Coped gables; small stepped- and-banded left end stack. Wheel-house to right has tall opening with corbelled lintel. Left return shows lst-f1oor 24-pane Yorkshire sash. Rear elevation shows stable door under boarded double pitching door, both in chamfered surrounds, to right of kiln; two 2nd-floor windows lost carpentry. Interior: undershot iron-and-timber waterwheel, probably once external (c.f. Brinkburn Mill and Thrum Mill, Rothbury). Stones, gearing and some machinery in situ. Squared stone with roughly- tooled dressings (except for top floor, brick in Dutch bond). Welsh slate roof. 3 storeys, 14 windows. Each floor slightly recessed. Ground floor shows C20 openings; upper floors have 2-pane casements with slightly-projecting sills, those on top floor under segmental arches. Coped gables. The two left bays are a 1985 extension in facsimile. Similar fenestration to rear. Initially built as a foundry for tin and iron, and converted to a woollen mill by John Reed in 1791, remaining in use as such until 1884; the derelict building was taken over by Ellwood Holmes of Newcastle in 1915 to make Hydrate of Alumina, a white pigment previously obtained from Germany. A Gilks water turbine in the millrace provided hydroelectric power, the mill being one of the first business premises thus lit in the country. Domestic Revival style. Front elevation; stepped up slope; 2 storeys except for end houses 2 storeys + attic; each house 2 bays. Each has central porch, timber-framed on stone base, with 9-pane fixed casement and vertical-panelled door, on left return, in ogee-arched surround under gablet with projecting bargeboards. 2-, 3- and 4-light mullioned-and-transomed windows holding plain casements; lst-floor windows in intermediate houses in gabled half dormers: end houses have broad timber-framed attic gables, the upper parts set forward on moulded corbels, each with a 3-light small-paned casement window; plain bargeboards. Coped intermediate gables, end and ridge stacks with battered faces. Returns each show broad gable with attic slit and pent projection below; intermediate houses have projecting gabled wings, both with attached outhouses showing asymmetric-pitched roofs. East end house has broad gable above late C20 rear wing in same style. External stone stairs to balconies and upper flat doors in wings. Attached yard walls with re-set arched coping. Attached 15-metre-long wall on far left has chamfered set back at mid-height and gabled coping. Left return has 2 steps up to central boarded door. Rear elevation shows central projecting wing flanked by blocked windows, and 2 part-slatted windows to 2nd floor. Wing has arched opening under part-slatted window in end wall, chamfered eaves cornices and hipped roof; external stone stair to boarded door on right return. Flanking bays have triple casement windows, and attic casements in widened openings; to right of left ground floor window is small carved panel with Armstrong trebuchet. Set back early C20 north wing, timber framed on stone base. South elevation: Main part 3 bays. Projecting centre has triple casement below and plate-glass sash under shouldered arch in gable above; on right is extruded canted former porch, with blocked pointed arch holding later casement, and blind slits on returns. Side bays have gabled roof dormers; double casement on ground floor right; flat-roofed timber-framed extension to left. Far left timber-framed extension with metal-framed casements and hipped roof. Larder or Cheese Room has slate table and De Morgan majolica tiles. House may have been designed by the unknown architect of the 1864 Cragside. Roof hipped to left; coped right gable with stepped-and-corniced end stack. Right return shows renewed 30-pane sash stair window in rear wing. Left return in 3 sections; centre and right parts have similar fenestration to front. Right bay is end of front block, with coped gable on left carrying stepped-and-corniced stack. Lower 2-bay centre has central panelled double doors under C20 rustic porch, and coped left gable with stepped-and-corniced end stack. To left a single-storey 5-bay outbuilding with boarded double doors under massive lintel and square window openings, boarded except for far left, which is blocked. To left is end pier with moulded flat top, and attached lower wall with pitched coping, ending in pilaster. To right is end of lodge; pedimented gable, pilasters, 12-pane sash window in keyed architrave. Left return of lodge, to drive, 1 storey, 2 bays: tall plinth, end pilasters, eaves cornice. Central porch with renewed door under keyed archivolt with impost band. 12-pane sashes in keyed architraves. Coped gables; central stepped-and-corniced stack with tripartite shaft.
