Main block 3 storeys, 2 + 1 + 2 bays. Plinth, 1st floor band and 2nd floor sill band. Central doorway and window to right now within porch; 2nd-floor windows in centre and end bays only; all windows 4-pane sashes; all openings in raised surrounds. Raised tumbled-in gable copings; rebuilt banded end stacks. Bands, with an additional one at eaves level, continued across right return. Projecting wing on left shows similar fenestration; three-window two-storey end bow with castellated parapet and hipped roof behind. Renewed doorway on right return; 9-pane sash stair window with intersecting head under round arch on left return. Interior altered. Right-of-centre renewed door in heavy alternate-block surround ; early C20 4-pane casements except for 6-pane on ground floor right. Raised reverse-step coping to left gable; end stacks, that to left rendered. Rear elevation shows projecting wing with gable stack, and 12-pane sash, with 8-pane Yorkshire sash above, on right return. Main block c.1730 incorporating C17 or earlier fabric; extended to east in early C19. Squared stone except for earlier rubble fabric in west wall; cut dressings; Welsh slate roof. Double-span main block with extension to east of front part. South elevation in two sections. Left part 2 storeys + attics, 2 + 1 + 2 bays. Four steps, flanked by low walls carrying terracotta urns, up to central C19 half-glazed door, with patterned glass, in bolection-moulded surround, the moulding arched over a lintel panel with coat of arms; flanking moulded brackets but no cornice. Sash windows in moulded surrounds. Ground- floor openings have segmental floating pediments above. Coped gables on moulded kneelers. Two flat-topped roof dormers with paired 8-pane casements. Stepped-and-corniced end stacks, that to left rendered. 3-bay right part shows sashes, coped gable on moulded kneelers and stepped-and-corniced right end stack. Twin-gabled left return shows masonry of several different periods: right projecting stepped chimney breast and outline of gable end of earlier house; left 2 small chamfered windows and one with timber lintel. Rear elevation shows several windows, with C19 fancy leaded glazing, and 2 round-arched stair windows. Interior: Dining Room and Morning Room have enriched cornices; rear passage has 2 panelled archways with imposts and keyblocks. Dog-leg open-string stair with turned vase-on-urn balusters, similar newels, ramped and moulded grip handrail and curtail step. Front block has 2-panel bedroom doors in corniced surrounds, and 7-bay roof with pegged collar-beam trusses showing carpenters numbers I, II, (III), 4, V and VI. Note: the front elevation of the main block is almost identical to that of Elyhaugh (q,v.), also in Felton parish, which is dated 1732. , 1969-12-31 1969-12-31

Attributed to William Newton, for Robert Lisle, incorporating early C18 house at rear. Rear wing now a separate dwelling. Early C18 part largely demolished c.1920. Main part tooled ashlar; rear wing squared tooled stone except for south part of west wall which is brick in English Garden Wall Bond 1 and 4. Graduated Lakeland slate roof with stacks rebuilt in brick on old bases. South front 2 storeys, 2 + 3 + 2 bays. Plinth; 1st floor and sill bands. 5 broad steps with moulded nosing in front of centrepiece with panelled giant Ionic pilasters, fluted frieze and modillioned pediment. Central old half- glazed door with side-lights, fluted capitals, frieze and archivolt, all enclosed under round arch. 12-pane sash windows. Side parts have similar fenestration, and moulded eaves cornice. Hipped roof with 2 ridge stacks. Similar 4-bay returns. On right of right return is lower 2-bay rear wing; left bay shows keyed Venetian window and two 12-pane sashes; parapet with pediment-shaped centre. Slightly-projecting right bay with renewed 12-pane sashes is part of early C18 house. Rear elevation shows Venetian stair window with radial-headed 20-pane sash; wing to left shows two 4-pane sashes under 4-centred arches and Venetian window on brick part of inner return. Stone end bay is early C20 rebuild, with sash windows in re-set early C18 architraves. Largely contemporary interior. Entrance Hall has fireplace with radial hearth, and fluted frieze. Drawing Room has C20 replacement marble fireplace; chair rail; carved architraves and doorheads; palette frieze. Morning Room shows similar decoration: carved wood fireplace with sphinxes, and fluted frieze with egg-and-dart cornice. Dining Room has C20 replacement marble fireplace, flat plaster panelling above dado rail, and frieze and overdoors with fluting and paterae. Present kitchen has fluted frieze. Cellars with brick barrel vaults and wine bins. Roman Doric screen at foot of Imperial stair with iron stick balusters and ramped handrail; Ionic stairhead screen. Bedrooms have carved wood fireplaces, chair rails and cornices. Attached outbuildings to rear are early C18 but much altered in early C20, and are not of special interest. , 1969-12-31 1969-12-31

