Waiting room, office and store, and the lamps probably late C19. House, platforms and porter's room ashlar, the other buildings wood boarding; Welsh slate roofs. House: Tudor style. Single storey towards platform, 2 storeys to rear. 2 plus 3 bays. Lower left section has 2 boarded doors. Right section has one- light window in the centre and flanking 3-light mullioned windows. Gabled roof with 2 end stacks of paired, corniced shafts. Waiting room and offices: single storey, 4 bays. Panelled doors in 2nd and 4th bays, small-paned casement windows in 1st and 3rd bays. Original telegraph notice attached and enamel signs on doors. Gabled roof. Porter's room separated from office by flight of stone steps. Single storey, one bay with boarded door. Gabled roof with banded end stack. 2 storeys to rear with single-storey, 5-bay lean-to which has boarded doors in outer bays and two 12-pane and one 18-pane Yorkshire sashes. Two 8-pane Yorkshire sashes on 1st floor. On each platform 2 Victorian gas lamps probably re-set on later concrete posts. Nave C12. West end raised into a tower C13. Restored 1836 and again in 1870 when the nave was extended, the chancel rebuilt and the door and windows replaced. Tower restored 1886. Squared stone; Welsh slate roof. Romanesque style. Chancel, nave and west tower. Nave south side is C12 as far as the mid-point buttress. Blocked south door with 3 orders of arches, the outer order with worn beakhead, the whole set slightly forward from wall face under a gable; an C18 sundial on the gable. Original C12 corbel table and large buttress, formerly at south-east corner of nave. Extended to east, new windows and new south doorway added in similar style in 1870. Above the corbel table the tower was raised. On the south side it has 2 lancet windows and 2 slit windows to the newel stair. On the west aide the roof mark of the gable of the original towerless church can be seen, as can the band where the corbel table was cut away. This side has 2 faucets and a C12 window with shafts. The corbel table formerly continued on the north side; one arch remains. 2-bay chancel in similar style. Interior: the tower was built to be defensible. It has a tunnel-vaulted ground floor blocking the C12 doorway, and a stone newel stair in the corner. Nave and chancel entirely C19 inside. Chancel arch quite elaborate with chevron and billet moulding. King-post roofs with arched braces resting on stone corbels with good naturalistic carving. F.R. Restored and converted into 5 cottages in 1940s. Ashlar with Welsh slate roof. Iron railings. L-plan with 7 cottages stepping down the hill end the 8th at right-angles at the bottom. Single storey. Each cottage was originally 3 bays with central boarded door and small square windows in raised surrounds. Only the 8th cottage remains exactly like this. Each of the others has had one window extended to 2 or 3 lights in similar style. Cottages 1, 4 and 6 have also had their doors blocked off. Gabled roofs with flat coping. Rendered end stacks of one and two shafts. Low walls with chamfered coping. Railings and gates with round spearhead standards and urn finials to principals. Small panelled doorway in north-east corner is flanked by 4 wood panels of naturalistic open-work carving. Arbour against centre of east wall with 4 Roman Doric columns. House set against north wall. Single storey, 3 bays with moulded plinth and rusticated quoins. Pedimented centre bay, originally an open temple front, has two Roman Doric columns in antis; triglyph frieze. Flanking round- headed windows with radiating glazing bars. Hipped roof. Keyed Venetian windows on returns. Garden west wall has large segmental apse with 6 round-headed niches separated by broad flat pilasters. Little Lakeland slate roof over. Norman Shaw for Thomas Leyland. The rest of the house was demolished in 1933. Ashlar, roof not visible. Baroque style. One tall storey. Pedimented doorway with Gibbs surround and pulvinated frieze. Large 9-pane fixed windows with projecting moulded sills and large triple keystones. Above each window an oculus in architrave. Between each bay bold pilasters with banded rustication. Interior is also faced in ashlar and rusticated throughout. Attached giant Tuscan columns support segmental arches with coffered soffits. Shallow domed ceiling. R. The porch has rounded, rusticated corners. The centre section has 12-pane sashes flanked by narrow 8-pane sashes on ground and 1st floor, 9- and 6-pane sashes on 2nd floor. Outer bays have 12-pane sashes and 9-pane sashes on 2nd floor. Eaves cornice. Hipped roof with 2 tall, corniced ridge stacks. 