Ground floor C20 casements with plate-glass sashes above, all in moulded stone surrounds with slightly-projecting sills. Central pedimented dormer of c.1900 with paired sashes, flanked by flat-topped roof dormers with similar glazing. Stepped-and- banded end stacks. Returns show stepped gables, with raised pedimented centre above band, and small stone-surround windows (c.f. also Lookout Farmhouse, Seaton Delaval). North elevation 1 storey on basement; octagonal part to left has band above basement. 9 steps up to 4-panel door under radial fanlight in round arch, with raised imposts and keystone; similarly-arched windows, above square-headed basement openings, to right of door, in left return and to rear. Moulded string below embattled parapet; flat roof. Wing to right 1 wide bay; Venetian window in similar surround above square-headed basement window, coped right gable with end stack. Right return shows blocked doorway with timber lintel. All windows are renewed small-paned casements, those on 1st floor with radial heads. Cast iron, timber. Remains of heavy boarded gate sliding in U-section girder uprights set into rock. The landward gate of the 'new cut' constructed 1761-4 to provide both an all- weather harbour entrance and a deep-water dock, a bold engineering scheme costing #10,000 expedited by the use of lime blasting. East elevation 1 storey, 2 bays; chamfered plinth, boarded window openings with slightly-projecting sills. Coped gables. Lookout tower at left end with paired 2-pane casement window on each face and pyramidal roof. To rear of tower pent porch with renewed door. Right return shows boarded window. Reinforced concrete and steel, with some brick, whitewashed. Two small rectangular buildings 20 metres apart, each with a semi-octagonal projection at the seaward corner. Each has a doorway and boarded window in the landward end, machine gun loops in the other walls, and boarded openings of curving section in the projection, under a heavy girder; added brickwork above girder level in emplacement no.1 (southern). The projections have flat roofs of a slightly-lower level to the low-pitched roof of the main part. The beam produced by a parabola-ellipse reflector could be directed through an 0.1 metre slit between curved metal shutters and still illuminate a wide area of sea; the 2 emplacements were operated by an E.L.O. (Electric Light Officer) in a director station at Link House Battery (q.v.) 300 metres to the south, and powered by an engine house 50 metres to the west, now a public lavatory (q.v.). Brick in English Garden Wall Bond 1 and 5, with cut stone dressings; Welsh slate roof except for C20 tiles on No. 5. 2 storeys + attics, each house 2 bays except for No. 7, 3 bays. 4-panel doors to Nos. 6 and 7, other doors renewed; 3-pane overlight to No. 10, others plain; all doors in renewed wooden doorcases, some with pediments. Windows mostly 4-pane sashes, with wedge lintels. Gabled roof dormers (2 to No. 7) with round-arched 4-pane sashes, shaped bargeboards and moulded finials. Ridge stacks. Rear elevation has similar dormers. No. 7 has contemporary wing with hipped roof. Interior: No.lO has dog-leg stair with stick balusters, moulded newel and ramped moulded handrail. C18 part squared stone, upper parts brick, colour-washed. Slightly-tapered circular tower. Lower part in 4 stages, divided by bands. Doorway on north, within small added porch; quatrefoil or cross loops, some blocked, to cardinal points. Upper part with 2 bands on moulded corbels, 2 windows to south. Flat roof has railing with knobbed spiral standards. Interior: C18 part has stone newel stair; ladders in top section. The lighthouse was worked in conjunction with the Low Light (rebuilt 1936) until 1985, when it was superseded by modern navigation aids on a different alignment and repainted mushroom instead of white. , 1987-07-15 1950-07-28

Squared stone with cut dressings, stuccoed and painted; blue slate roof with C20 brick stack. South front 2 storeys, in 2 parts. Taller, open-pedimented 2-bay part on right has rusticated quoins. Renewed door with overlight, in right bay, in architrave with pulvinated frieze and segmental pediment. Renewed fenestration in similar architraves with moulded sills on brackets and triangular pediments enclosing stylised foliage carving. 4-bay right return shows blocked doorway with raised stone surround. Interior much altered. Probably the oldest building in Blyth, and in the C19 attached to a brewery (now demolished) which lay behind; extensive brick-arched cellars are said to underlie the whole site. Red brick in Flemish bond with ashlar dressings and carved red sandstone panels; Lakeland slate roofs with terracotta ridges and finials, wrought-iron rails and wooden belfry with leaded fleche. Irregular F-plan with convergent ranges to rear. Free Gothic style. Front in 3 sections. Centre 3 storeys, 5 bays, symmetrical. Plinth, moulded strings, carved panels below windows. 