Designed by Lutyens in 1941, apparently in the style of old houses formerly in Narrowgate and built in 1948: 6 neat 2 storey cottages in sub-classical idiom. Formal layout: 4 cottages with projecting central gabled block over through passage and with 2 flanking cottages at right angles joined by short single storey wings. Brick on raised stone terrace. Each half of main block has 3 dormers. Two hipped and central one built up in brick. Glazing bar sash windows with flat etches, of 2 different sizes. Stone doorways with Gibbsian surrounds, pulvinated friezes and pediments. Two panel doors. Pantile roofs with 6 chimneys. Central cross gable has 2 window, kneelers, segmental archway on ground floor and Percy Crescent in gable. Flanking cottages cross gabled on 'T' plan, 2 windows on each but entrance sides, and parapets. Bracketted cast iron lamps on corners nearest main front having wrought iron top parts. Plinth. 3 steps up to central boarded door with fleur-de-lys hinges and studded star-in-lozenge pattern; 4-pane overlight. Ground floor tripartite sash windows with square-section cornices on block corbels; 16-pane sashes above; all openings in alternating-block surrounds, those to lower windows chamfered. Block corbels to eaves. Hipped roof with 2 stepped-and-corniced ridge stacks. Set back to right, single-storey kitchen with C20 window and hipped roof. Left return shows 18-pane sash stair window. Interior: 6-panel doors; panelled shutters; dog-leg open-string stair with stick balusters, moulded newels and moulded ramped handrail; contemporary fireplaces on 1st floor. Historical Note. Projecting porch with diagonal buttresses and 1st floor string; renewed glazed door in moulded 4-centred arch with hoodmould, beneath canted oriel with 2-light window and brattished cornice, and tablet with monogram of Earl of Carlisle under coped gable with moulded kneelers and finial. Main part has 2-light windows in moulded surrounds holding small-paned casements. Coped gables with moulded kneelers and finials; taller cross- gabled roof of porch has ridge stack with 2 diagonal and 1 square-set shafts. Returns each show 4-light transomed window, with pointed window in gable above. Left part has central porch with renewed half-glazed door and side-lights, under hoodmould, and single-light windows on returns; openings in chamfered surrounds. 12-pane sash or fixed windows, some renewed, those to ground floor in stone surrounds. Roof hipped to left, coped right gable; stepped-and-corniced ridge and right end stacks. Left return 2 storeys, 7 bays. Right 2-bay part is end of main block; 12-pane sashes with blocked windows to right. Left part has 12-pane sashes except for one altered to French window, and round-arched stair window on right, a 12-pane sash with radial-glazed head. Coped left gable, stepped-and-corniced ridge stacks and left end stack. Rear elevation of main range shows 2-storey outshut; varied fenestration. Restoration with rebuilding of east end and addition of south porch, 1887. Squared stone of varying types; flat lead roofs on nave and aisles, stone slates on porch, red tiles on chancel. South aisle has stepped buttresses and 4 windows, each of 2 trefoiled-headed lights with panel tracery under square head and hoodmould; old boarded and studded south door with C hinges, in moulded arch, within gabled porch with double-chamfered outer arch; 3-light east window under pointed arch. North aisle has similar fenestration, except that westernmost window is C19 copy; round-arched door with continuous roll moulding, its head cut in 2 megalithic blocks. Clerestorey of 4 small trefoiled ogee lights on north and south; moulded parapets, low-pitched roof. West end with 3 buttresses and 2 small ogee lights; broad central buttress carries heavy bell cote, perhaps post-medieval, with 3 openings; one of lower pair re-uses head of C14 2-light window; pyramid cap. 4-bay chancel with chamfered plinth and stepped buttresses; lancet windows, the stepped eastern triplet with sill string and linked hoodmould. Trefoiled low- side window on south, and renewed trefoiled priest's door with nailhead; north door with triangular monolithic head is probably C16/17 insertion. Coped east gable with vesica light and St. Andrew's Cross finial. High-pitched C19 roof externally. Interior; 4-bay north arcade with steeply-pointed double-chamfered arches on octagonal columns with holdwater bases and moulded capitals, and triple-shafted responds with stiff-leaf foliage; variously-carved stops to arch chamfers and hoodmoulds. 