Medieval tower, altered and house added mid C17 for Mark Errington. Restored early C20. Tower large random rubble with stone slate roof. Attached house roughly-dressed stone and Welsh slate roof. Old brick chimneys. Tower, on left, has large projecting chimney to left with stone base rising to 2 tall brick shafts. To right a projecting 3-storey gabled frontispiece, blank on ground floor and oversailing above on 2 large rounded corbels. Two 2-light double-chamfered mullioned windows above, with strings rising to form hoodmoulds. Gabled roof with kneelers Between these projections a C20 door and, on 1st floor a 2-light window with hoodmould and panel above inscribed M:E: for Mark Errington. 3-bay attached house to right has central gabled porch with round-headed door in architrave. Stone slate roof. M.E. inscribed on lintel of original Tudor- arched doorway within. Flanking canted bay windows and 2-light windows above have double-chamfered surrounds. This detail is now all C19. On left return 4-light mullioned windows with hoodmoulds on ground and first floors. 2-light window above. Block 9-10: 2 storeys, 6 bays. Doorway to No. 9 has cornice over; No. 10 has semicircular hood. No. 9 has a canted bay window; No, 10 a bay window. 2- and 3-light windows in moulded wood surrounds. Cross gables over 1st and 3rd bays; bay 4 has gabled half-dormer; bays 5 and 6 under one large cross gable. Hipped roof with 3 brick-corniced stacks. Block 11-12: 9 bays. Doorways with semicircular hoods on brackets; No. 11 has a large bay window over; No. 12 has a round-headed window. Centre 2 bays have tripartite windows in moulded wood surrounds; semicircular pediments over 1st floor windows. To left, 3 bays with 12-pane sashes and 1st floor dentilled string. To right canted bay window. Over centre bays 2 Flemish gables. Roof hipped on left with octagonal lateral shaft; gabled on right with end stack. Rear span has C18 masonry, but detail of 1907 in Arts and Crafts style. Large 2-storey wood bow window and projecting wing on left with 3 attached Tuscan columns supporting jettied first floor. Hipped roof with 2 tall stacks with modillion cornices. 5-bay returns with similar detail. Doorway on right return at junction with rear wing,in Greek-style porch of c.1820. Wing on east side has 12-pane sashes; wing on west side a Venetian window with Diocletian window over. To rear a large Venetian stair window. Interior: Staircase hall has screen of 2 Ionic columns in antis on ground floor, Corinthian columns on 1st floor; imperial stair with iron stick balusters; Adam- style Venetian window. Garden room (behind the bay window) is octagonal with frieze of triglyphs and metopes with achievements of arms; guttae panels in the cornice; grey marble fireplace with Ionic columns and a relief head in the frieze. Dining room has white marble fireplace with palmette frieze and detached terms, each with a lion emerging from acanthus leaves which in turn grow from a large, lion's foot; palmette frieze. Library has white marble fireplace, the frieze carved with cornucopia and Pheobus in his chariot, flower vases on the jambs. Long narrow windows in thin roll-moulded wood surrounds with projecting sills and wedge lintels. Ground floor has renewed 2-pane sashes, 12-pane sashes above. 1st floor string. Steeply-pitched roof with Flemish gables and 5 segment-headed dormers with 12-pane casements. End stacks. East wing, recessed on right return, is contiguous with rear span and is in different and later brick. 3 windows. On ground floor small irregular later windows. Stone 1st floor sill band and 12-pane sashes in similar surrounds to main block, possibly re-used from rear. Gabled roof with early C19 Flemish gable on right. 3 dormers. Rear facade is irregular. In the centre the original narrow stair projection with tall round-headed window, band and Flemish gable. Round this the rear span was built in several stages. It has 12-pane sashes to right and 16-pane sashes to left. Early C20 brick porch with shaped gable. Lower service wing to left is also of several builds. 3 C19 Flemish gables. Interior: late C19 imitation C17 staircase. An Art Nouveau fireplace with 7 painted gesso figures representing the arts and abstract virtues. Higher main block to right has 12-pane sashes on both floors. Similar detail. West front, i.e. above roof of linking range is pedimented. Stable block to left also has similar detail. Shallow-pitched hipped roofs. Tall entrance tower on west side over round-headed pedimented carriage arch; slightly-recessed upper stage has angle pilasters, cornice, blocking course and lead dome. Interior: Hall has 2 fireplaces - one, wood of c.1750, Rococo style; the other white marble of c.1800. Originally built 1714 by Vanbrugh for the Earl of Carlisle. Rebuilt with facsimile facade by R.J. Johnson after a fire in 1869. Ashlar facade, brick to rear. Lakeland slate roof. Baroque style. 2-storey, 3-bay centre flanked by 3-storey, 1-bay towers. Entirely rusticated, the rustication breaking around openings to form voussoirs. Arcaded ground floor with round arches filled with elaborate wrought-iron grilles and gates. On 1st floor large 24-pane sashes in moulded segment-headed windows with keystones. Centre section is pedimented. Towers each have massive upper storey with open round arches and pediments on each side. Hipped roof with corniced ridge stacks. Ashlar with Welsh slate roof. Romanesque style. A large and impressive church. Cruciform with nave and chancel aisles and crossing tower. West end has portal with 2 orders of columns, 2 round-headed windows above and intersecting arches on second floor; flanking bays rise to form octagonal towers with short stone spires. 5-bay nave. North porch with 2 orders of columns and chevron mouldings. Shafted windows with cushion capitals and roll-moulded arches. Clerestory windows have beakhead in the arches. Round-arched corbel table to aisle; nave has corbel table with chevron moulding. Large central tower with 2-light bell openings under high round arch and with flanking blank arches. Above this the wall is carved in imitation of tilework. Round stair projection in north-west corner rises above parapet as a turret. Apsidal chancel has arcade of round arches beneath eaves and billet frieze above. Interior: Nave arcade has quatrefoil piers; chancel piers are round. Glass by Wailes.
