Vestry gable has string stepped over 3-light window with quatrefoiled round window above; 2-light window on south of sanctuary and 4-light east window. West end has string stepped over 3 trefoil-headed windows and round window with quatrefoils above. Coped gables with carved kneelers. Narrow flanking windows in architraves. Outer bays have shallow square bay windows with 2-light windows in architraves. 12-pane sash to each light. First floor has 12-pane sashes with cornice and architrave. 2-light window above door. Similar decoration on returns but rear bay has C18 masonry and the remains of ground and 1st floor sill bands. Older building incorporated in house to rear, possibly a bastle house, has walls c3ft. to 3ft.6 inches. Also further C17 and C18 masonry. Various windows C18 and early C19. Gabled roof with ridged coping,kneelers, ball finials and stone corniced ridge stacks. Plan: Built on sloping site, facing uphill; 3 rear wings and outshut. Front elevation in two sections. Both parts have plinth and rusticated quoins. Right part 3 storeys, 3 bays, symmetrical. Central door of 6 beaded panels, under patterned fanlight, in surround with fluted columns and open- pedimented hood. 12-pane sash window above. Outer bays have tripartite sashes to ground and 1st floors; 9-pane short sashes (centre renewed) to top floor. Moulded eaves cornice. Coped gables; stepped-and-corniced right end stack, left end stack rebuilt on old base. Lower left part 2 storeys + attic, 3 bays, symmetrical. Central 6-panel door, with 8-pane overlight, under cornice on console brackets; flanking tripartite sashes; 12-pane sashses above. Moulded eaves cornice broken by central open-pedimented half dormer holding paired renewed 9-pane short sashes. Coped left end gable. All windows have slightly-projecting sills. Right return: 2-bay gable end of front block shows blocked windows ground floor and 1st floor left, 12-pane sash 1st floor right and 9-pane short sashes to top floor. To right, behind C20 sun lounge, C18 3-bay rear wing with added C19 1st floor: central renewed door and ground-floor 12-pane sashes, all under keyed supra-lintels; renewed 12-pane sashes above; roof hipped to right. Left return and rear elevations show various sash and casement windows. Interior: Front block has 6-panel doors with beaded mouldings. Central panelled door with overlight, in raised stone surround. Tall, narrow windows with raised stone surrounds, now with C20 plate-glass casements. Bold cornice continuous round the house. Tall plain parapet. Very tall, steeply-pitched near- pyramidal roof with 2 large square ridge stacks and 3 original hipped dormers with 2-light casements. Interior: Drawing room has panels in eared architraves, C20 fireplace flanked by original full-height Ionic pilasters, wood modillion cornice, two 8-panel doors and a round-headed 12-panel door in keyed architrave. Staircase: Panelled dado. Boldly-moulded wreathed handrail, turned balusters, moulded tread ends. Two keyed, panelled arches on ground floor and 3 on 1st floor. Large panelled room on 1st floor, now subdivided into 2 bedrooms. It has 2 round-headed 10-panel doors in panelled reveals with fluted pilasters and keyed archivolts. Fireplace with bolection-moulded surround and full-height Corinthian pilasters. Extremely fine cornice with enriched modillions, egg- and-dart, and finely-detailed oak leaves and other foliage between the modillions. Round-headed niche with enriched moulded surround and shaped shelves. Also on the 1st floor a 3rd room with fielded panels and wood cornice. In the attic four 2-panel doors. Original large oak principals dying into the wall face, with one row of trenched purlins. The house belonged to the Orde Family but its quality may be related to the fact that Margaret Orde was the mistress of Sir William Blackett of Wallington, and that her illegitimate daughter, also called Margaret, became Sir William's heir. The house was probably built before Margaret Orde senior's death in 1712. The interior decoration may date from after the house's full reversal to the Wallington estate in 1726. North Durham: J. Parapet with ornamental cresting and beasts with shields. 2-bay recessed sections have mid-C18 12-pane sashes in raised surrounds. Basement has 2-light mullioned windows. Projecting outer bays have 2-storey mullioned- and-transomed bow windows, shown with sashes in 1784. They have embattled parapets and beasts with shields. 12-pane sashes on 2nd floor. String course above each floor and embattled top parapet with round arches surmounted by beasts above outer bays and diagonally-set octagonal chimneys above each corner. Hipped roof. Left return has mid-C14 tower on left. Dressed stone. 4 storeys with bartizans and machicolations on corbels. Given classical detail to unify facade in mid C18. 3 storeys, 9 bays, 2:5:2. Recessed 5-bay centre has steps up to Roman Doric doorcase. 12-pane sashes in moulded surrounds. String course above each floor. Embattled parapet. Thomas Cave Winsom. Squared stone of near- ashlar quality, with ashlar band and eaves cornice; purple slate roof with yellow brick stacks. West (garden) elevation 2 storeys, 3 bays, symmetrical. Plinth and tooled 1st-floor band. Central blocked doorway; left bay has full-length small-paned sash; right has C20 small-paned glazed doors and overlight; moulded steps up at each side. 1st floor shows 16-pane sashes with slightly-projecting sills. Moulded eaves cornice. Coped gables; rebuilt end stacks, the left on old base. East elevation. Left-of-centre 4-panel door with patterned fanlight in surround with attached Tuscan piers and open-pedimented hood; right arched stair window holding 12-pane sash with intersecting head. At left end 12- pane sash. First-floor similar window with early C20 round window to left. At right end 12-pane sashes, the lower renewed. Interior: 6-panel doors, door surrounds and shutters all with beaded mouldings. Sitting Room has fireplace with wood surround of fluted Ionic columns carrying balustraded mantel, and egg-and-dart cornice.
