Nave with south porch, and chancel with vestry. 3-bay nave with C18 south porch; round-headed doorway with impost blocks and raised alternating voussoirs; above this a cartouche inscribed HD WINDSOR BUILDING & ENDOWING 1755 Two-light Decorated windows. 2-bay chancel has priest's door with double hollow- chamfered surround, and Decorated windows. 3-light east window. Gabled roof. Nave has kneelers carved with grotesque heads, possibly re-used C17 work. Fantastic west bellcote: the base has at each corner an obelisk capped by volutes; the tall bell stage has trefoiled heads to lights, obelisk finials at each corner, and central pyramid with ball finial. Interior of 1857. Attached to south wall of nave a gravestone to Anne Hermitage 1811, with shaped top,well carved with angel and scrolls. Inscribed: Time was with me, 'Tis now with thee:- The world with me is o'er So it will be ere long with thee:- When time shall be no more. Then while 'tis day O watch and pray Thy precious soul to save. Be timely wife:- There's no device Nor working in the grave. Similar but lower walls continue along the road for c. 40 yards in each direction and end in square corniced piers. Wall immediately to left of gateway is broken by the end wall of the later lodge. Single storey, 3 x 1 bays. Raised alternating quoins. Central stone porch, with pilasters, cornice and blocking course, flanked by canted bay windows with stone pent roofs. Twin gables with large obliquely-set modillions and moulded coping. Corniced ridge stack. They form a complex line through the wood and represent a boundary dispute vigorously pursued by Edward Swinburne till his death in 1786 and resolved by his son John Swinburne in 1788. To left a late C16 or early C17 doorway with Tudor-arched surround and multi-moulded floating cornice. Later C17 central doorway has Tudor-arched lintel, broad chamfered surround and hoodmould with small nailhead decoration. 12-pane sash windows in raised surrounds. (Vestiges of mullioned windows in quite different positions said to be visible beneath pebbledash). Steeply-pitched gabled roof with flat coping and kneelers; corniced ridge stack to right of earlier doorway. Similar external end stacks. The tower to rear is built daringly, directly over edge of cliff. It is said to be medieval but the walls are only c. 2 ft. thick and it appears to have no features earlier than C17. Vaulted basement with 2 storeys over. On the ground floor a 3-light mullioned window with multi-moulded cornice. On 1st floor a blocked mullioned-and-transomed cross window with similar cornice and a 12-pane sash in similar surround. Plain parapet with higher turret in north-east corner. Interior: Open-well early C18 staircase has turned balusters with square knops and clustered shafts at the newels. In the drawing room a large high-relief plaster roundel with a dragon in a circle of oak leaves; this is the crest of the Babingtons who owned the house from c.1660-1677; also large C17 fireplace with segmental lintel, into which an early C18 stone fireplace with pulvinated frieze has been set; flanking early C18 cupboards. 1st floor room in tower has a fine early C18 corner cupboard with arched panels, scrolled pedimented top and shaped shelves. Inner return has Tudor-arched doorway, now a window; left half of lintel with relief carving of shield and panel, the right half uncarved. Hollow-chamfered base to battlemented parapet with stone water spouts. Steeply-pitched gabled roof with end stacks. Attached house of 4 irregular bays has C18 12-pane sashes beneath early C17 string courses which rise above each window. Roof hipped on right. Enormous ridge stack between 3rd and 4th bays. Roof marks on stack reveal that the building was formerly 3 storeys (cf. interior). North (entrance) side has C19 Tudor-style doorway into tower. Similar windows, several in double-chamfered surrounds. In tower one enlarged C16 window with chamfered surround and 3 blocked similar windows. North-east corner of tower has a small single-storey projection of older masonry with a double plinth. Interior: tower has tunnel-vaulted ground floor; one jamb of a recently discovered (1985) large C16 or C17 fireplace on 1st floor; and a possibly re- set earlier medieval fireplace, with chamfered jambs and corbels supporting flat lintel, on the 2nd floor. Massive C16 roof timbers. In the roof space of the adjoining wing a C16 or early C17 fireplace, also vestiges of plasterwork proving existence of former second floor. In the dining room a wood Rococo fire surround and contemporary Delft tiles. H. Honeyman considered the tower to be of 1305 but more recent information from Mrs. L.