3 steps up to central panelled double doors with lion bosses, flanked by black marble piers carrying carved lintel with chained mastiffs and panel inscribed 'POLICE STATION'. Circular carved panel with date and County Council arms under gable. Bays at each side set back at 1st floor level and flanked by octagonal turrets with pyramid caps. Slightly lower end bays have shafted doorways with lintels inscribed MAGISTRATES (left) and SOLICITORS (right). Steep hipped roof with gabled dormers and central octagonal belfry with openwork sides and panelled spire. Right part 3 storeys, 4 bays; right bay set forward with corbelled-out angle turrets and octagonal pavilion roof with dormers and decorative balcony rails. Right corner canted back, with oriel; 8-bay right return with 2 similar projecting bays. Plainer left part 2 storeys, 5 irregular bays; 2nd bay set forward with corbelled-out angle turrets and pavilion roof. Above and behind, lofty square ventilation tower had corbelled-out stage with angle turrets and pedimented gables, below octagonal upper shaft with moulded cap. To left attached moulded gate piers with gabled caps hold diagonally-boarded double doors. Paired windows with shouldered, arched and cusped heads; much carved detail. Openwork and arcaded parapets. Tall stepped-and-corniced stacks. Interior: Several stairs with wrought-iron balustrades. Courtroom has coved canopy with pediment over tribunal, and collar-beam roof on chevron-carved corbels. Magistrates' retiring room (now Courtroom No. 2) has carved mantelpiece and panelled plaster ceiling. Contemporary stained glass. , 1987-07-15 1987-07-15

Snecked tooled stone with tooled-and-margined dressings; Welsh slate roofs, replaced by C20 metal sheets on east part of north range and C20 tiles on side ranges. Coped gables. Most openings in chamfered alternating-block surrounds. Ranges around yard opening to south; barn, with pent engine-house on west, runs north from centre of north range. North range 2 storeys, 5 bays; projecting centrepiece is end of barn with boarded double doors under segmental arch, datestone above and keyed round opening in gable. Side parts each have 2 pairs of segmental arches, with 5 windows above. Side ranges single-storey; boarded doors and part-slatted windows in east range, stable doors and slit vents in west range. Barn on north has part-slatted windows and cart entrance on east with girder lintel, segmental relieving arch and recess on left for original sliding door; and round opening in gable. Engine house has boarded door and cart entrance with timber lintel and blocked flue to former chimney on west. 2 external stone stairs to boarded doors at rear of north range. Free C13 style. Stepped buttresses, plinth and sill string. Nave has double and triple lancets on north and south, 2-light plate-tracery windows in ends of aisles, gabled north porch with boarded double doors, showing scrolly ironwork, in moulded arch; and clerestorey of sexfoiled circles. Tall 3-stage tower with north-west stair turret, 2-light west window and bell openings of 2 lights within multi-chamfered arch, in sunk panel below carved cornice. Clockface on west of 2nd stage. Chancel has wall arcade on south above high-set string, incorporating two 2-light windows; angle buttresses, and 3-light plate tracery east window. Set against south wall, headstone of Dorothy Gillespy d.1776 with hand holding book in front of arrow and trumpet; scrolled foliage at sides, good lettering. Interior: Nave arcades show pointed arches of 2 orders on round piers with foliage-carved caps in late C12 style. Tall tower arch of 2 hollow-chamfered orders. Similar chancel arch, on responds of paired columns, has hoodmould with headstops. Arch to organ chamber on foliage-carved responds. Trefoil- headed aumbry in chancel. Roofs with arch-braced collar-beam trusses, those in nave on moulded corbels. Contemporary stone reredos with St. Cuthbert's Cross and symbols of evangelists. Rood loft of 1896 with carved pendant tracery. Romanesque font with inlaid marble panels; small C18 font in north aisle with cable-moulded bowl on octagonal shaft. Funeral hatchment of Adam Mansfield de Cardonnel-Lawson, 1820, in south aisle. Memorial to George Henry Shum-Storey, 1869, by font; marble sculpture of angel and cross. Buildings around rectangular yard entered at south-east corner. Single-storey south range has blocked doorway and 2 windows. West range 5 bays, all but the left 2-storeyed; 2 segmental arches, part-slatted windows above. North range has 2-storey left part with stable door flanked by part-slatted windows, and single-storey right part, continued beyond east range, with segmental arch, 2 doorways and slit vents. Single-storey east range with 2 boarded doors links to farmhouse (q.v.). Rear elevations: west range shows added shelter shed with 2 openings under timber lintels and hipped roof. North range shows boarded double doors under segmental arch in projecting west bay; circular gingang at right with large stepped outer piers and 3 (formerly 4) smaller piers between; conical roof. At far right, alongside gingang, is tall chamfered opening serving both ground floor and loft. Most openings in north and west ranges have chamfered alternating-block surrounds; coped gables to 2-storey parts, roofs of single-storey parts hip-ended. Interior: gingang has heavy east-west tie-beam separate from room structure above, where radial collars carry a central octagonal post on a metal baseplate; raking struts to 2 levels of curved purlins, curved wall-plate. Formerly part of the Shum-Storey estate based on Arcot Hall (q.v.). An interesting foldyard group with little post-C19 alteration; the gingang roof structure shows carpentry of a high standard. For the Liddells, Earls of Ravensworth. Ashlar with Lakeland slate roof. U-shaped in plan. Classical style. 