C16, altered mid C18. Ashlar. Single, high, wide elegant arch, forming hump-back bridge is flanked by pilaster strips each bearing a niche with a round inset panel above. North end of bridge has square projections with blocked round- headed arches; and round end piers with big conical finials. Flat coping stones on parapet. The approach walls have a drip stone at the base of the parapet supported on small corbels. Upper windows gabled dormers breaking eaves. They, and gables to projecting wings have overlapping coping stones and kneelers. Similar gables to porches projecting into courtyard from ends of wings. Windows chamfered and slightly recessed. Chamfered mullions in gable-end windows. Sash windows, most of them original. Single-storey addition to right, 3 bays with 2-bay outshut containing chamfered doorway and small window. Slender, square, tall chimney stack. Main block has big coupled, stone, corniced stacks; 3 on ridge and one projecting on each return. C14 with C17, C18 and C19 alterations. John Patterson and Sir Jeffrey Wyatville did work in early C19. Mostly dressed stone. Quadrilateral with 4 corner towers and linking ranges. Central courtyard. Late C19 service wing to left. Entrance front has 3-bay centre which is of basement and 3 storeys, flanked by higher towers with still higher turrets. Steps to projecting early Cl7 centre piece with paired Tuscan columns on all 3 floors, framing, on ground floor, round- headed doorway with moulded imposts, arch; and responds, and on 1st and 2nd floors, 2 renewed cross windows with another Tuscan column between them. Renewed cross windows left and right of centrepiece on 2 upper floors. Slit windows on ground floor. Frieze and cornice above each floor, blank arches on first two friezes, lozenges above 2nd floor. Achievement of arms above top window;and 4 beasts with shields stand in frontof embattled parapet. Sashes under hoodmould in towers. In courtyard, early C17 two-storey addition; possibly rebuilt open arcade on ground floor of segmental arches on square piers with small attached Ionic columns. 6 statues of Worthies on corbels above the piers: Staircase to 1st floor. Balcony on 2nd floor. Interior: Tunnel-vaulted basements to towers and ranges. Newel stairs in towers. Early C17 ceiling with pendants, two elaborate C17 overmantel and a fine early C18 white marble fireplace with satyr heads. Interior in poor repair. Flat arches with voussoirs to windows and door in central block. 12-pane sashes on 1st floor, 16-pane on ground floor. Right wing has early C19 gabled porch with a square peak to gable and a 16-pane sash window. One-bay left wing has 16-pane sash on ground floor, C20, 12-pane sash above. Gabled roof with flat coping stones and stone corniced gable-end stacks. Wings have hipped roofs. Interior: plain early C19 staircase, 6-panelled doors and plain late C18 fireplaces. In one room early C17 panelling with fluted pilasters, brought from Chillingham Castle, and an overmantel made from a C16 panel with 3 King's heads in roundels, also from Chillingham Castle. Tudor style. Irregular plan, almost lozenge-shaped. 4-bay entrance has doorway in 2nd bay framed by offset buttresses which rise to parapet. 2-light Tudor-arched windows under hood moulds, those on ground floor taller, have delicate traceried glazing bars. Tudor-arched door with plain mullioned fanlight under hoodmould with blank shield above. Top parapet with ridged coping. Canted left corner of one bay only, also framed by buttresses and with similar windows. Here the parapet is higher and has a blank shield under a hoodmould. Left return similar. Rear has much older masonry and the early Cl9 windows have been fitted in under older relieving arches. Attached 3-storey earlier block to right. 2 gabled dormers breaking eaves. Gabled projecting left bay has stone-roofed canted bay window on ground floor, 2-light window under hoodmould above. Casement windows with double-chamfered surrounds. Blank right bay with front lean-to. Gabled coping, kneelers and finials to roof. Offcentre transverse stack with 2 diagonal shafts. Small gabled porch on left return. Wide curved wall, stepped up on right to lodge. Lower left section with 2 end and two central square piers with roll moulded ogee caps and similar finials. Central piers have cast iron gates with obelisk finials and flanking, 2-stage square towers on plinths of wall height. Walls stand to c 9 feet on north side, 5 feet on south side, but the east and west ends stand to gable height. Remains of plain, square responds to former chancel arch. Responds of former arch into south chapel have C13 mouldings. Small square recesses in chancel are possibly aumbry and piscina. 2 elaborate medieval tomb slabs in south chapel and one in nave. Nave has massive C12 masonry, the upper part of west wall rebuilt in C19 using old stone. 2 narrow round-headed windows and sexfoil rose window over are Victorian. South doorway in porch has one order of columns with block capitals, all much renewed. 2 C19 round-headed windows in nave south wall. North wall has one small C12 window. Similar, smaller window in chancel north wall. Larger round-headed window in south wall may be partly original (rere-arch) but enlarged later. Apsidal east end, roughly squared externally in C14 when 2-light window with cusped heads was inserted in south wall. 2 offset buttresses support apse. Upper courses of apse and north side rebuilt in C19. Narrow priest's door. Victorian Romanesque double bellcote over east gable of nave. Interior: chancel arch has semi-circular responds with different capitals: north side has cable-moulded echinus, 2 beast heads and leaf fonts, South side is halfway between block and scalloped shape. Abaci on both sides have saltire crosses. Arch has roll mould, hollow chamfer and outer billet moulding. Apse arch has plain responds with saltire crosses an blocks and billet moulding. Sandstone ashlar, later render to the front, with brick axial stacks, and slate valley roof. Vernacular Baroque style. PLAN: double-depth plan with officers' section to N end, forn1ing E side of parade ground quadrangle. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys and attic; 16:4-window range. A near symmetrical range, with left-hand end section set forward, blocked quoins to stepped gables, the single bay to the right of the end range defined by a blocked pilaster strip, entrance bays to the centre and 3 from each end of the main range: broken forward, with a thin cornice and parapet. Segmental-arched doorways with imposts and tall keys, small-paned fanlights and double boarded doors; ashlar Surrounds to ground- and second-floor flat-arched 8/8-pane sashes, and first-floor round-arched sashes with key and imposts; the 5 accentuated right-hand bays have segmental-arched first-floor windows, as do those to the matching rear elevation. Left-hand gable onto the Parade has 3 segmental-arched ground-floor windows and 1 smaller right-hand one, single first-floor round-arched and second-floor segmental-arched windows, with 8/8-pane sashes, t11e 2 right-hand ground-floor windows have C20 horned sashes; 2 boarded oculi in the stepped gables. INTERIOR: axial fireplaces in heated back-to-back barrack rooms, divided by a spine wall, with stair flights from the entrances with uncut strings and 2 rails. Former officers' section has stair with column balusters and square newels and moulded rail, first-floor axial corridor and fireplaces with fluted surrounds. HISTORY: part of the earliest plarn1ed barrack complex in England, pre-dating most English barracks by nearly 80 years, because of the need for a permanent garrison on the Scottish border. This plan is typical of barracks in the C17 and early C18. One of a number of Ordnance buildings associated with Hawksmoor and Vanbrugh. , 2013-08-19 1971-05-26
