On 1st floor, similar but taller windows with diamond-paned casements. Similar detail to 1-bay wing on right. Stone cornice-gutter. Gabled roof with ridged coping and kneelers. In valley between front and rear span 4 tall corniced, diagonally-set chimneys. On left return, outside stone steps to similar door leading to court room on 1st floor. Tower 4 storeys, the top 2 storeys added 1835. Original doorway with pointed arch on south side, round window above. 3-light Decorated west window. Clock and 2-light Tudor-style bell openings added 1835. Parapet with Tudor-arched balustrade and small corner turrets. Small spire. Turrets and spire have weather vanes. Attached vestry has inscription of 1835 over 2-light window. CA 3-bay nave has sundial inscribed V 1765, on south-west corner. Chamfered plinth, 2-light Geometric windows. Decorative lead glazing patterns. Moulded cornice. 2- bay chancel with attached vestries in Perpendicular style. Large 5-light east window. In terior: tower staircase has stick balusters, turned newe l and ramped handrail. Inscription in tower hall recording erection of clock 1836 for #189.11.10. We take no note of time but from its loss. To give it then a tongue is wise in man. Wide aiseless nave with flat ceiling. Chancel arch of 1912. Wall monuments in nave: Francis Haigh,1824 by Jobling of Gateshead, Rev. William Haigh, 1836 and daughter Frances, 1837, whose zeal in the religious instruction and useful employment of the Female youth in this parish ably seconded the efforts of her father. Right return has later C19 canted bay window. To rear, the back stair window has pointed arch and intersecting glazing bars. C16, C17, C18 and 1820-25. Random rubble including massive porphyry blocks, partly roughcast. Ashlar dressings and Scottish slate roofs. Towerhouse, built after 1584, with irregular later additions. Towerhouse: 4 storeys. 47 ft. x 29 ft. C19 12-pane sashes in moulded surrounds. Projecting parapet on original rounded corbels. C19 battlements. Gabled roof behind parapet with original stone-flagged walkway around. Slightly later extension to tower on left, forming T-plan for these early parts. Similar windows. Continuous moulded corbel table below parapet. Pyramidal roof and circular stair turret. 2-storey, 3-bay house of c.1820-25 attached to left. Central battlemented porch tower with Tudor-arched entrance and oriel window above on moulded corbels. Plaster rib vault in porch. 2-storey canted bay window to right and 3-light mullioned windows to left. Battlemented parapet and false gable behind porch. Left return has work of 1820-25 on right and 3-bay C18 house to left with 12-pane sash windows in raised surrounds. Rear facade irregular. Interior: Tower has vaulted basement, subdivided later into 2 rooms. Original narrow stone newel stair starts from 1st floor in corbelled-out semicircular projection now partly inside later addition to tower, which also contains a broader and later stone newel stair from ground to 1st floor. Base of this stair has round-arched doorway with roll-moulded surround, probably early C17. Similar doorway into kitchen range to rear. Base of original tower has late C17 or early C18 doorway with bolection-moulded surround. On 1st floor of tower a large fireplace dated GW 1619 MW for George and Mary Wallis. The initials set in decorative recessed panels. Tudor-arched lintel. C19 section has contemporary decoration including fine doors, cornices with Greek key pattern, cantilevered stair with wrought-iron balustrade. Several early C19 fireplaces and one late C18 wood fireplace with Corinthian columns and relief carving in lintel, brought from elsewhere. Hist. of Northumberland Vol. VII. A.A. To rear of this section is the engine shed with very tall round tapering corniced brick engine-house chimney. Left section is snecked rubble on ground floor, brick above. Shelter sheds on ground floor have 2 Tudor-arched openings. 2-light double chamfered windows over. Hollow-chamfered cornice and hipped roof. Only base of chimneysremain. 13-bay, single-storey brick wing of 1870 to left has two 6-panelled doors and eleven 12-pane sashes in raised surrounds. North facade has, in centre, a 4-storey, round Gothick tower with closely studded pointed-arched door on ground floor; pointed-arched windows, 2 of them blind and painted in imitation of glazing bars, on 1st and 2nd floors; quatrefoils on 3rd floor; moulded corbels and battlements. Windows on returns and to rear have hoodmoulds which continue as dripstone. Hoodmoulds and diamond panes also to windows in gables. Big, stone ridge stack with 2 tall, diagonally-set corniced chimneys. Left of lodge, plain walling ending in 2 square piers with concave caps. Gateway to right of lodge: square corniced piers with heavy, concave tops and lead eagles. Flanking arcades of 5 pointed arches with wrought iron grilles between, all on chamfered base and capped by roll-moulded coping. Centre block has rusticated quoins, renewed 12-pane sashes in architraves and a mid-C19 porch with pedimented doorway, rusticated quoins and cornice. Wings 5 bays, 1:3:1. Projecting 3-bay centres with rusticated quoins. 1? storeys. Windows in architraves. Right and left, on ground floor blank, elliptical arches rising from imposts. A window or door in each arch. The ends of the wings have pedimented gables. Later 3-bay extension, formerly a coach house, on left. Garden front similar in style with pedimented wings and architraves to all windows. Doorway with pediment, Tuscan columns and triglyph frieze. Corniced stone chimney stacks. Inside much changed but mainly with re-used material. Many original doors and window reveals, and one good late C18 wood fireplace with Adam-style columns and a frieze of rustic scenes and sea shells presumably designed for Admiral Roddam. In former kitchen, now the garage, a dog's treadmill for turning the spit. Wooden with many little turned balusters. Rainwater heads, one dated 1783.