Flanking bays have boarded doors between 16-pane centre-hinged casements; similar single windows in end bays. All windows with slightly-projecting sills. All openings in alternating-block surrounds. Brick in irregular largely stretcher bond; cut stone coping and dressings. Wall with flat coping, c.3.5 metres high, joins north- east corner of front block of house and runs north then returns east alongside road; boarded door close to corner in each part, that in roadside wall with segmental rear arch and brick inscribed 'FB 1774' above. Various heating ducts at rear of this section; beyond boarded double gates is an external projection with furnace. Section beyond greenhouse (q.v.) has 2 old doors made up of broad boards with moulded edges, in alternating-block surrounds, and external pilaster buttresses. After short step northwards, the coping is ramped down twice. Overall length c.250 metres, as far as straight-joint with later wall, which is not of interest. Probably built for the Riddell family's well-known racehorses, such as Doctor Syntax, pastured here in the early C19. On west end of each parapet is an openwork box-section wrought-iron pier, with palmette panels and central moulded urn finial, each flanked by 4 smaller urns; attached to each a short length of railing extends east along the parapet, with spearhead bars and a top rail ramped down and Hiding in a scroll. Building history 'a happy puzzle for the antiquarian' (Pevsner). Approximate sequence: Nave-and-chancel church of c.1200 with small west tower or belfry, and perhaps transepts; south porch then south-west chapel added in later C13; aisles early C14 (chantry endowed 1331) incorporating earlier porch and chapel; present porch c.1400, later truncated; nave roof reduced in pitch and belfry rebuilt C16 or C17; north aisle extended c.1845; vestry 1870; east end rebuilt 1884; north aisle extension partly rebuilt c.1900. Squared stone of varying colour and quality; cut dressings. Low- pitched felted roof to nave; graduated Lakeland slates on chancel; stone roof to porch. Aisled nave with south porch; chancel with small north vestry. West end shows central projecting turret with small loops, carrying belfry with twin square-headed openings to east and west and single openings to north and south; pyramidal stone cap. Flanking tall 2-light windows of 1870 and heavy stepped west-facing angle buttresses of former aisle less nave; at right-angles to these the other parts of the buttresses may be seen in the masonry of the added aisles. Blocked window in north aisle; small chamfered lancet in south aisle; diagonal stepped south-west buttress. Gabled projecting south porch with hollow-chamfered arch under a moulded hood, probably re-set, between irregular buttresses formed from cut-down side walls. Block sundial dated 17.. above. Shallow but taller gabled projection behind is south end of older porch, with lower courses of diagonal buttresses surviving. Interior with stone benches, vault on chamfered ribs and late C19 double doors in arch of two continuous chamfers. To west a C19 two-light window with the head of older lancet above and flower-carved stone to right. To east chamfered plinth, stepped buttress, three C19 windows and diagonal stepped buttress. Five-light window, with Geometrical-traceried head cut from a single slab, in east end of aisle. North side of nave: Older west part shows 2 stepped buttresses and two C19 windows; middle part c.1900 with three 2-light windows; projecting gabled east part of c.1845 with two 2-light windows, tracery renewed. Chancel south wall shows late C19 double-chamfered priest's door under tablet R R 'ALEX DAVISON ESQ /impropriator/repaired this chancel 1823', and 3 restored lancets. Massive irregular clasping buttress at south-east corner. East end with 3 stepped lancets and tablet 'EMERSON MUSCHAMP BAINBRIDGE/OF FELTON HALL/ 1884'; coped gable with finial cross. Interior: Five-bay north arcade of double-chamfered arches with chamfered hoodmoulds on octagonal columns with moulded capitals; earlier semicircular east respond. South arcade is made up of double-chamfered west arch on semicircular responds (perhaps re-set), a length of c.1200 nave wall with the original south doorway, chamfered arch on shafted jambs (inner order cut away) with tall round-headed rear arch, and 2 broad eastern arches similar in detail to north arcade. To east of original