Squared stone (except for rubble in ground floor left return), cut dressings; stone slate roof. 2 storeys, 5 bays, symmetrical, chamfered plinth. Central 6-panel door with overlight in wave-moulded raised stone surround with shaped lintel top; 12-pane sash windows with raised lintels and stepped keystones. Coped left gable on moulded kneelers; stepped-and-corniced end stacks. Left return shows two 4-pane attic casements. Rear elevation shows twin projecting wings, that to right extended by Lutyens. Interior: some contemporary fireplaces with later ironwork. Panelled shutters, transverse ceiling beam in sitting room with swelled chamfer stops of C17 type. Dog-leg open-string stair up to attic; urn-on-vase balusters, moulded, ramped and wreathed handrail, moulded newel post at base, shaped tread ends. Roof structure of collar-beam trusses with overlapped apices carrying ridge, the joints nailed rather than pegged. South elevation in 2 sections: main block 2 storeys, 4 bays, irregular: studded door in chamfered surround with hoodmould; two 3-light windows on left and one on right. 2-light windows above. Sundial above left of door inscribed 1717, SK. All windows leaded casements in double-chamfered surrounds, some renewed, with 4-centred-arched lights and hollow-chamfered hoodmoulds. Right-gable coped, with stepped-and-corniced stack; double stack on ridge. Slightly-projecting cross-gabled 3-storey left bay: similar 3-light windows, the upper transomed, and smaller 2-light window on 2nd floor. Left return of wing shows projecting stack with corbelled-out projection on left; scattered fenestration, mostly C20; 2-storey C20 bay on far left. Rear elevation of main block shows C16 lst-floor windows of two 4-centred-arched lights to either side of small C20 stair wing. Inner return of wing on right shows two old 2-light windows, the upper lacking its mullion. Interior: Dining room (hall) has large fireplace with moulded surround partly cut away; sitting room (kitchen) has large segmental-arched fireplace with rounded arris. Oak room in wing has smaller fireplace in moulded surround re-set from 1st floor. Contemporary ceilings with hollow stop-chamfered beams and grooved joists. Several doorways with chamfered surrounds; doorways and windows show segmental rear arches. Pair of 2-centred-arched doorways where north wall joins wing; one with chamfered arch,another,blocked, with stepped arch. Segmental arch above carried newel stair starting from 1st floor, where part of stairwell and 2 square-headed doorways remain. Smaller C16 fireplaces on 1st floor. Roof of main block shows 7 principal-rafter trusses with collars, perhaps re-set, and chamfered single-light window now opening into roof of wing. Historical Note. The house may have been the main half of a castle with curtain wall and half-round towers. Licence to crenellate granted to Robert de Ogle 1341. Hutchinson in 1776 records the remains of a circular tower to east of the house, demolished when gable end rebuilt and farm buildings added. Blind west and north walls build against adjoining buildings. Canted east end has three 3-light, pointed arch, Geometrical tracery windows with continuous cill band. South wall has a single pointed arched glazing bar sash with Gothick glazing, then 3 similar pointed arch windows with wooden y- tracery , beyond a small cross mullion window above the porch, then a 3-light pointed arch Geometrical tracery window and to the east a narrow lancet. The projecting porch has a south-west doorway and to south a short 3-light pointed arch Geometrical tracery window. INTERIOR has moulded and pointed chancel arch with triple shaft responds and traceried wooden panels in the spandrels. Gilded and painted wooden rood suspended from the chancel arch. Boarded wooden roofs with diamond pattern panelling to nave and built-in former alterpiece painting (associated with the exile of King Charles X of France form 1830) to chancel. Wooden Gothick tracery arches applied to north and east walls (re-sited original screen or arcade.) Wooden west gallery with Gothic panel front. Wooden pew and Minton tile floor. Interior: Interesting glass throughout, especially nave south window of 1862 depicting dates of important buildings including the Ark in 2248 B.C. and Ellingham Church in 1862. Elaborate brasswork including oil lamps on brackets and lectern with branching candelabra. Wall monuments to Haggerston family in south transept, especially Carnaby Haggerston, 1756 with a garlanded urn and rococo detail. North transept, wall monument to Phillis wife of Edmund Craster. She died December 20th 1813 in the 23rd year of her age leaving a daughter, who at her baptism received the name of her dear mother and soon after followed her into a better world, aged 15 days. The eaves courses are of slate. Three storeys towards Quay Walls and four to the rear where there is a rearward wing enclosing a courtyard. The front range is eight windows in breadth and has two wide entrances from Quay Walls and an external stairway rising to a central doorway at first floor level. From the lower level of the quay a passageway through the walls gives on to the lower ground floor and to the rear courtyard. The interior has open galleries at each level, each with a central row of timber posts. Quay Walls at this point forms part of the Elizabethan walled defences enclosing the town and No 3 is built into them.
