Tudor panelled-arched inner door. Above and in slightly- projecting cross-gabled left bay are 12-pane sashes in chamfered surrounds, with floating cornices over. Gabled roofs with ridged coping and kneelers. Rendered brick ridge and end stacks. 3-bay garden front on left return has projecting cross-gabled centre bay with 2-light window on ground floor and 3-light above. Similar 12-pane sashes. 2-storey canted bay window to rear. On right return a large 3-light mullioned and transomed stair window. Interior: Tudor-style doors and fireplaces. Central projecting porch, now glazed, added to round headed doorway: Tuscan columns, cornice and blocking course with small panel in centre; steps with railings, curled at bottom step; half-glazed door with round headed light above with pointed glazing. Altered mid C19 by the Alnwick Castle estate office and again in 1926. Ashlar with Welsh slate roof. Earlier work in Gothick style. C19 parts in Tudor style. A courtyard house. Mid-C19 irregular south front. To left a large castellated 3-storey section with canted oriel window and several paired lancets; projecting from this an extension of 1926 in Gothick style. Recessed L-plan section to right has C18 masonry, plinth and string course but C19 detail including round- headed doorway and 2-light mullioned windows; gabled roof with kneelers. Right return 5 bays. Left 2 bays in Tudor style. Right 3 bays have 6-pane sashes under hoodmoulds on ground floor, 9-pane sashes with Tudor-arched heads and intersecting glazing bars on first floor. Left return has similar detail but irregular openings. Rear five bays with central tall round-headed carriage arch under gable, two- bay, single-storey linking ranges and two-storey, cross-gabled end bays with Gothick windows. Centre and end bays were formerly castellated. Interior has 2 staircases with stick balusters. Several 6-panel doors and internal shutters. II Parish Church, 1836 on new site, replacing St. Andrews, Greymare Hill (q.v.); organ chamber mid-C19, chancel 1903. Squared stone with cut dressings; graduated Lakeland slate roof. Nave with south porch and north-east organ chamber, chancel with 5-sided apse. Early C19 parts in C13 style, chancel Free C13/C14 style. Chamfered plinth. Porch has studded door in double-chamfered pointed arch with chamfered hood; blind lancet over in steeply-pitched coped gable with moulded kneelers. East of porch 3 lancets; 3 similar windows on north of nave and 2 in west end. Coped gable with moulded kneelers. West bellcote on moulded corbels: twin pointed openings under coped gablet. Organ chamber half-hipped to north with lancet window and corbelled hip. Chancel has 2 early C19 lancets re-set on south, cinquefoil- headed lights to apse and stepped sill string. Beneath central light, panel with ornate canopied niches, to Walton-Wilson family. Wrought-iron ridge ornament and finial cross. Interior: Plain chamfered arch to south door. Double-chamfered 4-centred arch to organ chamber; richly-moulded chancel arch in C13 style. Pilasters and string course to chancel; credence table and piscina with shelf. Rubble (rendered and painted on front), plain-tiled roofs and stone chimney stacks. Rectangular- plan pele tower with wing on left. Slightly-projecting 3-storey pele tower: one-bay street front and 2 bay returns; low plinth; sashes and casements in architraves; loop at left (lighting mural stair) in later cable-moulded surround; incised band beneath top storey; projecting panelled flat-coped parapet on rendered corbels; pitched roof with blocked window; C18 corniced lateral stack at right. 3-storey, 2-bay wing: low plinth; 4-panel door at right in architrave with frieze and cornice; door under distyle Tuscan porch; 2-light windows in architraves with replaced sashes and casements (central mullion removed from ground-floor windows); 3 round plaques on top storey (fire-insurance mark on central plaque); panelled flat-coped parapet above string; pitched roof with rebuilt stone left end stack. 2 cylindrical tapering water-spouts on right return of pele-tower parapet. Exposed original corbels and parapet on rear of pele tower. Interior: pele tower has 2-flight mural stone stair in left return wall; stone fireplace on second floor with moulded 2-order segmental arch on corbels supporting massive lintel. Wing has 4-flight dogleg staircase with ramped handrail and stick balusters; 2 pairs of upper crucks halved and crossed at apex. At west end a stone stile with 5 worn stone steps, and a gateway of 1860 with square corniced piers with pyramidal caps. At east end, in the corner, the head and base of a medieval cross, reset in C18. The gateway has 5 steps and four piers, 2 with pyramidal caps and 2 with domed caps. Probably mid C19 but brought to Unthank c.1900. Rock-faced masonry with ashlar dressings. Terrace retaining wall has rounded projections at east end, in centre and at north-west corner, from which it returns south for a short distance. Balustrade with urn balusters and flat moulded coping, between tooled ashlar piers with urn finials; some finials replaced by carvings of birds and animals. Flights of steps in centre and at each end of wall. Further flights from drive down onto terrace, in centre and near west end. Ashlar. Castellated Gothic style. Massive square front block with square side towers and 8-sided apsidal back. 3 storeys, 3 bays. Central Tudor-arched carriage entry in 2-storey pointed-arched recess with triple-chamfered arch; 2-light Decorated window on 1st floor and very large Civic crest on second floor. Canted outer bays have large broached buttresses at the corners. Small diamond-paned windows with shouldered lintels on 1st floor and large mullioned-and-transomed crosses with shouldered lintels on 2nd floor. Battlemented parapet on large close-set triple-stop corbels. Vaulted passageway through building has one bay of rib vault then pointed tunnel vault with transverse ribs. Interior: Gothic, stone imperial stair with plaster lierne vault. Former courtroom, now bar and restaurant, has elaborate Tudor-Gothic ceiling divided into 8 large triangles with large moulded principal ribs on arched braces; each triangle sub-divided by smaller ribs and cross ribs and with tracery at the apex. 8-sided, canted stone screen with 8 pointed-arched doorways, and pierced parapet with Tudor-rose panels. , 2013-01-29 1950-08-11
