Broached corners lead to high bell stage with a tall lancet on each side and triple-shafted columns at the angles; gablet above each side. Tall octagonal needle spire. 6-bay nave has lancets under labels with head stops. Buttresses between each bay. West end has arched door; above 7-light stepped lancets, alternately open and blank, with shafts and shaft rings. 2-bay chancel with 3-light Decorated east window. Single-storey vestry attached to chancel by short linking passage. Decorated 3-light window flanked by 2 saints and niches. After 1830 for Mr. James incorporating the masonry of an C18 house which may in turn contain earlier work. Extended to rear 1904 by F.W. Rich for Howard Pease. Dressed stone with ashlar dressings, Welsh slate roofs. Castellated Tudor style. Complex and irregular plan. Front has large castellated porch left of centre, with Tudor-arched entry and shields with crests. Large tower to left has C18 masonry; 3 storeys with 3-light mullioned and mullioned-and-transomed windows. Two-storey dining room section to right of porch is also older masonry; its windows are early C20 casements, a 4-light mullioned-and-transomed window on ground floor, two 2-light mullioned windows above. Irregular 4-bay section to right has one- and 2-light windows. All Victorian windows have original 8-pane sashes in each light. End sections have corbel tables with small close-set rounded corbels. Centre section has parapet projecting on broach chamfer. Battlements with many higher corner turrets projecting qqbroad double chamfer. Gabled roofs with tall corniced ridge and end stacks. To rear additions of 1904: to right a castellated tower with boldly concave coping and elegantly-curved water spouts; to left a double-span section with 16-pane sashes and steeply-pitched roofs. Interior: mainly of 1904. Dining room has panelling, a large wood fireplace with the Pease crest in the overmantel and 4 stained-glass roundels. Drawing room has an older marble fireplace, brought from elsewhere, with paired Ionic columns and frieze with the She-wolf suckling Romulus and Remus. In lower left-hand corner two segmental arches over the mill race which passes through the building. Lower 2-storey section to right is older in its masonry but has early C20 openings. It was extended to right c.1930. Single-storey section to left includes the dye house and the drying room. Interior: Water wheels were replaced late C19 by a turbine which survives. Also much early C19 gearing, and a waulk hammer or fulling hammer. Beneath the floor of the dye house 2 brick furnaces. The drying house has a perforated iron floor and, below the roof, rows of racks. Building dated 1861, designed by Peter Tate and built by R. Wylie and Co. (see plaques on tank) for the North Eastern Railway Company. Iron water tank on stone base (red ashlar sandstone on front and right returns; dressed sandstone on rear and left return). Cast iron water columns. Water tank building: one-storey base; 3 round arches with chamfered arch bands, on square piers with roll-moulded impost blocks. Arches with radial glazing and weather-boarded infill. 2 stepped bands above arcade. Tank made of iron plates bolted together. 7 plates on front and 5 on returns. Each plate has cross-braced ribs; central plates on all sides have oval panels with engineer's and maker's names, date and crowning sea-horse motif. Similar right return of 2 bays. Plain rear and left return. The water columns are situated on 2 platforms to the west of the tank building. Each column has a ball finial and a counter-weighted swinging arm with a leather hose. Coped gables. Intermediate bays have tall tripartite sashes. All openings in recessed and hollow-chamfered surrounds. Coped left gable with corniced stone stack; tall corniced stone stacks flank centre bay. Right gable capped by bellcote carried on 4 block corbels.
