Late C18 by Robert Adam for the Duke of Northumberland; additions c.1850. Rough-faced stone with ashlar dressings; towers have flat roofs (not seen) except for Welsh slates on pent-roofed part of south tower. Screen wall with towers and turrets on crest of whinstone escarpment, commanding views west over Alnwick and east towards the sea. Castellated Gothick style. West elevation: Chamfered plinth. Main tower near left end has open base with segmental hollow-chamfered arch flanked by semi-octagonal buttresses with pyramidal tops below band; at 1st-floor level three 12-pane sash windows, with intersecting heads under round arches, set in recess with corbelled top; moulded string below embattled parapet. 1st floor band continued along flanking walls with smaller round arches to taller semicircular turrets with various shaped loops. Right lower wall has large semicircular bow and square turret, with quatrefoil and cruciform loops, and joins rectangular south tower. Tower has central bow containing ground- and 1st-floor 4-centred- arched windows (boarded over) and band on corbels below irregular parapet; lower pent part to far right. Rear elevation of main tower similar to front. Turret to left has boarded door under round arch on to newel stair, from which short wall walk leads to balcony, on left return of tower, with a central part-glazed door. South tower has quatrefoil loop to rear and boarded window openings in returns, under 4-centred or pointed arches. Wings added for Sir Edward Swinburne who died in 1786. North front added late C18 by William Newton for Sir John Swinburne. Ashlar with Lakeland slate roof. South front: Baroque. 2 storeys and basements, 5 bays. Divided by giant pilasters with rusticated bases, intermittent banded rustication to ground floor, and bulgy rustication above. Semicircular steps up to central door in elaborate surround; Corinthian columns carved with vine leaves, and bases with relief carvings of a beggar and a knight; scrolled pediment holding Swinburne coat of arms. 2-light mullioned windows with raised rounded surrounds carved with leaf garlands. Above outer ground-floor windows are dated sundials in frames of dogtooth. Above inner ground floor windows are carved flower vases. The dentil cornice is a replacement by Newton. Hipped roof with corniced ridge stacks. Similar detail on returns. East side has central doorway with surround of thick, naturalistic fruit and leaf carving; elaborate crest above. Recessed lower 5-bay wing has 12-pane sashes with projecting keystones. Ramped walls c. 20 yards long run south from ends of wings; wall to west has C17 doorway with scrolled pediment. North side: Classical style. 7-bay main block with 3-bay pedimented centre. Half-glazed door in open Tuscan porch. 12-pane sashes in architraves. Oeil-de- boeuf window in pediment. Lower L-plan 3-bay wings, with 6-bay inner returns enclosing forecourt, have 12-pane sashes in plain reveals with keystones. Interior: Hall has restrained mid C18 plaster ceiling, fielded panelling and Palladian doorcases. Similar ceiling in ground floor south-east room. This was hall range and has a blocked C14 window in gable end. Later, probably C16 building partly covers gable end of hall range. Entrance front is on left return. Doorway dated WW 1614 under hoodmould. It has angular flattened Tudor arch and finely-moulded surround. Square inset panel above with moulded surround. Above and to the left 2- and 3-light windows with hoodmoulds and ovolo-moulded mullions. Rear of front wing projects to left and has 3- and 4-light windows, one blocked, with plain chamfers and without hoodmoulds. Two 2-light similar windows to stair projection on right of door. Garden front has to left a 5-sided, 2-storey mullion-and-transom bay window with ovolo mouldings and moulded string above each floor. Right of this a 2-bay section with early C19 door and 16-pane sashes in flat raised surrounds; but there is also one small original C14 window above door to left and another blocked beside it. On left return a massive external stack, originally on corbels at 1st floor level but extended to ground and given crow-stepped top in C16 or C17. Interior of hall range to left of tower has, on 1st floor, a blocked C14 doorway with pointed arch and continuous chamfer; also a large blocked C14 window with segmental head on gable end below smaller window visible from outside. These indicate a former 1st floor hall. Square stone newel stair has doorways with chamfered surrounds and broach stops. It continues up into roof space and suggests vanished 3-storey wing. Central flush-panelled door under patterned overlight, in raised stone surround; 12-pane sash windows with slightly-projecting sills. Coped gables with stepped end stacks. To left tall wall, with arched coping and small casement, fronts the pent outbuilding and links to farm buildings (q.v.). Right return shows projecting semi-octagonal dairy, in surrounding 9-bay loggia with square piers and arched braces. Gablet with bargeboards over central entrance; double half-glazed doors in projecting chamfered surround, flanked by 2-light chamfered mullioned windows. Similar 3-light windows in flanking sections, all leaded latticed and margined casements with cloudy yellow glass. Canted hipped roof. Rear elevation of house shows flush-panelled door under raised shield-shaped tablet bearing date and initials T.D.; and 12-pane sash stair window with radial glazing in round-arched head.
