Original block has inserted boarded door with alternating tooled and margined jambs in 2nd bay, and inserted pitching door over. Extension has renewed door in eared architrave at left of 1st bay. 2-light chamfered mullioned windows with moulded dripstones, ground floor window in 3rd bay having lost its mullion. Stone stacks on ridge and right gable. Right return has small blocked attic window in chamfered surround and, set back to right, the end of the outshut with C18 flat-faced 2-light mullioned window and later Cl9 sash above. Rear elevation; outshut I? storeys; boarded door with alternating tooled and margined jambs, flat-faced 2-light mullioned window to right, 2-light chamfered mullioned window over. Wall of original block has 2-light chamfered mullioned window and small window with chamfered surround. Brick lean-to not of interest. Interior of house much altered. The hall stands on a medieval site, a steep-sided mound which was probably fortified, a seat of the Pratt family who forfeited it to the Crown in the reign of Edward I. End bays have full-height canted bay windows with band and sill bands, and pyramidal roofs. 12-pane sashes to lower floors, 6-pane above. Modillion eaves cornice. Hipped roof with tall corniced lateral stacks. Wings each 2 storeys, 3 bays + 1 bay link to centre: plinth, sill bands, moulded eaves cornice. Broad end pilasters with channeled rustication. Ground floors of link bays with rustication forming voussoirs of arched openings with double doors and radial-glazed fanlights; each wing has central tripartite sash on ground floor, 12-pane sashes above, all in rusticated surrounds, the lower with keystones. Hipped roofs. Returns show triplets of similar sashes. West front shows similar detail in curved facade, the centre 3 bays recessed behind giant Ionic colonnade in antis, with paired sashes; oculi in attics. Scattered fenestration in wings. Rear elevation. Centre 1771 block has Ionic loggia with paired columns in antis (centre bay now glazed); tripartite stair window under round arch above, flanked by 12- and 8-pane sashes; 6- and 4- pane sashes to 2nd floors. Wings have pedimented gables with oculi; returns show Venetian windows in heavy rusticated surrounds. Interior: Entrance hall with Roman Doric screen and Shaw-type freestone fireplace. Large panelled library, dining room and drawing room; all decorative features by Shaw in pastiche of C18 style, but on a larger scale. Groin- vaulted lobbies between principal rooms. Stone cross windows with cornices. Gabled roof with kneelers and coping and 2 tall renewed brick stacks on stone bases. Left return, i.e. to rear of tower is largely medieval. It is in 2 sections: 1st section next to tower predates the tower. Of this period only masonry survives. It has C17 stepped buttress and large external stack on corbels at 1st floor level. C17 2- and 3-light mullioned windows. Left of this a projecting cross wing which in part also predates the tower. Of this period masonry and a doorway inside with shouldered lintel. The rest is part of C15 hall house of which much was demolished in C17. It now has C18 and early C19 door and windows. Gabled roofs with brick stacks on stone bases. Space between these ranges is partly filled in with later building including present entrance on right return, made Georgian in mid C20. Interior: Tower has tunnel-vaulted ground floor, doors with 4-centred heads and stone newel stair. C17 house has open-well stair with twisted balusters. Slit windows, except for two 3-light mullioned windows on north of tower; embattled parapets. To north-east a tall enclosure wall with embattled coping, stepped up and down slope,runs east, south and east again to end in square tower close to north- east corner of Castle (q.v.); blind slits and square-headed well recess in first part. To south-east a similar wall joins west wing of Castle; pent outbuildings on north have 3 boarded doors and several small windows.
