Dated 1768. Ashlar and squared sandstone. House has Welsh slate roof and stone chimney. Kennel with walled yards on south, east and west; house on west side of south yard. Gothick style. Pointed doorways and windows with Y-tracery in flat-faced, chamfered surrounds. Single-storey, 3-bay kennel block: central doorway, flanking windows and battlements on rubble south wall; similar features plus cross-loops on 2-bay ashlar returns; datestone inscribed L A I 1768 (Lancelot Allgood) below central embrasure on west return; large central opening and flanking doorways on north; roofless. 2-storey, 2-bay house: ashlar quoins; blocked doorway and 2-light window, with square opening above, on west; low-pitched roof with coped gables and end stack; flight of stone steps under pointed archway on north return; similar door and window details on rear. South yard enclosed on 2 sides by tall flat-coped rubble wall; pointed archway near junction with kennel block. East yard enclosed on 3 sides by low ashlar wall with chamfered coping; raised section incorporating pointed archway in centre of east wall. West yard enclosed on 2'sides by low rubble wall with chamfered coping. Entrance front: 3 segmental arches with roughly-squared voussoirs on square-plan piers; renewed casements and door inserted into partly-infilled archways; external stone stair at left leads to first-floor boarded door under segmental relieving arch; 2 rows of breathers above. Steeply-pitched roof has raised verges with reverse-stepped gables. Corniced right end stack; rebuilt left end stack. 3 casements in C20 openings set high in right return. Door lintel has sunk shaped panel with raised letters: WBE 1740. Small boarded window to right (possibly a fire window). Early C19 4-pane shop window to left has plain pilaster surround, projecting sill and fascia with bracketed hood. 2 replaced casements above in deep reveals. Roof has coped left gable and left end stack with water table and top ledge. Blocked gable-end doorway, with massive roughly-shaped alternating jambs and lintel, through archway on left return. Tall boulder plinth and scattered openings on rear. Set-back 2-storey, 3- window rear wing of 2 builds: C20 door and casements; low-pitched stone-tiled roof has central ridge stack with water table. Former 2-storey, 2-window cottage at right-angles on rear of wing: boarded door, with flush lintel and alternating jambs, in projecting gable end; stone-tiled roof with end stack. Early C13; restored 1870 by R.J. Johnson (nave west end and bellcote rebuilt; lancets inserted in aisles; roof pitches heightened; interior redecorated). Coursed and random rubble; green slate roofs. Wide aisled nave (almost square plan) with vestry on north aisle; chancel. Early- English style. 4-bay nave. Buttressed aisles have small lancets and steep pent roofs. Partly-restored pointed north and south aisle doorways with colonnettes. 3 original lancets on both sides of clerestory. Steep nave roof. Rebuilt, buttressed west end has 2 tall lancets with round window above. Rebuilt gabled bellcote with twin openings. Lower 4-bay chancel with lancet windows. Blocked 2-light, mullioned low-side window on chancel south wall. East end has clasping buttresses with offsets and group of 3 stepped lancets above sill string. Steep chancel roof. Gabled 2-bay vestry. Interior. Nave: arcades have pointed double-chamfered arches, under hoodmoulds, on filleted responds and circular piers with moulded bases and irregular octagonal capitals; head-stop over south-east pier; clerestory windows, with splayed rear arches, set above spandrels of arcade; 1870 arch- braced, king-post roof. Small trefoil-headed piscina near east end of south aisle. Chancel: double-chamfered, pointed arch under hoodmould with head- stops (inner order on filleted responds); semi-octagonal rood-screen corbels flanking arch; 3 east end lancets have trefoil-headed rear arches and colonnettes with shaft rings; restored sedilia has 3 stepped-up seats under trefoil-headed arches on filleted shafts; small piscina in trefoil-headed niche; roof, similar to nave, possible painted 1881 to desgin by C.E. Kempe. Fittings, monuments and stained glass. In nave: hexagonal stone font probably re-cut with crude inscribed decoration and letters: R.P. July 26 1676; roughly-carved circular stoup on column; 4 north aisle windows 1897 by Morris and Co.; north aisle east window 1891 by C.E. Kempe. In chancel: Rood screen 1923 by Hicks and Charlewood; 3 elaborate medieval grave slabs and recumbent effigy of knight (possibly Thomas De Blenkinsopp died 1388) in sanctuary; 1869 carved marble reredos depicting Nativity of Christ; Memorial stone to John Ridley died1632 and aedicular wall monument to Wm. Glenwhelt has double- range plan with bastle remains in left end of rear range; cottage at slight angle on right return of front range. 2-storey street front on sloping site. 6 bays (each house 3 bays; cottage bays more closely spaced). Chamfered plinth at left, first-floor sill band and raised-and-chamfered quoins. Door surround (to Glenwhelt), in second bay from left, has Corinthian columns and segmental pediment containing cartouche inscribed: J A M 1757. Broken stone sundial with sun-face above doorway. Other surrounds on ground floor have raised edges, friezes with blocks of vermiculated rustication and cornices: doorway (to cottage) in second bay from right; 12-pane sash at left end; replaced casement in centre; tripartite window at right end. Horse-mounting block to left of cottage doorway. First-floor replaced casements and sashes in surrounds with raised edges. Steeply-pitched roof (2-span on Glenwhelt) has slightly-swept eaves, coped gables and shaped kneelers. Corniced end and ridge stacks. Rear range: possible bastle in left bay has 1.5-metre thick wall, large alternating quoins and 2 inserted sashes. C19 single-storey wing at right-angles on right rear. INTERIOR: of Glenwhelt: mid C18 fittings including moulded stone fireplaces, panelled doors in architraves; 2-flight dogleg cut-string staircase with 2 turned balusters per tread and ramped handrail. Room on ground-floor left has panelled dado, overmantel with egg-and-dart moulding and modillion cornice.
