Yard walls have flat coping; mounting block set against internal face of west wall. At north-west corner of small yard, pair of pigsties with henhouse over; 2 low sty doorways, small window with vertical glazing bars above. Gabled right return has raised boarded door. Central 6- panel door with tall overlight, modillion cornice. 4 pilasters rise from screen cornice to 1st floor sill band; central 4-pane sash window flanked by blind panels with sills stepped down. Moulded eaves cornice and pediment. Stepped and corniced brick chimneys project towards rear of each return. Tall walls with flat stone coping have buttresses flanking cottage;and at either side late C19 sash windows under flat gauged brick arches. C14 tower with additions of C16 and C17. Extensively restored and east wing added 1935 by Caroe and Lord Gort. Dressed stone and ashlar with Welsh slate roof. 3-storey tower to left with 2-storey, 6-bay house attached to right and C20 wing on extreme right. Tower: partly ruinous in 1930's. South side has C17 doorway with moulded surround; on south-east corner at 2nd floor level the start of a rounded corbel for a corner turret (cf. Belsay Castle). On west side several slit windows and one C16 window with moulded surround; other windows are 2- and 3-light mullioned windows of 1935. Attached hall and former kitchen wing, refaced in late C17, has steps up to central 2-leaf, 6-panel door in surround with bolection moulding, pulvinated oak-leaf frieze and scrolled pediment. Mullioned-and-transomed cross windows, with roll-moulded sills and cornices on ground floor. The crosses are renewed. Sundial of 1711 above door, brought from Belsay in C20. Moulded cornice, and panelled parapet added 1935. Gabled roof with external stacks. C20 wing recessed to right in similar style. Rear facade is irregular. It has tower to right with one cruciform slit window. Left of the tower is the hall with enormous external chimney stack. Left of this a projecting 3-storey C16 staircase wing which has, on ground floor two 2-light windows with segmental heads to lights; scattered fenestration with 2- and 3-light mullioned windows above. Left of this the former kitchen, now the dining room, with another enormous external chimney now covered on ground floor by 1935 entrance, with doorway in C17 style. 1935 wing to left. Interior: Tower has vaulted ground floor and stair in thickness of wall; C14 door with pointed arch and continuous chamfered surround (cf. Belsay) between tower and hall. 1st floor ceiling with broach-stopped beams brought from elsewhere; on 1st and 2nd floors two C17 fireplaces with moulded surrounds. Drawing room (former hall) has large fireplace with bolection-moulded surround, and Palladian doorcase with pulvinated frieze. Late C17 staircase with dumb-bell balusters. Dining room has large fireplace with segmental head and a doorway with Tudor- arched lintel inscribed RF 1622 IF for Fenwick. Country Life Vol. LXXXVIII p. 278. Squared stone with cut dressings; Welsh slate roofs. Irregular plan; the surviving part of the 1810 house forms an L-plan wing at the east end of the Dobson section which consists of a grouping of 3 square or rectangular towers, with further west outbuildings around an irregular quadrangle. 1810 house Gothick style, 1830-37 parts castellated neo-Tudor. North (entrance) front in two main sections. 2-storey, 3-bay left part is 1810 house: plinth, moulded cornice and parapet. Centre bay shows tall 24- pane sash window with intersecting glazing bars under arched head; similar window now blocked to left; later 3-light transomed window with 2-light mullioned window above on right. Low-pitched hipped roof. 1830-37 right part, set forward, in 3 sections: 3-storey tower on left has central 2-storey projecting porch with tall Gothic arch under hoodmould, and taller turret set back to right. Set-back 2-storey, 2-bay centre and set further back 3-storey tower with blank shield in large panel below parapet, and corbelled- out oriel set diagonally at right end. Mullioned and mullioned-and-transomed windows, with small-paned sashes and casements, under hoodmoulds. Embattled parapets; tall stacks with dentilled cornices. To far right, at lower level, embattled yard wall with segmental-pointed carriage arch and small tower at right end. 3-bay left return shows central 3-window Gothick bow, with French windows, and 1st floor sill band below 16-pane sashes; all openings with intersecting glazing bars in heads. Similar 12-pane sashes to 1st floor of flanking bays. South (river) front: 2-storey 1810 part has projecting right end bay with mid-C19 canted bay window. 1830-37 left part has 4-storey towers, the left with a corbelled-out 2nd-floor oriel, flanking a 3-storey centre. Interior: 1810 part incorporates pre-C19 remains; inserted C16 barrel vault in cellar; north wall of conventual range, now internal, has C13 moulded segmental lavatory arch and blocked openings including C16 mullioned windows. Stair hall and large drawing room have plaster work of c.1830 with enriched cornices and ceiling borders; of this period are the panelled door architraves and reveals, and the iron staircase with patterned panel balusters on alternate treads, shaped tread ends, wreathed handrail and spiral curtail. Small south drawing room, with added bay of c.1860, has enriched cornice of this period and dado panelling. Similar detail in other rooms of 1810 part but 1830-37 extension gutted internally. Incorporated in east wall C12 chevron- moulded voussoir and head of C12 cross slab. Gabled vestry with 2-light window. C19 coped gables and finial crosses. Interior: Plastered. Moulded semicircular tower arch with chamfered imposts on stepped jambs. Arcade of double-chamfered pointed arches, with chamfered hood to nave, on octagonal piers with moulded capitals and bases, and corbel responds. Squared stone with cut dressings; roof of small red clay tiles. Cruciform plan; nave with north aisle of 6 narrow bays, low crossing tower, transepts with 2-bay eastern aisles and 2-bay aisleless presbytery; some ruins of the chapter house vestibule or slype adjoin the south transept. Transitional style. Nave: Main north entrance in 2nd