North range of 2 builds: 2-storey, 3-bay shelter sheds with loft over; single-storey, 2-bay hemmel on south. Shelter shed: 2 elliptical arches, doorway and external stone stairway on ground floor facing yard; boarded door and 2 square openings above; low-pitched roof. To rear, 2 pent pigsties to west of entrance and later additions (not of interest) to east. East range (byre and hayloft) shows boarded door in alternating-block surround; old 12-pane casement and slit vents to 1st floor. West range (barn) shows 2 stable doors in alternating- block surrounds,and slit vents; to rear circular gingang with openings between piers largely walled up, conical roof with heavy tie-beam carrying roof structure. Tall wall on north of garden has flat coping and 4 square-headed rebated bee-boles with projecting sills. Wall of farmbuilding range on west of garden, with 3 similar recesses (one blocked) and 2 boarded doors, joins gate lodge (q.v.). Refenestrated and outshut built late C18/early C19, outshut heightened and other alterations 1907. Coursed roughly-squared stone with cut dressings; slate roof. South elevation 2 storeys, 4 irregular bays. Bay 2 doorway in late C19 wooden porch, and remains of 3 earlier arched doorways; 16-pane sash windows in raised tooled- and-margined surrounds (that on 1st floor bay 3 is 1907 insertion). Coped gables; stepped left end stack, right end stack rebuilt on old base. Left return shows several blocked windows including cinquefoil-headed light with arms of Prior Smithson in spandrels. Right return shows blocked chamfered light to attic. Interior: in rear wall of original house, 2 windows of 2 cinquefoil-headed lights under square head with hoodmould, again with arms of Prior Smithson. 6-bay roof has tie-beam trusses with curved principals and collars, one (formerly 3) level of purlins and ridge. The heraldry suggests the bunting lodge was built by Thomas Smithson (prior 1491-1524) although earlier medieval fabric may be incorporated. Dressed stone, graduated green slate roofs and stone chimneys; glazed iron canopy on rear range. 4 ranges round a rectangular stable yard. Tudor/Gothic style. Single-storey, 5-bay front range. Taller central square-plan tower; flanking walls break back; projecting canted end bays. Projecting embattled parapets. Tower has moulded triangular-headed archway with clock face and flanking cross- loops above. Featureless flanking walls. End bays have 3-light chamfered- mullioned windows with latticed casements; moulded octagonal plaques on parapet (plaque on left bay dated 1903). 2-storey, 6-bay rear range. Central paired doorways flanked by elliptical coach arches with doorways in end bays. Six 2-light windows in chamfered surrounds above (3 windows on left half retain sashes and mullion). Pediment over two centre bays contains boarded-over clock face in surround dated 1833. Low-pitched hipped roof with 4 ridge stacks. Canopy across entire ground floor of rear range has low pent glass roof on arch-braced iron brackets. Slate roofs. 1815 work in plain Classical style; 1860 extensions free neo-Tudor. Entrance front 2 storeys, 2:1:1:1:2 bays, irregular. Central projecting porch has part-glazed door under 5-pane overlight in segmental-pointed arch, slit window above; coped gable with moulded kneelers and finial. Above porch a slit window and eaves corbel table. Flanking gabled bays with 3-light windows under hoodmoulds. Far right, set-back, 2-bay 1815 section has plinth, 1st floor band and eaves cornice; 12-pane sashes in architraves,those on 1st floor smaller. Far left, set-back 2-bay section with varied fenestration including tall cross window to servants' stair; eaves corbel table. Stepped and corniced stacks to left end and to ridge. Return walls, that on left twin-gabled, of 1965 rock-faced masonry with re-set sash windows. Rear (garden) elevation in similar style has wide canted bay of 1815 with altered sash windows in architraves, the central now a door. Paired sash window to right and 1st floor cross windows of c,1900. Interior. 1.2 metre thick wall between stair hall and drawing room is the south wall of the earlier house. Elaborate fittings and decoration mostly of c.1860. The mid-Victorian main stair, heavily Classical in style, was brought, along with other fittings (including the pediments above the dining-room windows), from Pallion (Sunderland) c.1900. Ornate plaster ceilings in dining room and stair hall, and frieze in sitting room. Right part has French window and 12-pane sashes, all in chamfered surrounds. Coped gables with moulded kneelers; stepped and corniced end and 2 ridge stacks. Returns each show outlines of earlier lower gables, that to right with blocked stone-surround doors. Rear elevation shows projecting central wing with windows in raised stone surrounds with panelled jambs; to left C18 outshut with various sash windows, to right blocked 1st-floor window in old chamfered surround. Interior: west and centre parts of main block show walls over 1 metre thick. Founded 1137 but most visible remains of c.1180. Sandstone. Large parts of the cloister have been re-erected; pointed and round arches with paired slender columns and waterleaf capitals. East of this, the doorway to the chapter house, also re-erected, with round arch, 2 orders of columns and waterleaf capitals. The remains of the church lie to the north. Standing are parts of a large north window, and part of a C15 screen, with cinquefoil heads to lights, in the north transept. Many other fragments lie around and footings of many walls.
