Ashlar with Welsh slate roof. 2-storey double-span main block and projecting rear wing; 3-storey, one-bay tower. 6-bay garden front with l-bay tower on left. Raised alternating quoins. Windows in main block in raised surrounds with mid-jamb projections and 4-pane sashes on ground floor; 12-pane sashes above. Slightly later tower has large tripartite French window in architrave with cornice above on brackets. 1st and 2nd floor windows are 2- light in architraves. The whole front has sill bands to each floor, top cornice and balustrade. Doorway to rear probably later C19. Round-headed with closely-set radiating glazing bars to fanlight and finely-moulded eared architrave with keystone; cornice over. Pierced by doorway which has plank door with deliberately asymmetrical alternating block surround and inclined lintel. C15 altered in C18 and several periods up to late C19. Older parts random rubble, late C19 parts ashlar. Welsh slate roofs. Rambling irregular plan. Garden front has doorway with bolection- moulded eared surround, cornice and pulvinated frieze on stone consoles, and swan-neck pediment. C20 French window to right. Small C15 window to left. On 1st floor 4 renewed 12-pane sashes in architraves with moulded sills and wedge lintels, above architraves grooved in imitation of voussoirs. Left of this the stump of a demolished wing, and left again the Victorian addition with projecting chimney and 2-light mullioned windows. Rear of this block has pointed- arch staircase window with intersecting glazing bars. Rear wings have various windows C17 - C20. Gabled roofs. C15 block has flat coping with kneelers; and C17 finials with roll moulding and obelisks on right gable. One stone gable stack, one tall brick chimney and many C19 brick stacks. Interior of C15 block has walls 5 - 6 feet thick and a tunnel-vaulted ground floor 62 feet long with a mural chamber on south side. Ceiling of vault given plaster rib vault with, in parts, triple shafted pilasters and Gothick capitals; probably c1820 and altered later. Circular iron Gothick staircase with pointed arches between square balusters, also c1820. Attached to rear of C15 block is arcade of four C17/early C18 round brick arches. House belonged to Tynemouth Priory C12 - C15. The drive was used by George Stephenson for early experiments in making steam engines run uphill without rack and pinion. C17 core, altered C18 and early C19. Random rubble with pantiled roof. 2 storeys, 2 broad bays with almost central plank door in plain surround. Ground-floor windows are late C19 sashes. Smaller upper windows are Yorkshire sashes. Gabled roof with thin raised coping and reversed crow-step gables, upper part of gable partly rebuilt in brick. Rebuilt brick end stacks. Interior: 2 large C18 fireplaces with flat lintels. Upper rooms formerly open to roof, which is said to have curved principals with tie and collar beams. Late C17. Altered and extended c1720. Roof rebuilt and upper storey altered early C19. Further addition c1930. For the Shafto family. Work of c1720 done for Admiral Delaval. Dressed stone, rough-cast on garden side, with Welsh slate roofs. 3 storeys. Double span with 2-storey L-shaped addition to left. Entrance front: main block of 7 bays, has alternating rusticated quoins and central 6-panelled door in round-arched Gibbs surround. Ground-floor windows have raised surrounds with triple keystones and 18-pane sashes with thick glazing bars. Similar glazing bars in architraves on 1st floor. Architraves to 2nd floor, enlarged in early Cl9 when roof was raised, hold 9-pane sashes with thin glazing bars. Panelled cornice was also added. 2-storey, 4-bay wing to right, probably C17, has 8-pane sashes with thick glazing bars on ground floor and Yorkshire sashes above. Projecting kitchen wing has fine ashlar facade but older masonry to rear. Projecting pedimented centre of one tall storey, 2 bays; and flanking 2-storey single bays. Central tall round- arched windows in architraves. Flanking ground-floor windows are 24-pane sashes with thick glazing bars. Oculus windows on 1st floor. Garden front, 7 bays, has door with Gibbs surround, large triple keystone and pediment. Sash windows, with intermediate glazing bars removed, in raised surrounds. 2nd-floor windows similar to entrance front. C20, 2-storey, 4-bay addition to right in similar style. Both spans have shaped gables with kneelers and many octagonal chimneys with concave cornices. Interior has 2 panelled rooms on ground floor. One has fireplace with terms and scrolled pedimented overmantel. The other has enriched panelling, fireplace within full-height Corinthian pilasters and enriched modillion cornice. An earlier panelled room on first floor has fireplace with pulvinated surround and frieze with plaster heads and angels. Many other C17, early C18 and early C19 fireplaces. Many 2-panelled doors in front block, 6-panelled doors elsewhere. Late C17 open-well stair with vase balusters and heavily-moulded handrail. Gabled roof with flat coping, kneelers and 2 stone corniced end stacks. Single-storey cartshed to right with double entry and ?-slatted window. North range is 2-storey byre with granary over. 2 segmental arches to byres. Plank pitching door above in chamfered alternating-block surround; also ventilation slits and one ?-slatted window. East range is single-storey byres and stable. Two plank doors in chamfered alternating-block surrounds. Ventilation slits. Slightly later building attached to rear of north range is 2-storey cartshed with store room above. 