5-bay concave linking wings with round-headed arches, square piers, archivolts and full-length glazing with radiating glazing bars. Arcade to right has conservatory behind. End pavilions have Venetian windows in round-arched recesses; hipped roofs with 2 corniced ridge stacks. To rear centre block has 3-storey, 3-bay bow window. Linking 5-bay wings have keyed round-headed windows. Pavilions have Venetian windows. Interior: Oval geometric stair with wrought-iron balusters and boldly wreathed and moulded handrail. Many plaster friezes, with acanthus scrolls and other foliage. Modillion cornice in entrance hall. In Morning Room a pine fireplace with gesso decoration of entwined roses and thistles, also seaweed and shells and sheaves of corn. Drawing room has white and coloured marble fireplace with Ionic pilasters. The conservatory has mid-Victorian iron work and a niche with terracotta colonettes and the crestof Sir Hubert Jerningham who lived here in the late 1860s. Dated 1819 by Prideaux John Selby. Random rubble lined with brick in English garden wall bond. Flat coping. Walls c. 12 ft. high along north side, ramped down to c. 9 ft, along east and west sides, and ramped down again to c. 5 ft. on south side. North wall has 2 boarded doors with segmental heads Lintel of one is inscribed PJS This was a heated wall. 1819. Similar doorway in east wall. Rounded north-east corner and 2 lean-to buttresses on outside of east wall. Windows with small-paned upper sashes, plate glass lower sashes, (windows in No. 11 are renewed). Hipped roof with 3 small ridge stacks and large patterned terracotta chimney pots. C12, C13 and C14. Restored 1830 and later C19. Squared stone and ashlar; chancel and north transept have stone slate roofs; other roofs not visible. West tower, nave, aisles, transepts and chancel. Tower C13 or early C14. 4 stages with offsets. Y-tracery window on ground floor, lancet bell openings; top storey C19 with battlements. Aisles embrace tower. South aisle rebuilt early C14; renewed 2- and 3-light Decorated windows. C19 south door. Low-pitched roof behind parapet. South transept also has renewed Decorated windows. C13, 5-bay chancel with crypt. Paired lancets under continuous dripstone. Former priest's door in 2nd bay has surround of l83O with high gable. Rainwater. heads dated 1830 with arms of Lord Crewe. East end has 3 lancets of even height separated by buttresses. Corbel table, parapet and steeply-pitched roof. North transept in small squared C12 stone has narrow east lancet (cf interior), renewed Decorated windows elsewhere. Steeply-pitched roof. North aisle in larger Medieval ashlar has 4 renewed Decorated windows. Interior: Indications of earlier Romanesque church include round rere-arch of north transept east window, masonry of south transept north wall, and uneven build of east end of nave. 3 triple-chamfered tower arches. 4-bay nave has late C12 - early C13 north arcade with round piers, simply-moulded capitals and double-chamfered arches; 3rd pier has stiff-leaf capital, east arch is very narrow. South arcade similar but slightly later. Transept arches have 2 slight chamfers towards nave and north aisle, unmoulded towards transept; very wide C14 double-chamfered arch into south aisle. C16 clerestory windows, now beneath roof; also C16 square newel stair in tower. Tower ceiling includes old forked beam associated with legend of death of St. Aidan. North aisle has old arched tiebeams. Chancel: Double-chamfered chancel arch with large Decorated squint to right. Arcaded side walls with pairs of arches rising over each pair of lancets and narrow arch between; they rise from corbels which were formerly the capitals of shafts which have been removed. C14 sedilia, piscina and aumbry. C14 tomb recess with effigy of Knight. 2 low-side windows, the south one blocked. Elaborate C19 open timber roof. C17 altar rails. Wall monuments to:- Claudius Forster, 1623, a cartouche in aedicule; Forster family, 1711, large and well- carved. Large stone reredos with statues of saints, 1895 by W.S. Hicks. North aisle: recumbent effigy of Grace Darling, 1844 by Raymond Smith, formerly in the churchyard; Sharpe memorial of 1839 by Chantrey. Hatchments in nave.