doorway a small carved recess probably for stoup; above and to east are traces of blocked windows. Rear arch of the present south door is end of vault of older porch, with one chamfered rib. Renewed doorway in west end to turret newel stair, now ending in shouldered doorway on to nave roof. Double-chamfered chancel arch, with chamfered hood, on semicircular responds with moulded capitals and holdwater bases. Low- pitched nave roof has purlins resting on tie-beams with central block carrying ridge; chancel has late C19 crown-post roof with scissor braces. Monuments: In north aisle broken C14 priest's slab with high-relief figure and Lombardic marginal inscription. Wall tablets in chancel; James Muncaster d.1797 with urn and arms, signed by Fisher of York; Robert Lisle of Acton House d.1800 with draped urn and arms, signed by T. King of Bath; Alexander Davison of Swarland Park d.1829 with carved canopied niche. In south aisle tablet to William Adams of South Acton c.1824. Octagonal font, probably C14 but re-tooled. Historical note: This length of wall probably formed the back of the 'long glass house' built by John Widdrington so that 'his delicate south-country wife might take exercise without exposure to the east wind' (Northumberland County History V p.308). Internal face shows attached gateway towards north end; the gatepiers have C15 or early C16 mouldings and later swept dips (ball finials missing) and may be an in-situ remnant of a priory gatehouse. Steeply-pitched roof. Gables have raised reverse-stepped coping on moulded kneelers. End stacks with chamfered caps. C19 right bay shows renewed 12-pane sash with 2-pane casement over; coped right gable with end stack rebuilt on old base. Left return shows blocked lst-floor door and gable window. Horizontally- tooled stone except for west end, tooled-and-margined stone with ashlar dressings; Welsh slate roof. Aisleless rectangular plan, with presbytery (q.v.) adjoining east end. 1842 west end has boarded double doors in large moulded arch beneath 2 carved niches with corbelled sills holding figures of saints. Expanded-arm cross in gable and gabled bellcote with twin pointed arches and Greek cross finial. Stepped diagonal buttresses carrying small pinnacles. Built into wall on right of door is copy of C18 inscribed stone, the original being set in the adjacent graveyard wall (q.v.). South wall 5 bays; sill band, 2-light Y-tracery windows with hoodmoulds. 2 similar windows on north, the eastern blocked. Interior: Plastered. Internal 3-sided apse beyond pendant screen of 3 pointed arches with crocketed pinnacle in spandrels: panelled rear wall with similar arches on paired rounded pilasters. Moulded stone font. Horizontally-tooled stone with ashlar door surround and band; Scottish slate roof except for Welsh slates on north wing. East elevation 2 storeys, 3 bays, symmetrical. Plinth, 1st floor band. 3 steps up to central C20 glazed door under radial fanlight in surround with archivolt, moulded imposts, half-round pilasters and-moulded cornice. Plain sash windows with slightly-projecting sills. Hipped roof with 2 stepped- and-banded ridge stacks. Lower 1-bay north wing, set back to right, shows similar ground-floor window and stepped-and-corniced right end stack. 2-bay left return of main block shows similar detail to east elevation; rear elevation shows stair projection with 16-pane sash windows to left. Projecting right bay is end of cross-wing, showing 4-light mullioned window holding 12-pane sashes with paired 6-pane casements above, and slit below rebuilt stack on gable; end of outshut to left shows renewed door in chamfered surround under shield-shaped datestone with Percy crescent. 3-bay right return; gabled centre bay shows blocked pointed doorway and 2-light window in gable, beneath gabled bellcote with pointed arch. Snecked stone with tooled ashlar dressings; graduated Lakeland slate roof. One storey, 5 narrow bays: 2 segmental arches holding boarded double doors, a stable door in chamfered surround, a 6-pane casement and a stable door in an inserted opening. Coped gables on moulded kneelers; small ridge stack with chamfered cap. Left return shows buttress and slatted gable opening; right return shows boarded pitching door in chamfered surround. Rear elevation to street shows pair of blocked slit vents near left end. South yard wall joins south-west corner of outbuilding with north-west corner of Old Vicarage (q.v.), and holds central gateway flanked by low buttresses. North wall joins north-east corner of outbuilding and runs east, stepping in to enclose former midden, to gateway with buttress on left; coping steps up to taller return linking to east end of Old Vicarage kitchen wing.