2 segmental arches. Two 4-pane windows on 1st floor and pitching door on left return have chamfered surrounds and shouldered lintels. Round arch in archivolt has ox skull with tasseled horns on keystone. Flanking rectangular panels with Adam-style rosettes and fans. Pediment above has cartouche with feathers. Lodges have 4-pane sashes. Fluted frieze and cornice; and corniced parapet with blind balustraded panels. Lodge inner returns have plank doors with pulvinated overpanels. Stone corniced end stacks and hipped roofs. Left range is single-storey, formerly stables, now storage. Plank door to right in chamfered alternating-block surround. Right range is in 3 sections with roofs stepping down from each section. Left part threshing barn with circular gingang to rear. Middle section was hay store with ventilation holes in gable end. Right section cart shed with 3 segmental arches. Gingang has square rubble piers and Welsh slate conical roof with ball finial. In centre of farmyard is carriage house with segmental arch and double arched door. Gabled roofs. Unbuttressed west tower has 2-light round-arched bell openings, with baluster mullion and pierced roundel over, in round-headed thin raised frame. Further small round- headed windows below, 2 on south side and one on west. South porch has outer doorway with 2 continuous chamfers and inner doorway with 2 orders of colonettes and roll-moulded round arches. Windows to 2-bay nave and to transept aisle are paired Victorian lancets but transepts and chancel have very long C13 lancets with buttresses between. 3 exceptionally tall stepped lancets at east end. Renewed priest's door. Vestry has 12-pane Georgian windows. Steeply pitched roofs with flat coping and foliated cross finials on all gables. Interior: Arcades have 2 chamfers and hoodmoulds with figured label stops. Round piers and responds except for 2 octagonal ones at angle of transepts and aisles. One south capital partly carved with foliage in C14. Other capitals plainly moulded, those on north side later, probably early C14. Triple shafted corbel responds to transept aisles, that on north side with nailhead, on south side with big dogtooth. Chancel arch has semi-octagonal responds and similar capitals. East windows have roll-moulded surrounds. Trefoiled sedilia with renewed colonettes and capitals. Round C13 font on 4 colonettes. Finely-carved C18 black marble monument on sanctuary floor. Painted Royal coat of arms on west wall. Late Victorian pulpit, screen, lectern and choir stalls. Windows by Wailes and by Clayton and Bell. 2-panelled door to vestry. Monument to Thomas Bewick in south porch. Monuments attached to wall outside. Bell family transept south wall. Interior has fine timber nave roof with king and queen posts and traceried frieze along walls. Chancel roof is panelled timber barrell vault. Above the arch is a medieval stone crowned head. C20 door and flanking canted bays at right,. C19 sashes on 1st floor. Further short stretch of nailhead frieze at top right. Gabled roof with raised flat coping; external ashlar corniced end stacks. interior has medieval external masonry exposed in bathroom including blocked window and wood lintel. Further masonry in bedroom including C16 fireplace with roll-moulded surround and relieving arch over. The house was a chantry chapel from the C13. East and west windows are 5-light with panel tracery. Organ chamber and vestry, under catslide roof, also treated as transept internally. Gables are raised with ridged and roll-moulded coping. Wrought-iron vane on tower. Interior: Canted barrel-vaulted wood panelled ceiling with carved bosses and frieze. Chancel ceiling is painted with Tudor roses and foliage and has carved relief frieze of vines. Pews, pulpit and doors have linenfold carving. Screens and altar rails with panels of tracery. In second bay a door with margined overlight + triple keystone. Later C19 canted bay to left. Other windows 12- pane sashes with projecting cills. Wide, off-centre door in slightly-chamfered alternating-block surround. Yorkshire sashes and a small monolith window; small, blocked upper windows. Imposing gabled cross-wing of 2? storeys has, on first floor, a cross window, with low-set transom, in cable-moulded surround. Similar ground-floor window has lost its cross; and top window has no transom. Set-back early C18 right section has a round-arched staircase window. Traces of C18 refenestration of the cross-wing can be seen on left return and inside. Windows generally early C19 sashes with glazing bars. Steeply pitched roofs to older parts. Cross- wing has large central stone stack with 4 brick shafts; old part has C19 tall corniced brick end chimneys. Interior: 2 early C18 stone fireplaces with bolection mouldings, pulvinated friezes and cornices. Many 2-panelled doors in rear wing, and 6-panelled doors and internal shutters in C19 block. Early C19 staircase with wreathed handrail. Back stair has C17 handrail but C18 and C19 balusters. Ground floor has 2 tripartite sashes. 1st floor has 3 9-pane sashes. l-bay lower extension on right has 9-pane sashes on both floors. Entrance side 2 storeys, 3 bays, with central flat-topped stone porch and door of 6 flush panels. 12-pane sashes left and right, 9-pane above. All the openings have chamfered reveals. To left of entrance front a one-bay extension with single-storey lean- to in front. Concave eaves soffit. Gabled roof with ridged coping and 2 stone gable stacks plus one similar on extension.
