Built as an elementary school from which boys passed to the Grammar School for a higher education. Now used as a public house. Stucco with stone cornice and quoins, scroll kneelers. Front to Bank Hill has inscribed datestone, and four 24-paned sash windows on each of two floors. Rear wing in L plan has five sash windows on each floor, facing Presbyterian Church. I 2. There was a fortress here in the C12, but it was often besieged, attacked and altered. In the beginning of the C17 a large town house was begun on the site, but after 1611 the castle was left to decline. A large part of the stonework was removed for building Holy Trinity Church, and later the greater part of the remains were swept away for the railway station on the site. Pair of octagonal lodges with plinth, freize, moulded cornice and tall blocking course with carved festoons; central domed recess and 12-pane sash windows in adjacent faces. Pyramidal roof with central octagonal stepped-and-corniced stack. Lodges linked to gatepiers by 3-bay Roman Doric screen closed by railings with spike finials. Broad piers with domed recesses carry carved bulls, painted white. Double gates with downswept tops, upcurved rail and lower rail of linked circles, and spike finials. Hipped roof with 2 stepped ridge stacks, the upper parts rendered. Left return shows similar fenestration, the right return blind windows. Central half-glazed doors, with glazing bars to first and second, flanked by wide sash windows. Sashes also to first and third bays of first floor, those in outer and central 2 bays breaking eaves under half-gabled dormers with overhanging hipped roofs. Eaves gutter corbels; banded ashlar chimneys. Farm manager's house, now farmhouse, to east of no. 3 not of special interest. Light red and cream brick in alternate bands of 4 courses; some stone dressings. Lakeland slate roof with tile ridge and brick stacks. Gothic style with 5-gabled front. 2 storeys and attic, 5 bays, defined by slope-topped, banded buttresses, paired at right; bays differ slightly in width. Enlarged square-headed cart entrance at ground floor right. 6-panel door in centre bay in wide partly-blocked 2-centred-arched opening with banded brick voussoirs. Other openings similar, narrower in second and third bays. Downstairs openings partly blocked and glazing changed. Upstairs each arch holds 3 stepped lancets in solid panels; top left window altered. Eaves broken by a gable above each bay, stone-coped with cross finial, and oculus within. Broken eaves gutter; lowered end stacks. 4 tie-rod ends at right under eaves. Historical note: Bolland Hall was built as a day industrial school for the half- neglected children on the north side of Newgate Street ....... It became a National Girls' School, and was amalgamated with St James's Church of England Schools in 1885. Acquired by the Presbyterians it was used as Mission School and Sunday School until 1937. Broad 1st floor band and narrow 1st floor sill band. 12-pane sashes on 1st floor. Steeply-pitched roof with kneelers and renewed brick end stacks. One-bay section recessed to left; late C17 or early C18. 3 storeys. Narrow 12-pane sashes with triple keystones and moulded sills. To left and contiguous with central section a 3-storey,3-bay range also with triple keystones but without the moulded sills. Steeply pitched gabled roof with kneelers and old brick ridge stack. Rear span: C17 section to left in old, thick masonry; large external chimney stack. Extended to right by Dobson in ashlar. 6-panel door in pedimented Tuscan entablature; 12- and 9-pane sashes. Interior: drawing room, of 1764: panelled walls with enriched moulding and dado rail, multi-moulded cornice with dentils, wood Rococo chimney piece with basket of flowers in the frieze. Dining room has large early C18 fireplace with segmental brick arch and stone relieving arch, large solid 2-panel door. Narrow, mainly 2-pane sashes, with moulded sills and roll-moulded edges to reveals. Outer 2 bays on each side have top cornices and castellated parapets with higher corniced and castellated corner turrets. Gabled roofs with corniced end and ridge stacks. 3-bay facade on left return has 2-storey centre and 3-storey castellated outer bays. Early C19 castellated porch with 6-panelled door flanked by Tuscan pilasters; cartouche over. Late C18 Gothick window above. Outer bays have sash windows with double-chamfered surrounds and parapets similar to front but each pierced with a vertical oval. Right bay is early C18, left bay an early C19 copy to create symmetry. To rear former segmental archway into courtyard, now blocked with C20 door, has moulded panel above inscribed CEJ 1768. Interior: Staircase with turned balusters, wreathed, ramped and moulded handrail, moulded soffit and panelled dado; large round-headed stair window opens on to courtyard; early C19 plaster ceiling with modillion cornice. Dining room: early C18 panelling with bolection moulded fireplace flanked by fluted pilasters; 2 round-headed niches. Drawing room, also panelled with fluted pilasters framing fireplace and a door; another doorway and a niche have panelled pilasters and panelled round-headed sopraporte; the niche has shaped shelves. North range has 3 linked sections. Central 2-storey, 5-bay stable: pair of boarded doors with flanking sashes and casements above; roof with coped gables, shaped kneelers and 2 louvred lanterns on ridge. Lower 2-storey, 5-bay coach house on east: segmental coach arch, horse-mounting block, flanking sashes, boarded doors and casements above; roof has coped east gable and end stacks. Tall single-storey, 3-bay stable on west has pair of boarded doors; flanking sashes. Altered west range has 3 linked sections: tall central section with large C20 vehicle opening under gabled canopy; tall single-storey, 2-bay north section has 2 boarded doors and joins west end of north range; single-storey, 2-bay south section has boarded door, hit-and-miss window and roof hipped over south return. L-plan cart shed/loose-boxes with lofts over (on rear of north range): 2 storeys, each arm 4 bays; segmental archways on square piers (some blocked); Dutch door near re-entrant angle; hit-and-miss windows above; roof hipped over returns. Renewed 15-pane top-hung casements in original openings with wedge lintels and projecting sills. Gabled roof with end stacks. Round- headed stair window, with intersecting glazing bars, to rear. Rusticated segmental carriage arch adjoins to left and has original 16-pane casements to left and above. No. 14 adjoins further to left. 2 storeys. C20 door with overlight and wedge lintel. Tooled sandstone ashlar, graduated green slate roofs and ashlar chimneys. 4 ranges around service court on north-east corner of main block. Main block. 3-storey, 5-bay south (entrance) front has plinth and sill bands. Pair of doors with fanlight and side lights behind tetrastyle Roman Doric porch. 12-pane sashes and square 6-pane sashes (on second floor) in architraves. Pedimented central window on first floor, in splayed architrave with balustraded apron, is flanked by sashes with pulvinated friezes and cornices. Eaves cornice. hipped roof with 2 ridge stacks. Similar 5-bay east return with elongated ground-floor windows'aid added 2-storey, canted dining-room bay in same style. Venetian stair window on set-back 3-bay section of west return; single-storey, 2-bay link on rear to service court. Service court. South range: single-storey, 3-bay centre has pedimented doorway, flanking 12-pane sashes in architraves and clock tower on ridge with cupola on arcade of 8 Tuscan columns; flanking 2-storey, 3-bay pedimented pavilions have 12-pane sashes in architraves flanked by niches with 6-pane sashes above; hipped roof. Altered east range: wide 2-storey, 3-bay centre and projecting pedimented end bays; central Venetian doorway and Venetian windows in end bays, all recessed under round arches; 12-pane sashes elsewhere; hipped roof. 2-storey north and west ranges, linked by segmental archway, are altered and have boarded doors and sashes. Interior not seen but contains high-quality contemporary plasterwork, chimney- pieces etc., as detailed in the articles cited below. Lean-to shed on west range and later C19 addition on north range of service court are not of special interest.