2 storeys. Entrance front 9 bays with 3-bay addition of 1796 to left. Original section has rusticated quoins and central Tuscan porch with triglyph frieze. 12-pane sashes in architraves, those in older part renewed, those in 1796 part of slightly different proportions. Original section has projecting moulded cornice and plain parapet; later section has smaller cornice and honeycomb parapet. Garden front 9 bays. Slightly-projecting outer bays have rusticated quoins. Half-glazed central door in Ionic porch with pulvinated frieze and modillion cornice. 18-pane sashes with thick glazing bars in architraves. Moulded cornice and plain parapet. Hipped roof with corniced ridge stack. Interior: Entrance hall has screen of 2 Corinthiin columns, simple early C19 stair with coved plaster ceiling. 1st floor landing has screen of Corinthian columns to left and Venetian screen on right. All decoration, except the stairs, is a mid-C20 replica of the original. one'early C18 staircase remains in east wing with one twisted and one columnar baluster to a tread. Single-storey garage to rear of entrance front, not of special interest. Further mid C19, single-storey addition to left of entrance front forms part of stable block. (q.v.). Short front section, part of house, is single storey, 3 bays with 10-panel door in architrave on right. 12-pane sash in flat raised surround left of this and further left a bay window with three 12-pane sashes separated by Tuscan pilasters. Hipped roof. To rear of this a long irregular 2-storey block with central passage through to house rear courtyard. Boarded doors, boarded double doors to garage, 12- and 16-pane sashes on ground floor; 4 slatted windows and 2 later 6-pane sashes on 1st floor. All original openings in plain raised surrounds. Sandstone ashlar with marble coping for basin. Corniced octagonal column on square base supports statue of Athole, 3rd Earl of Ravensworth and his dog. He has a stick and is wearing a scarf and a trilby hat. This is surrounded by an octagonal basin with moulded coping. Late C13 or early C14,, remodelled 1845 by Countess Ravensworth; cottage C18 or early C19. Squared medieval masonry below, apparently of 2 periods with more massive earlier work in the lower courses and possibly C16 masonry above. Ashlar in C19 sections. On south, west and north sides medieval masonry reaches to 2nd floor sill level, on east side to 1st floor window only. 3 storeys. Square. Ground floor doorway on south side has medieval jambs and C17 round-headed top with continuous chamfer. On east side, 4 steps with iron railings up to Tudor-headed door of 1845 with inscription over. By the munificense of Piety of LADY RAVENSWORTH This ancient Tower which was formerly Used by the village as a place of refuge In time of rapine and insecurity Was repaired and otherwise embellished For the use and benefit of the deserving Poor. AD 1845 Windows, all of 1845, are 1- and 2-light diamond-paned casements in chamfered surrounds. ' C19 battlemented parapet, projecting on close-set rounded corbels. Higher turret in north-east corner. Interior has walls 8% ft, thick. Tunnel-vaulted ground floor. Attached, altered cottage with stone-slate roof on west side. Church in Romanesque style, house in Tudor style. Church 5 bays with round-headed doorway on right, in portal with stone pent roof; arch with 2 chamfers and a roll mould, and moulded drip stone. To left round-headed windows with dripstones. Moulded sill string. Rounded stone brackets support guttering. East end has 3 round-headed windows and rose window of 3 circles above. Gabled roof with kneelers, overlapping coping and foliated cross finial. Attached on left 2-storey, 3-bay, L-plan presbytery has door and narrow window in extruded stone porch between projecting right bay and rear wing. 2- and 3-light windows with shouldered lintels. Early C18 incorporating earlier core. Mid C18 extension to rear. Re-roofed 1863. Squared stone, c.36 inches thick on front wall ground and 1st floors. Thick walling also on right gable end. Welsh slate roof, renewed brick chimneys. Mid C18 brick extension to rear in irregular bond. 2? storeys, 5 bays. Central 6-panel door in chamfered raised surround with stone cornice hood on later stone brackets. Sash windows, those on ground floor in raised stone surrounds, those above in architraves. Concave cornice. Gabled roof, though roof marks on adjoining Castle Inn (q.v.) and also inside, reveal that there was formerly a double span roof. Gablet over centre bay dated 1863 with the Ravensworth crest. To rear small blocked windows, probably C17. Projecting single-storey, 1-bay addition with pantiled roof and tumbled-in brickwork in the gable. Interior has early C18 staircase with turned balusters and ramped and wreathed handrail.
