Ashlar with moulded cill string to 1st floor and cill band to 2nd floor. Slightly tented slate roof, hipped at corner; 4 brick chimneys. Late glazed sash windows, 6 on 2nd floor to Clayport Street. First floor windows have moulded architraves and pediments, 3 with carved tympana including the date 1866 and the initials JL, JL. and EA to east and JL to south ( which has one window with arch headed glazing). Ground floor part painted. 1866 shop front to east: panelled pilasters and shouldered window, round headed doorways with foliate caps, dogtooth cornice. Central boarded door with 4-pane overlight, in raised stone surround. 12-pane sash windows with slightly projecting wedge lintels and sills. Stone end stacks. Lower l-bay extension to left. Outbuilding set back to right is a former cottage. Small 4-pane sash on 1st floor and recessed section to far right with small part-slatted window inserted in blocked door. Stone ridge stack. Rear elevation of house shows central 9-pane fixed stair window with slightly projecting wedge lintel and sill. Interior: plain c18 fireplaces, stair with swept grip handrail and stick balusters. T-plan: 2-storey, one-bay block with single-storey, 3-bay wing at right-angles across rear. Tudor style. Chamfered plinths. Single-light and 2-light windows in chamfered surrounds: some under hoodmoulds; some blocked and some with replaced sashes. 2-storey, gable-fronted block: small canted oriel window on first floor; steeply-pitched roof has coped gables with shaped kneelers and finial at apex; cross-axial chimney with 3 cylindrical stacks at rear end. Single-storey wing across rear: similar roof details and central cross-axial chimney with 2 cylindrical stacks; entry via doorway on right rear; later C19 one-bay addition on left rear. All openings have flat-arched lintels, those on 1st floor with later relieving arches above. Slightly-projecting wings have tripartite sashes (ground floor left altered to French window)and similar band at higher level; tumbled-in gables with slit vents to attics, plain bargeboards. Hipped roof linking gabled roofs of wings. 2 transverse stacks with bands and stepped cornices. Left return shows massive central buttress with C19 glazed door to left and margined sash to right, both within C20 glazed porches. 3 12-pane sashes above. Rear elevation rendered; tall round-headed stair window with Gothick glazing, Yorkshire sash and 2 other sashes, all with glazing bars. Interior: moulded keyed wooden arches to stairwell. Altered stair of c.1700 with column balusters and moulded grip handrail, handrail capable of restoration. Slightly-projecting 2- and 4-panel doors, some with 2-pane overlights; C19 marble fireplaces and panelled shutters. Late C19 openings on front: replaced door in flush surround with alternating jambs at right; replaced sashes. Other small blocked window openings in front and returns are visible from inside only. Steeply-pitched roof with overhanging eaves. Large square- plan end stacks with top ledges and water tables; left end stack has re-set head corbel above ledge. Left return: roll-moulded, square-headed doorway with alternating jambs and massive lintel; chimney flue on stone relieving arch inserted behind doorway; blocked loop towards rear and small blocked opening above. Added rear outshut has late C20 fenestration; steeply-pitched pent roof interrupted at left by horizontal dormer window. Interior: c.l.5-metre thick walls; wide stone chimney flues on both gable ends; several small blocked window openings with internal splays; ground-floor room has adzed ceiling beams and a spiral stone stair to right of front door (stair probably in situ and possibly a unique feature in a bastle-house); 2 first-floor rooms with ceiling beams of heavy scantling - room at right has blocked doorway on rear; roof has heavy A-frame truss on a cambered tie beam; blocked loops in attic flanking both chimney flues. Range dividing yards ends in loose box with rebated segmental arch on east. Yard walls have arched coping. South elevation shows reverse- stepped gable end of barn and former cottage with boarded door, 12-pane Yorkshire sash and brick stack. A picturesque and little-altered group. Rubble with stone dressings, later C16 work more massive rubble. Roughly square in plan. 4 storeys; rectangular stair turret at west end of north face. Elevation to street (east): blocked rectangular chamfered loop just above ground level with small inserted window over, 1st floor window formerly of 2 lights, monolithic head with 2-centred arches, 2nd-floor rectangular chamfered window with a pair of raised inverted shields on the lintel. Weathering of a pitched roof or gablet above. Hollow- chamfered course carries oversailing 3rd floor with a pair of rectangular windows one above the other, and a corbelled cornice which formerly supported a parapet. Stair turret has 3 chamfered loops. Right return has blocked Tudor-arched door partly concealed by the stair turret, and a rectangular chamfered lst-floor loop. Left return has chamfered loops to the 1st and 3rd floors and a small slit to the 2nd. 2 stone spouts project from the moulded parapet. To the left a buttress-like projection is part of the earlier house. Rear elevation shows inserted door and much patching; several doorways with chamfered surrounds, some blocked, in stair turret. To left of turret one jamb of a ground-floor window of the former north range. Interior; at 1st and 2nd floor levels doorways with monolithic Tudor-arched heads, now blocked; to right of the 2nd-floor door is a blocked chamfered window, looking into the tower, i.e. part of the gable of the earlier manor house. At 3rd floor level the remains of a fireplace. Lower section of stair turret now infilled; upper part retains its stone newel stair, with near the top a circular gunloop on the north. The heraldry on the tower, now defaced, is thought to relate to Sir Thomas Dacre, ruler of Hexhamshire 1515-1526. II Remains of lead smelting mill, late C18. Coursed roughly-squared stone with dressings, soffits of arches lined with brick (header bond). A length of 4-metre thick wall pierced by 2 tall pointed arches with square-section hoodmoulds, beyond which the wall changes direction to run up the steep valley side. The only remnant of the important Dukesfield Smelting Mill; possibly the superstructure carrying the flues from the smelting furnaces to a chimney further up the valley side. , 2013-01-29 1986-06-18

Early C18 with later C18 and C19 alterations and additions. Coursed rubble with dressings. Front range has graduated green slate roof; stair wing and additions have purple slate roofs. Dressed stone chimneys. T-plan main block (front range and stair wing) with C19 additions on right return and rear of stair wing. 2-storey, 3-bay garden front: low plinth and squared quoins; central doorway in architrave with frieze and pediment; replaced sashes in raised surrounds above and to right of doorway; projecting C19 2-storey rectangular-plan bay at left with sashes in 2-light mullioned windows; roof has coped gables, shaped kneelers and end stacks. Blocked original single-light and mullioned 2-light windows on first floor of right return. 2-storey gabled stair wing on centre rear of front range. Wide 2-storey canted bay with sashes and hipped roof added on right return of stair wing. 2-storey, T-plan service wing, added on rear of stair wing, has mainly replaced sashes and pitched roofs with ridge stacks.