bay from west: round arch of 3 orders with beakheads, chevron, zigzag and billet hood; carved capitals to jamb shafts; large dog-tooth to jambs and to outer angles of gabled projection holding doorway with arcade of 3 trefoiled arches above. Aisle wall has chamfered plinth, pilaster buttresses and broad lancet windows. Tall round-headed clerestorey windows. West end: nave north-west turret with shafted angles and pyramidal cap; the south-west turret which had fallen before the restoration, rebuilt to eaves level only. Wall arcade of pointed arches below a similar but taller arcade incorporating 3 tall lancets; jambs shafts missing; 3 stepped lancets in the gable. South nave wall arcade of trefoiled arches between the 2 processional doors under C19 pent tiled canopies: western door has moulded round arch on shafted jambs with dogtooth, all much renewed; eastern door has moulded and ornamented arch with tegulated hood and carved capitals to former jamb shafts. Above is rebate for timbers of cloister walk roof, and 5 tall round-headed windows. South transept: west wall has round- arched moulded doorway with waterleaf capitals to former jamb shafts, and twin rebated book lockers, with 2 tall round-headed windows above; south wall has clasping buttresses, blocked door to right stair and C19 Romanesque wheel window in gable; attached transverse arch and fragments of side walls of formerly-vaulted east-west chamber; east wall has lancets to aisle and round- arched clerestorey. In angle of south transept and presbytery, above aisle roof, is small statue in C16 canopied niche. North transept has similar east elevation; north wall has central projecting stair turret with small loops, flanked by lancets with round-headed windows above; turret is capped by gabled late C19 bellcote with cusped bargeboards. North end of aisle has small C14 trefoiled ogee window. Presbytery has lancets with round-headed windows above in side walls,with strings at sill levels; 3 tiers of lancets, the uppermost stepped, in east end, divided by buttresses which pass from square to semi- octagonal to keeled section as they rise; C19 finial cross. All parts of the church have a C19 eaves,cornice on moulded corbels. The central tower rises little above the roof ridges, and has a plain parapet. Interior: Nave arcade of double-chamfered pointed arches with chamfered hoods, on octagonal piers with moulded caps; tympanum openings, above piers, of twin moulded round arches. Chamfered string between arcade and tympanum, moulded string between tympanum and clerestorey. Aisle has moulded springers for vault, never completed. Crossing has tall moulded pointed arches on shafted jambs. Transepts show similar detail to nave; aisles, each formerly a pair of chapels, have quadripartite vaults with chamfered ribs; piscina in southernmost chapel. Presbytery has string courses at sill levels and double-arched recess with piscina on south; blocked shoulder-arched door to former sacristy on north. C19 arch-braced collarbeam roofs. The only medieval monuments are a fine cross slab with an inscription to Prior William, a suffragan Bishop of Durham, d.1484, and a few plain slabs; several C17 and C18 ledger stones. Pink marble slab to Cadogan Hodgson Cadogan d.1888, the restorer, in centre of presbytery. C19 tiled floors throughout. Left bay is south wall of medieval tower, now 1 1/2 storeys with blocked ground-floor window and attic sash under gable of c.1900 capped by stepped and corniced stack. To right south wall of 1595 block refaced 1723, 2 storeys. 4-panel door with 2-pane overlight in stop-chamfered surround of 1900 and renewed 16-pane sash in raised stone surround. 1st floor 2 renewed 12-pane sashes in flush stone surrounds with narrow chamfer, and slightly projecting sills. Right end gable coped with kneelers and renewed stack. On right return former door, now window, in raised and chamfered stone surround. Left return 2 storeys, 2 bays, largely refaced 1923, with plain sash windows of 1900, central small blocked ground-floor window. Rear elevation shows stair-turret partly corbelled- out, with 2 small chamfered-surround windows and weathering of roof of destroyed north range. Both turret and tower at right now have gables of 1900, with sash windows. To left a 3-bay outshut of 1900 heightened c.1980. Old lintel from wall behind re-set at 1st floor level, inscribed MOA (Martin Ogle aedificat?) 1595 IF. Interior: doorway with chamfered surround at foot of newel stair, blocked doorway, with chamfered surround and relieving arch above, from stair to sitting room. Cellar beneath kitchen has brick barrel vault; bedroom above sitting room has panelled wall with fireplace surround, both probably of 1723. Decorated style. 3-bay nave with square-headed, 2-light windows under hoodmoulds. North porch has angle buttresses, door with continuous moulding under hoodmould and shield in square recess above. Angle buttresses to west end and 2-light reticulated window set in broad shallow projection which rises to support octagonal, castellated bell turret with cusped ogee-headed openings. 2-bay chancel with similar windows and arched, 3-light reticulated east window. Tall octagonal chimney to south vestry. Foliated cross finials to east gable and nave east gable. Interior has panelled wood ceilings with bosses; and friezes with inscriptions carved in relief. The tomb is 1670, the walls probably of similar date, the statues C18. The walls are partly random rubble and partly bedrock. The tomb, set in the wall has random rubble facade with ashlar door surround; its interior is cut from the solid rock. Statues sandstone. Wall, approx 40 yds long and approx 15 fthigh with flat coping and, set on top, three Janus-headed busts. To left the tomb. The doorway has continuous chamfered surround with rounded shoulders. Interior is tunnel-vaulted and has 2 inscriptions; one, in stone, reads Here lyeth the Body of Madame Babington Who was laid in this Sepulchre the 9th of September 1670 My time is past as you may see I viewed the dead as you do me One day you'll lie as low as I And some will look on thee. the other, painted on wood, looks later but is recorded in the early C19.
