Graduated Lakeland slate roof, stone stacks. South elevation 2 storeys, 5 bays, symmetrical. Brick in irregular, largely stretcher, bond. Plinth, sill bands, 1st floor band, modillion eaves cornice. Central renewed glazed door with patterned fanlight, in eared architrave with pulvinated frieze,cornice and pediment. Plate-glass sash windows with wedge lintels cut to represent alternately-raised voussoirs; ground floor sill band steped down beneath sills. Overlapped-slab coping to gables, with rebuilt end stacks. Left return shows rear quoins of early C18 house with blocked stone-surround doorway above, beneath roof weathering of removed structure. Rear elevation similar to front, brick in English garden wall bond 1 and 3. Doorway in eared architrave in porch which has renewed door flanked by rusticated pilasters with moulded bases; moulded cornice with pediment, later infill, rendered, to sides. Interior renewed after serious fire in 1969. Central spine wall, rear wall of early C18 house, 1.2 metre thick; probably remnant of an earlier defensible structure. Largely 1801 by Patterson of Edinburgh but incorporating earlier masonry and with building continuing throughout the C19. Ashlar with Lakeland slate roof. A building of classical character but in castellated Tudor style. Entrance front, main block: 3 storeys, 3 bays with a 4-storey central tower porch projecting and having diagonal corners with a single-storey bow-fronted entrance between. 2-leaf, 6-panelled door in tripartite doorcase with segmental fanlight. Mullioned-and-transomed windows under hoodmoulds. Tower has heavy corbel table under battlements. Flanking bays have moulded cornice beneath battlements. 2 bays to right in similar style, and round corner tower are part of banqueting wing on right return. Banqueting wing: 2 storeys, 7 bays with central 3-bay shallow bow window, and round corner towers. Rear facade similar but the central bow is 3 storeys high and set in tower-like projection. Interior has oval entrance hall with niches. 3-storey cantilevered stair with wrought-iron balusters; oval glass dome over. Main rooms on 1st floor including oval room above entrance with anthemion frieze and Chinese wallpaper. Oval saloon with glass dome and 8 doors, 4 with pediments and 4 with decorative sopraporte. The room behind this has a swivel fireplace which was shared with the saloon. Many good fireplaces. Banqueting wing roofless and decaying at time of survey. , 2013-01-29 1986-05-15

Central pair of 6-panel doors in chamfered Tudor-arched surround under hoodmould. Flanking 2-light chamfered- mullioned windows under hoodmoulds with 10-pane sashes in each light. Deep overhanging eaves forming a verandah on front and returns; front verandah on 6 thin stone posts set diagonally. Pyramidal roof has diagonally-set central stack with chamfered top band and 2 ornamental chimney pots. Slightly-shorter returns have verandahs supported on 4 posts. 2-light window on right return. Single-storey bay on rear has replaced casement in chamfered surround, moderately-pitched roof and stone rear-end stack. Higham of Wakefield and Newcastle. Squared stone with dressings, grey slate roof. Cruciform plan with central tower and spire, 3-bay north nave aisle and north organ chamber, south porch. Free Early English style with good detail and much foliage carving. Stepped buttresses between bays and paired at angles; sill string course. Four-bay nave with porch in second bay. Side windows paired lancets with paired rear arches divided by free-standing shafts; west end has two lancets, divided by a stepped buttress, and a rose window over. Transept gables similar without the rose. Three-bay chancel with single lancets in side walls, triple in the east end. Central tower has triple-lancet belfry openings below a corbel table of trefoiled arches; stone broach spire. Interior: heavily-moulded arcade and crossing arches with dog-tooth decoration. Tierceron vault under tower; roof timbers carried on ornate corbels. Contemporary fittings, including windows by Powell. Carved reredos of 1891 flanked by trefoil-headed marble panels. The church was built by Rev. and Mrs.J.A. Blackett Ord, in memory of her uncle William Ord from whom she inherited the Whitfield Estate. , 2013-01-29 1967-11-24

Low parapet, defined by band at track level, has projecting coping and breaks forward over piers and cutwaters to form pedestrian refuges. Right bay of 1 storey and attic only, with half- dormer. Left corner tower has moulded eaves corbel table and pyramidal roof. Large stack on end of right wing; tall ridge stacks. Left return shows similar treatment. Rear wing containing conservatory and billiard room has been demolished Interior: Complete and largely unaltered original features include: hall screen with Frosterley Marble column and stone stair with wrought- iron balustrade. Drawing room with carved marble fireplace, deep moulded cornice and centre rose Dining Room with similar cornice painted in original colours, panelled ceiling and carved stone fireplace with good interior metalwork; linked study and library with carved bookcases,which have embossed leather dustflaps, and 2 more stone fireplaces with good internal metalwork. Throughout the house all the original fireplaces remain and all the woodwork including elaborately-panelled doors and shutters, those in the dining room a vertical sliding type concealed in the lower walls. Probably early C17 re-using earlier masonry. Top floor added 1705. Squared stone. 3 storeys, 70 ft. high by 25 ft.square. East side has 2-leaf boarded door in Tudor-arched surround. 1st floor string. 1st floor has round-arched recess and above that an inscription recording repairs in 1760. Clock on second floor. On 3rd floor, round-headed louvred bell openings in roll-moulded surrounds with moulded impost blocks and keystones. Cornice and parapet with moulded coping. Remodelled c.1850 and further alterations 1881. The earlier house was demolished 1958-65. Squared stone with ashlar dressings; slate roofs. Entrance (south) front 2 storeys, 5 bays, symmetrical. Chamfered plinth, rusticated quoins. Central enclosed Roman Ionic porch has panelled double doors with overlight in architrave, a 4-pane sash on each return, reeded frieze and balustraded parapet. 4-pane sash windows in architraves with scrolled swan-neck pediments differing in details; dressings re-tooled, and central 1st floor window inserted, in C19. Hipped roof, 2 stepped and corniced ridge stacks. Left return 3+2 narrower bays, similar windows with triangular pediments, blind at right. At left a 3-storey C19 flat-roofed tower with similar fenestration and balustrade. Right return 3 bays with similar fenestration. Interior; Most fittings are of mid-C19, including open-well stair with curtail step, carved tread ends, fluted balusters and moulded and wreathed handrail.
