South front ashlar, right wing rendered with some raised quoins. Moulded eaves cornice. Sash windows: marginal glazing bar sashes to south front, glazing bar sashes to east. Porch in north east corner closed, with Ionic portico with entablature to west and a niche to south. Double span gable to east wing which has 3 chimneys, a kneeler with a plaster lion couchant and a single window to left. North front to east wing has front brick with chamfered quoins, kneelers and rusticated headstones. Later 4 light bay to right. Rear: ashlar at back of centre portion, which also has an Ionic portico. Interior: cobbled byre floor, original rear slit window visible internally, rough transverse beams carrying 1st floor include an unusual forked timber. 1st floor original window to rear is now an alcove. Attic floor beams include another forked timber. Central heavy principal rafter truss, largely concealed in C20 partition. Stable wing 1743, main block 1891 by Horatio Adamson, with datestones on porch and tower. 1743 wing tooled and margined stone with hipped slate roof. 1891 block ashlar with steeply-pitched slate roofs. 1891 building of irregular plan with large octagonal tower at the south-west corner. Free Neo- Tudor style. South (garden) front in 3 main sections: tall 3-storey battlemented tower, with stair turret, at left; lower 3-gabled 3-bay centre; 2-storey set- back rear wing. Stone mullioned-and-transomed windows, 2 battlemented 2-storey canted bays. Copings, finials and kneelers to gables. North (entrance) front of 5 irregular bays has 2-storey projecting porch with Tudor-arched entrance and octagonal extruded stair turret. Similar fenestration and roof treatment. Several stacks with tall conjoined octagonal shafts. Various heraldic panels with Bowes Lyon crest. Former stable wing to west much altered but retains north front of 2 storeys, 1:2:3 bays. 1st floor band, modillion cornice to left bay and to open pedimented gable of slightly projecting 2-bay section,with rusticated quoins and 2 carriage arches with rustication below moulded imposts and to archivolts. Quoins also rusticated. Arches now blocked. 12-pane sashes in architraves, some altered, and keyed oculus in tympanum. 2 stepped and corniced ashlar ridge stacks. Interior: main block has impressive entrance hall with ornate stair, gallery and coffered ceiling. Coursed rubble, stone dressings, slate roofs on adjacent buildings. Rectangular gatehouse at north-east corner of rectangular fortified enclosure, 2-storey east range adjoins south end of gatehouse and single-storey north range runs to west. Front of gatehouse: segmental-headed arch into passage with segmental tunnel vault, scattered fenestration including square-headed opening, with elaborate moulded surround, and 2 2-light mullioned windows with hoodmoulds. Oversailing parapet on 3 rounded stepped courses. Rear elevation similar, with small rectangular lights and one 2-light window over entrance passage, parapet with 2 projecting spouts. Interior has 2 square-headed doorways on right side of passage, the second into newel stair in internal circular turret. Various doorway openings and fireplaces. Altered east range has several C16 or C17 window openings with chamfered surrounds towards courtyard and one 1st floor door with chamfered segmental-pointed head. Roof has old principal rafter trusses with collars. North range, now byres, C18 incorporating earlier masonry towards the west end of the north wall. Segmental-headed arches to courtyard, blocked ventilation slits in rear elevation, principal-rafter roof trusses with collars. Willimontswick was a fortified manor house rather than a true castle. It is of some note historically as the seat of the Ridley family and birthplace of Bishop Ridley (d.1555). C.