3-bay south arcade with wider double-chamfered arches on rectangular sections of walling chamfered at angles to form piers. Double-chamfered chancel arch on semi-octagonal re-sponds, asymmetric as south respond has been re-set at least once. Trefoiled piscina in south aisle; north aisle has trefoiled recess on north and recess for rood stair at north-east corner. Small squint on south of chancel arch, alongside corbel with nail-head and Bertram orle. Chancel plastered, with chamfered sill string; eastern lancets with shafted jambs. Triple sedilia and round-arched piscina with filleted roll moulding and carved brackets. Recss adjacentto low-side shows remains of wall painting and lintel of earlier squint with stiff-leaf foliage. C15 low-pitched roofs throughout, with arch braces and wall posts on stone corbels; bosses with angels holding shields. Remains of contemporary glass in aisle windows include Annunciation, Coronation of the Virgin and Holgrave arms. Octagonal C14 or C15 font. Section of Pre-Conquest cross in north wall of chancel; various C12/13 architectural fragments re-set as screen to vestry at west end of north aisle; 2 medieval cross slabs in floor of north aisle; and others re-used in fabric. Left return shows large projecting stack; former 2-light window with hoodmould on right and smaller chamfered window above. Rear central gabled stair wing flanked by gabled single-storey wings, that to left a C19 addition. Scattered fenestration; flat-topped half dormer near right end. Interior: At west end large fireplace with segmental chamfered arch. Parlour fireplace has moulded 4-centred arch; similar but simpler fireplace in bedroom and another with corbelled-out lintel on stairs. It is uncertain whether the present building is Bates' original house or a service or lodgings range; the Northumberland County History suggests that the main house stood on the east of the former courtyard, now a lawn. Brick in English Garden Wall Bond 1 and 3, with painted stone sills and lintels; Welsh slate roofs. 2 storeys, each house 3 bays. Central 4-panel doors except for renewed glazed doors to No. 5 and No. 9, under latticed wooden porches with basket arches on moulded corbels, cusped bargeboards and moulded finials. Sash windows, paired in end bays of Nos. 5 - 11. Banded ridge stacks between houses. Wings to rear. Backyard walls with boarded hatches and yard doors, and attached outbuildings. The least altered of the original miners' rows of Ashington; the Coal Company built 300 houses between c. 1855 and 1878. Yellow Ashingtonbrick with gauged arches to doors and windows; Welsh slate roof; shaft head gear cast iron. Rectangular 3-storey winding house with single- storey extension to west and shaft on south. 3-bay side walls and 2-bay rear have bays defined by pilasters rising to stepped-and-cogged eaves cornice, and large round-arched windows holding metal-framed casements; one rear window replaced by later doorway to external platform. Round-arched doorways and windows to lower floors, and arched doorway onto walkway from upper floor to cage. Hipped roof with gabled wooden dormer for winding ropes and raised louvre on ridge. Extension has blocked arch on south and 4-bay west wall with detail and fenestration as winding house, with some later openings inserted beneath sill level; hipped roof. Shaft head gear has skeletal frame with partial later boxing-in of corrugated sheets. Sinking of shafts commenced 1894; first coal produced Feb. 13, 1901. Squared stone with cut dressings; Welsh slate roofs except for asbestos sheets on north end of west range and west end of north range. Ranges around yard opening to south. North range single-storeyed except for 2-storey central barn. Barn has doorway flanked by Gothick windows, that on left retaining original head with intersecting glazing bars; 5 slatted windows above; coped gables. At either side, shelter shed with 3-bay segmental arcade. Single-storey east range has segmental-arched entry and boarded door; roof hipped to right. Single-storey west range has 3-bay segmental arcade (right hand arch to passage through range) with 2 boarded doors and small casement window to right; left end, with altered openings, is now part of adjacent farmhouse (q.v.). Rear elevation of barn shows cart entrance with timber lintel, and blocked opening for drive shaft of former gingang. Rear elevation of east range shows boarded double doors under timber lintel, 3-bay segmental arcade, 2 boarded doors and 3 part-slatted windows. Some arches of arcades blocked in stone or brick, with later openings in blocking. Despite some alterations,an unusual example of a smaller planned farm of c.1800; part of the estate of Bishop Shute Barrington of Durham (1791-1826).
