C16 or early C17, extended C18, altered 1810-20. Random rubble with ashlar chimneys and ashlar repairs to rear wing. Welsh slate roof. L-plan with C18 and early C19 additions on right return forming U-plan. Single-storey lean-to links rear ranges. Facade: 2 storeys, 4 bays; the left 2 bays are the older section with much thicker walls. C20 door and porch in 3rd bay. 12-pane sashes with projecting sills. Gabled roof with flat coping. Renewed brick end stacks; corniced ridge stack with acroteria; similar stack on gable of rear wing. Interior: Internal cross wall to right of second bay c.54 inches thick; Formerly external rear wall of this section also c.50 inches thick; former ground-floor doorway of this section, now a cupboard, has Tudor-arched lintel. Front wall of older part c.40 inches thick. Late C18 addition has thinner walls, staircase with stick balusters, 6-panel doors and shutters. The old section, remodelled c.1810 has 6-panel doors with fluted surrounds and paterae; shutters also have fluted surrounds. Short one-bay rear wing also has walls on ground floor c.40 inches thick. Ashlar with Welsh slate and lead roofs. 2 storeys plus attic. A large irregular Tudor-style building. Garden front of 3 broad bays. Slightly projecting centre bay framed by octagonal turrets has 2-storey canted and embattled bay window under a shaped gable with heraldic shield, flanking obelisk finials and an octagonal chimney at apex. Next are recessed ?-bays with 2-light windows then full bays with 5-light windows on ground floor, 2-light windows under hoodmoulds on first floor under shaped gables. To right a recessed single-storey wing, with 5 tall, one-light windows and a conservatory with central gabled porch. Entrance side, also 3 bays, has an embattled porte-cochere with octagonal turrets, a recessed bay with 5-light mullion-and-transom window and a projecting bay with an embattled canted oriel. To left a long, recessed service wing with 2-light windows, hoodmoulds on ground floor. All main bays in house break forward from wall face, have shaped gables over and friezes of quatrefoils with Tudor roses above ground floor. Friezes linked by continuous bands. Most of house has parapet with blind castellation. Many tall, corniced, diagonally-set chimneys. Interior has a Gothic style decoration: Dining room has coffered ceiling, fireplace, panelled dado with built-in sideboard. Library has panels with Decorated tracery, and panelled Tudor ceiling. Ballroom is in 2 parts. Both have coffered ceilings with pendants, also friezes and fireplaces, one marble the other wood and classical with triple Corinthian colonettes. Small window off-centre. 1st floor, 4 windows with pivoted upper sections. Angles and all openings have flush quoins; and openings are chamfered. Ridged stone coping with kneelers and square peaks. Later east building of 2 storeys, 4 bays. Slatted upper windows. 3 irregularly-placed doors and part-slatted windows on ground floor. Quoins and chamfers similar to earlier building. Ashlar with Scottish slate roof. Palladian style. Centre block, 2 storeys with high basement, 5 bays. Balustraded steps up to central doorway in the piano nobile. Pedimented 3-bay centre breaks forward slightly and has 4 giant engaged Ionic columns with 2 flanking giant Ionic pilasters. Paired similar pilasters at each end. Rusticated basement with four 6-pane sashes. Doorway in architrave with pulvinated frieze and semicircular pediment.12-pane sashes with sill string. Outer bays have eared chambranle architraves, pediments and balustraded aprons; a bold string links the pediments. 6-pane sashes on top floor. Dentilled cornice, hipped roof with 2 tall corniced ridge stacks. Dobson's wings, remarkably sympathatic in style, 3 bays with one-bay end pavilions. Tall rusticated basement, 12-pane sashes. Pavilion windows have cornices on brackets. Dentilled cornice. Pavilions have small 6-pane sash above the cornice. Pyramidal roofs. Rear entrance has tetrastyle Ionic porch in antis. 3-storey tower features flank the porch and are themselves flanked by 1?-storey, 3-bay sections. Interior largely gutted for renovation at time of survey. Fragments of Paine plasterwork retained behind replacement ceilings. 2 marble fireplaces with Ionic columns; Dobson staircase with cast-iron balusters to be replaced after restoration.
