Later marble fireplace with a panel above, flanked by fluted Ionic pilasters supporting pulvinated frieze. Turned bannisters to stairs. Originally founded by St Wilfrid circa 673 - the crypt dates this period. The choir, transepts and tower are circa 1180; the nave was burnt 1296 and rebuilt in 1908 by Temple Moor. Much recent restoration. Embattled crossing tower. 5 bay aisled chancel, the easternmost taken down and rebuilt slightly higher circa 1858; fragments of possibly late-Saxon apse below. 3 bay transepts with eastern aisles. South bay of south transept has slype with gallery to night stairs above. 6 bay nave, Exterior uniformly early English, apart from decorated tracery of nave windows. Lancets, corbel table etc. Interior also chiefly Early Englih, much restored and altered. Wooden ceiling, vaulted aisles, with dado arcades, to transepts and chancel. High stilted arches on west wall of north transept with clustered shafts. 2 chantries - to Prior Ogle (d.1410), and to Prior Leschman (1480-91), the latter with a cowled effigy and much rude stone sculpture. Early C15 sedilia with painted panels, including the dance of death. Delicate Rood Screen (1491-1523) with panel painting and rich woodwork. Misericords in stalls. Font at west end of nave with, for base, part of a pilier cantonne from the north transept with a dog tooth central shaft. Built for a Darlington Banker and extended in sympathetic style early in C20. Large baronial building with Gothic ornament on a basically classical arrangement, symmetrical to south, very unsymmetrical to west (entrance front) 2 storeys, attic and basement. 6 bays to south, 4 to west. Snecked smooth rubble with ashlar dressings. Plate glass sash windows. Many gables, some crow-stepped, 2 turrets with conical roofs and one, a dormer on south front, with pyramidal roof. The skyline is enlivened by several tall chimney stacks with conjoined circular shafts having roll moulded cornices and fillets. South front has a rythm of canted bays alternating with flat bays, and tall gabled dormers. Entrance front has variety of projections, bays and turrets including large crenellated porch with gabled panel over ogival doorway. The south front parapet extends over a 2 storey bay to right of west front. Quasi-machicolation in 2nd bay from left to south, above 3 pointed cusp sash windows, and in 3 light oriel to west. Terrace to south with buttressed ramparts to east and west, wide central steps to lower terrace with ha-ha. Interior: Gothic cornices and applied shafts to doorcases in hall which also has large crenellated fireplace. Carved corbels to beam over staircase, newel carved with stiff leaf ornament. Parlour contains wooden Italian fireplace with carved scenes (eg Birth of Venus). Pointed arch at head of staircase. Library, in early C20 addition, panelled with 4 centred arch headed fireplace. , 2013-01-29 1976-05-18
