of hipped roof, formerly glazed. Squared tooled stone with raised tooled dressings and clock stage; Welsh slate roof to lower part, timber cupola with lead spire. South elevation has vertical-panelled door in chamfered pointed arch, other elevations have lead-latticed casements in similar openings, all under gables with cruciform loops. Octagonal clock stage, with 4 clock faces, and cupola with shouldered arches carrying swept spire with weathervane. Interior; 2 transverse round arches carrying superstructure. Clock mechanism, giving day of week etc, in early cast-iron frame. Bell dated 1864 by John Warner and Son, London (not seen). The clock tower was the original pay office for the Cragside Estate. On far left additional half-bay, to ground floor only, with vertical-panelled door and overlight in keyed surround under cornice. 1st floor has sash windows with small-paned upper leaves, in eared architraves with swept feet, carved friezes and alternating segmental and triangular pediments; modillion cornice. Similar sashes above, those in end bays in keyed and shouldered architraves with shaped swept feet, swell frieze and dentil cornices; intermediate windows with keyed raised stone surrounds in half dormers with semicircular pediments. II Planned farm buildings. Circa 1858, and dovecot dated 1863 on lintel, for Sir Matthew White Ridley. Coursed squared sandstone with ashlar quoins and dressings; Welsh slate roofs with stone gable copings. Courtyard with granaries and central corn drier on north; hemmels at sides in front of storage sheds; enclosed by low south range with central square dovecot; 2 detached turnip houses in yard. One storey, higher on north range, with 3-storey south range tower. 5-bay north range, 3-bay wings; south range of 7 bays; turnip houses one- storey, one-bay. In north range a central pediment with blind roundel over sliding door and 2 square lights with glazing bars. Elliptical-headed arches on slightly- chamfered stone piers flanking central door and to inner returns of wings. In south range, dovecot has outside stone steps to central first floor boarded door; similar door at ground floor right; outer elevation has hit-and-miss windows on 2 floors and roundel with glazing bars on third; weathervane finial to pyramidal roof. Low ranges flanking dovecot have timber lintels to 3 boarded doors on elevation facing field. Interior of farm buildings shows scissor-trussed roofs.
