Rear wall has 2 flanking stacks, that to right projecting and stepped; octagonal shafts and moulded cornices. Monolithic gate piers with simple pyramidal caps, linked by walls with chamfered coping to similar coursed-stone outer piers. Hipped roof with 2 tall stepped ridge stacks, with panelled shafts and broad swept cornices. Attached gateway to right has panelled piers and capitals with pomegranate finials, holding decorative wrought-iron gate. Right return shows projecting Tuscan porch with panelled double doors under radial fanlight and balustraded parapet. 2 storey domestic wing to rear. On left a 3-storey recessed linking bay with 1st floor band, triple ground floor sash of 1920, 1st floor 12-pane sash under pedimented cornice and 2nd floor 12-pane sash. Large 1920 extension to left: 2 storeys, 3+3 bays. Right part set back behind Tuscan tetrastyle portico with balustrade above; left part has central bow with balustraded parapet. South elevation shows central pointed chamfered doorway to basement and scattered chamfered loops; above cornice, remains of taller turret at south- west corner. East elevation shows similar doorway at 1st floor level with window of 2 trefoil-headed lights (mullion gone) to right, also various chamfered loops; west elevation shows similar 2-light 1st-floor window, north elevation only loops. Interior: vaulted lobby with doorway to stair on right and hole broken through wall on left into former prison originally accessible only via trapdoor from painted chamber above. Main basement barrel vault partly fallen at north end. Painted chamber, with remains of C16 mural decoration, on south at 1st floor level, and garderobe to north-west. Similar windows in rear elevation of 1-storey wing, and old blocked chamfered doorway. To right of coach arch is a slightly projecting late C19 rough ashlar end bay with one shouldered window per floor. Formerly the archway gave out to the stable yard and theatre at the rear. Walls enclose a square-plan garden; privy near south-west corner; wash house at north-west corner; lean-to shed on centre of outer face of north wall. Flat-coped walls. Tall c.35-metre long-double-skin north wall was formerly heated by flues linked to 3 tiers of small segmental-headed coal furnaces, now blocked but still visible on outer face; several battered abutments on outer face. 45-metre long east wall has ramped up north section with 2 stepped buttresses. Lower 40-metre long south wall has rounded south-west corner. Similar 30-metre long west wall has off-centre doorway with alternating jambs is ramped up at junction with wash house. Small privy, built inside garden on rear of raised section of wall, has partly-glazed 6-panel door and wood seat with 3 openings. Single-storey, 3- bay wash house: east bay in garden has 16-pane sash and slate roof with end stack; other 2 bays are roofless. Single-storey, 2-bay lean-to shed on outer face of north wall has 2 segmental arches and a low pent roof. Segmental-headed windows have surrounds and aprons with banded rustication. Central pair of 3-panel doors and 3-pane overlight. 8-pane sashes with thick glazing bars on first floor; replaced 12-pane sashes elsewhere. Steep hipped roof with swept eaves. 2 stacks rise from rear wall. C19 stone bay window on left return. Single- storey, 2-bay addition with pitched roof and corniced stack and section of flat-coped wall with elliptical archway on right return. Rear wing: 2-storey, 3-bay section has horse-mounting block, replaced sashes and a round-arched stair window; lower 2-storey, 2-bay section incorporates a moulded Tudor-arched doorway with Latin inscription to Rev. Major Allgood and date 1666. Flat-coped yard walls with quadrant ramp on side of rear section. 3 linked single-storey outshuts across rear. Interior greatly altered in C19. As a result original parapet with chamfered coping was rebuilt above an inserted section of snecked-stone walling. Parapet has rebuilt splayed ends.
