Church. 1891 by Dunn, Hanson and Dunn. Ashlar with Lakeland slate roof. Nave, chancel, north transept, south vestries, south porch and south-west turret 5-bay nave has 2-light windows with mixed Perpendicular and Flamboyant tracery. Similar tracery to glazed sides of porch and to large 4-light nave east window. West end (ritual east) is polygonal apse having shafted 2-light windows with Geometric tracery. Figures of Christ and Virgin and Child in carved tabernacles beneath west window. Fine carving also to capitals of window shafts and to 3 niches with shields and foliage in transept west wall; and many ornamental gargoyles. Gabled nave roof with steeply ridged coping, and ridge tiles in form of intersecting round arches. Octagonal bell turret with cusped openings, gargoyles and spirelet. Obelisk c.2.7 metres square. 3-metres high base part has plinth and square cornice, above which a tapering shaft rises to a flattened pyramidal cap; total height c.12 metres. Inscribed panel on east side of base: NOT TO COMMEMORATE THE PUBLIC VIRTUES AND HEROIC ACHIEVEMENTS OF NELSON WHICH IS THE DUTY OF ENGLAND BUT TO THE MEMORY OF PRIVATE FRIENDSHIP THIS ERECTION IS DEDICATED BY ALEXANDER DAVISON SWARLAND HALL On cornice above 'VICTORY 21ST OCTOBER 1805' and on shaft 'ENGLAND EXPECTS EVERY MAN TO DO HIS DUTY'. Remodelling in C14/15 style. 4-bay south wall with plinth and 2-light windows; built into wall between windows an early C19 sundial, unusual inscribed slab to Anne Harbottle (?) 1517 with incised shears, and 1783 pedimental mural monument. Similar windows on north of transept and in wall further west. 5-light east window with quatrefoil panel over; coped east gable with finial cross. Vestry/organ chamber has early C19 lancets on north and east. Tower of 2 stages divided by chamfered string; 2-light west window. Single bell openings with roughly- arched heads on north, south and west; weathering of higher-pitched 1827 roof visible on east. Band below 1903 embattled parapet with crocketed angle pinnacles. Porch with diagonal buttresses, moulded plinth and cornice; boarded double doors in moulded arch, flat parapet with cross fleury. Interior: 1827 south doorway within porch has panelled double doors under moulded round arch with imposts and beaded keystone, holding re-set C12 tympanum with diaper pattern. Segmental arch to tower, 4-centred arch to transept and elliptical arch to organ chamber. Hammer-beam roof. Furnishings and fittings mostly 1903. Panelled dado with brattished rail, stalls, screens to organ chamber and tower, pews and pulpit. Mosaic floored sanctuary. Good quality east window of Virgin and Child. Mural monument to William Reed, 1860, who died while engaged in the performance of his duties as resident engineer on the Calcutta and South Eastern Railway. Bell in tower (not seen), inscribed 'Thos. Ogle, Esq., 1681'. The north transept was built by Mr. Baker for the accommodation of his family and other inhabitants of West Hartford. J. Octagonal lighthouse-like tower rises from ridge, with slightly bowed sides and small casement windows below the pyramidal cap. Interior: the tower still houses the tank which supplied water to calcium carbide in the generator (removed) beneath, producing acetylene to provide gas lighting. The second section is a 3-storey tower: 6-panel door with fanlight and side lights; on 1st floor round-headed windows and a balcony on large moulded corbels, the parapet with pierced circles; 2nd floor has 3 similar windows, with tracery with heads of sexfoil circles in the outer lights and an 8- pointed star in the centre light; also a balcony with similar corbels, and iron parapet. Tall top parapet with blank Romanesque arcading. Flanking sections are cross gabled. They each have 3 round-headed windows on the ground floor and 3 windows on 1st floor with similar tracery to tower. In the gables are pierced quatrefoils surrounded by small circles. Right section has 2-storey canted bay window with 3 round-headed windows on ground floor. On 1st floor each light has tracery of 2 trefoils with 2 circles over;open arcaded parapet. Steeply-pitched gabled roofs. Tall ridge and end stacks with little gabled roofs over each chimney pot. On left return similar detail. Roof hipped to left, with stepped-and- corniced ridge stack. Attached 3-step mounting block near left end. Similar 3-bay left return with 2 ground-floor windows blind. Projecting right part shows similar doorway re-set from demolished part and various sashes, some renewed and in re-set surrounds; rainwater head inscribed RR 1799 on inner return. Rear of wing shows central projection with boarded door and 4-pane overlight in rusticated surround, 12-pane sash above and hipped roof; projecting part to right shows blocked elliptical arch in raised alternating-block surround on inner return. At rear of front block is G III R rainwater head from Old Cavalry Buildings in Canterbury. Interior: Front block has 3 segmental-arched fireplaces of former kitchen in rear wall; bedrooms above, formerly nurseries, have fielded-panel doors and coved ceilings with enriched cornices. Set back to right and left are single-storey outbuildings with stable and boarded doors and small windows; pent roofs against taller yard wall behind. Side walls each have gateway with square pyramid-capped piers (one pier of east gateway cut back to widen gate), and coping ramped up to join taller north wall. South end of west wall links to Stable (q.v.). Yard walls have low-pitched coping. Attached to rear face of north wall at west end is midden enclosed by 1-metre high walls with similar coping. Roughly squared stone with tooled stone parapet. Single segmental arch, chamfered parapet of large blocks clamped together. The more widely splayed south abutment has a drain with a stone spout on the west. Known locally as the 'Roman Bridge', and sited on the line of Dere Street. The arch and north abutment may be C17 (1603 : OS record card) with parapet rebuilt in C18 or C19, but the south abutment incorporates at least 2 phases of medieval or earlier masonry. , 2013-01-29 1986-06-18

Similar windows on returns and similar doorway to rear. Chamfered offsets at ground and 1st floor levels. Moulded eaves cornice and pyramidal roof.
