Left return shows 12-pane sash and gable with plain bargeboards; right return shows doorway and small window under similar gable. 3-bay rear elevation shows 12-pane sashes, paired at left end. Listed for historical interest. The Fountains Abbey Settlers Society was established in 1934 by Commander Clare Vyner to provide a rural settlement for unemployed craftsmen from Tyneside. 77 houses were built, mostly with attached lX acre plots and tenanted by families from Gateshead and elsewhere. Renewed door in bay 2 in surround re-using old dressings; renewed door in bay 4 in old chamfered surround. 6-pane sash windows in old openings with recessed chamfered surrounds, square on ground floor and lower above; as there is no evidence of removed mullions or transoms the inner frames must have been of timber. All openings (except bay 2 door) with hoodmoulds. One inserted 4-pane sash on ground floor in facsimile of old openings. Gables with moulded kneelers and raised reverse-stepped coping; end and ridge stacks. Left return shows small chamfered attic light. Rear elevation shows blocked 2-light mullioned window and large blind Gothick quatrefoil, above outshut. Interior not seen; said to be much altered. Unmoulded angle pilaster strips, plain top frieze and moulded cornice. Hipped roof with central stack. Similar decoration on 4-bay returns. Rear bay of house added in 1890's in similar style but with tripartite windows in moulded surrounds. C12, C14, c1796. Restored and gothicized 1873. Ashlar. North wall random rubble. Welsh and Lakeland slate roofs. West tower, nave, aisles, chancel and south torch. West tower of 3 stages. Lower 2 stages of 1769 have alternating rusticated quoins, flat band above ground floor and cornice above 1st floor. 3rd stage, added in 1873, has battlements, crocketed pinnacles and 2-stage wood-shingled spire. Cusped ogival windows added at same time, 2-light on ground floor, 1-light on 1st floor; also 2-light Decorated bell opening. 4-bay nave has Victorian south porch in left bay and 2-light windows with cusped ogival heads. 2-bay chancel has arched 2-light windows with quatrefoils over. Similar 3-light east window. Chancel north wall has 3 early medieval cross heads built in beneath tall cylindrical chimney and above lean-to boiler house with stone slate roof. Interior has early C13 south arcade with 3 piers and 2 responds which are Roman monolithic columns, probably from Corstopitum. They have round capitals, square abaci and double-chamfered pointed arches. C14 north arcade has octagonal piers, moulded capitals and similar arches. Chancel arch Victorian. Nave windows and doors have Victorian shouldered lintels. C19 canted panelled ceilings. Nave has arch-braced king-post trusses. 2 fonts, one a large re-used Roman altar, the other C13 with round bowl on square stem with broach-stopped chamfers and 4 colonettes with moulded capitals. C17 font cover with scrolls and turned finial. C17 choir stall backs and altar back; elaborately-carved panels are re-used domestic material. Organ by Father Schmidt, given in 1850, altered. Three 12-pane sash windows above; moulded eaves cornice. Hipped roof with corniced ridge stack. Right return (to Bridge Street) similar except for wood-framed shop window in place of centre doors; right end stack. 4-bay left return (to Dial Place), with 1st-floor sill band, shows part-glazed door in 2nd bay and 12-pane sash in blind doorway to right; boarded double doors, with 8-pane overlight, at left end and blind shop window at right end; 12-pane sashes above except for slatted window at left end; moulded eaves cornice. Yard closed on west by walls with low arched coping swept down to central gateway. Cartshed has former open arcade with monolithic piers and timber lintels, now fitted with boarded double doors; far right 2-storey part with inserted panelled double doors under 12-pane overlight, and raised reverse-stepped gable copings; right return shows 16-pane Yorkshire sash and part-slatted window under timber lintel above. Projecting central porch tower; Tudor-arched doorway with Blackett shield and motto above and an elaborate canted oriel window on 1st floor. Projecting on right a symmetrical 6-bay service wing with 3-storey outer bays and centre with mullion-and-transom crosses on ground floor and gabled half-dormers above. Beyond this the stable court with 4 Tudor-arched carriage entries. Interior: very large, full-height Gothic hall with 2 tiers of pointed arches along south side, lst-floor windows with Geometric tracery on north and east sides and a huge Geometric window with stained glass,on west side; Gothic oak staircase with castellated newels; hammer-beam roof. By Rev. Hawes. Rock-faced, snecked stone with Welsh slate roof. Arts and Crafts style. Nave, chancel, south porch and north chapel. West end has large round window with rock-faced surround. 4-bay nave has south porch with round-headed doorway under canted catslide roof. The door has wood panels of leaf carving and text in lettering of the period. Overhanging eaves with curved wood struts on stone corbels. Some medieval fragments built into wall. Nave south wall has 3 wide short round-arched windows with radiating glazing bars and rock-faced voussoirs. North wall blank. Chancel has 4-light window in ashlar surround with segmental heads to lights. Also an elliptical-arched priest's door. East end blank except for 2 slit windows. Nave roof gabled. Higher chancel roof is half-hipped at east end and gabled at west end which projects as a bell turret on curved struts. Interior has canted wood boarded ceilings. Stone pointed arch to north chapel; also exposed stone jambs and rere arches of east end slit windows. Old octagonal font on C20 base. Low west gallery has panels of naturalistic carving. Hawes was curate of Gunnerton, later became Roman Catholic and emigrated to Australia where he built several churches. He then became a hermit in the Bahamas. North side of nave has old vestry to right and 2 windows with Y-tracery. North aisle east window is 3-light. Chancel south side has blocked priest's door and small low side lancet. 3 lancets with continuous hoodmoulds. East end has 3 stepped lancets with hoodmoulds, buttresses between. 2 lancets and low side window on north side. Gabled roof with flat coping and cross finials. Vane on bellcote. Aisle roofs low-pitched with parapets. Interior has C13 south door with continuous chamfer. 4-bay arcades. North arcade of c.1200 with round piers and capitals. 3 chamfered round arches with banded pink and white voussoirs; west bay is pointed arch, a C13 extension. South arcade has hollow-chamfered pointed arches and octagonal piers. Double chamfered C13 chancel arch. Remains of Saxon chancel arch visible above; also Saxon masonry. Trefoiled piscina in south aisle. Large medieval grave cover set in chancel north wall. East window by Mayer of Munich, chancel south window by Atkinson. On right a pair of 3-centred arches now holding small-paned casement windows, on left a 12-pane casement flanked by part-blocked doorways now holding sash windows; Yorkshire sashes above. Eaves band. Hipped roof with ridge stack. Single-storey west range shows three casements and a 3-centred carriage arch. 2-storey south range: at left end gateway with boarded double doors under flat 4-centred arch; panel above with Widdrington arms and clock in architrave set in a gablet with ball finial, flanked by scrolled brackets; open timber bellcote, with pyramidal roof and weathervane, above. Single-storey bay at far left is end of north wing of Hall (q.v.). Wall on east of yard has flat coping and gateway with square piers carrying tall vase finials.
