Aisleless 4-bay nave with south porch and north transept, small chancel with north vestry. Romanesque style. Nave has 4 round-arched single-light windows in double-chamfered surrounds on south, 2 similar windows on-north, and a wider round-arched west window; small arched bellcote on west gable. South porch has studded double doors under trefoil arch, and cross finial; inside porch panelled double doors with metal-latticed fanlight, under double-chamfered arch on moulded imposts. North transept has triplet of round-headed lights to north. Similar stepped triplet with circular light above in east end of chancel; single-light window on south to east of earlier blocked window. Ring cross finial on east gable. Interior: Plastered. Semicircular chancel arch, stepped towards nave, on worn imposts carried back as band along east wall of nave. Early C19 3-bay screen of moulded arches on slender round piers with scalloped caps, to north transept. Collar-beam roof trusses with upper king posts, those to transept and chancel with arch braces on moulded corbels, the latter with pierced infill and wallplate. Boarding between rafters painted blue spangled with gold stars. Small font with round shaft and moulded bowl dated '1732' in north transept; elaborate C19 Romanesque font in nave. Wrought-iron altar rails and Minton tiles in sanctuary. Coat of arms of Martha Burrill, d.1700, on south of chancel; similar painted coat of arms on north of nave. To left north-west wing 2 storeys + attics, 3 bays; various sash windows to lower floors; 2 segment-headed dormers with 8-pane Yorkshire sash and 2-pane casement. Coped gables, stepped-and-banded right end and 2 ridge stacks. North elevation shows similar treatment and gable bellcote with pointed opening on west wing. Tall stepped-and-corniced stacks with panelled shafts to ridge and right end. North-west wing, to left, above projecting basement of c.1950; 2 gabled bays; scattered small windows, and armorial panel at base of corbelled-out stack. South front: 2 storeys + attic, 3 + 2 bays. Left part has central C20 glazed double doors, 12-pane sash windows and C19 attic dormer on corbels, with quatrefoil above casement; right part has French windows in older openings and C20 balcony above. Roll mouldings around openings and to right corner of range. Crowstepped right gable end; stepped-and-corniced ridge and right end stacks. East (entrance) front, 5 gabled bays: projecting 2-storey porch with Tudor- arched doorway; 2- and 3-light windows, some transomed. 3-bay north-east wing to right. South elevation shows renewed door in C18 opening with small casement window in modified loop to left. lst-floor casement in blocked doorway opening of uncertain date, and 2 original windows at higher levels, each of 2 chamfered lancet lights, mullions now missing. Irregular stepped C18 parapet. West elevation shows remains of another early 2-light window above 2 later windows; C18 embattled parapet. North elevation shows 2-storey pent-roofed cottage inside tower, with various casement and sash windows; above cottage roof, in south wall, is a segmental rear arch, with window seats, of upper 2-light window. Remaining parts of tower east and north walls have C18 crowstepped coping. Cottage has pent single-storey part on exterior of north tower wall, with adjacent outbuilding. Interior of cottage not seen; tower walls 2.6 metres thick, except on north where there was probably a mural stair. Licence to crenellate was granted in 1343, but the architectural features probably pre-date this. Verandah has 4 tripartite entrances, with cusped and crocketed arches, between projections with similarly-arched niches flanked by fluted columns; inscribed frieze below openwork balcony balustrade with geometric and traceried patterns. Beneath verandah are niches and panelled door to foot of stair, copied in stone on other faces. Upper stages divided by fluted and quatrefoil friezes, with 1- and 2-light windows, and niches in projections, some with sills on fan corbels. Coade stone medallions of Duke and Duchess above 3rd-stage niches. Upper balcony, on fan corbels, has pierced quatrefoil balustrade. Top stage has panelled door under cusped arch, and crenellated parapet with large octagonal cup-shaped fire basket. Interior: stone newel stair, lit by windows with coved internal splays, stairhead ceiling with radial raised bands. Important landscape feature; its function as a viewing platform for the Duke's park is summed up by an inscribed tablet at lower balcony level: Circumspice! Hicks. Snecked stone with ashlar dressings; Lakeland slate roof. 5-bay aisled plan with no structural nave/chancel division, western narthex, cross-gabled east bay of north aisle as organ chamber, with truncated bell tower and sacristy on east. Late C14 style. Stepped buttresses between bays and set back at angles, chamfered plinth, sill string. 3-light windows to north and south, with part-blocked priest's door near east end on south. 2-light window at west end of north aisle and 4-light window to organ chamber with cruciform loop in gable above. Flat-roofed narthex has three 2-light windows on west; boarded double doors with scrolly ironwork under moulded arch, with sunk quatrefoils in spandrels, on each return. Large 4-light window above. 5-light east window with whirling mouchette in gable above; 3-light east window to south aisle. Lower stage of bell tower, octagonal at top, now forms link to sacristy which has boarded door under moulded round arch with trefoiled panels holding blank shields in spandrels. Coped gables with finial crosses; timber bellcote on nave roof. Interior: plastered double-chamfered arcades on octagonal piers with moulded caps and bases, and corbel responds. Arcade of 3 arches with broad chamfers, now glazed, to narthex. Boarded vault in main body of church and coffered ceilings over aisles, both with brattished wall plates. Carved pulpit and screens at east end of aisles. Octagonal stone font in simple C15 style. East window: Ascension as 1914-18 war memorial. The dedication is taken from the former medieval church at Sheepwash. Moulded cornice. Gabled roof with corniced ridge stacks and a large central octagonal corniced clock tower with stone drum and dome, this is based on the Tower of the Winds at Athens. Round-arched doorways and windows to lower floors, and arched doorway onto walkway from upper floor to cage. Hipped roof with flat-topped dormer and half dormer for winding cables, and raised louvre on ridge. Shaft head gear has skeletal frame partly encased in rectangular structure with 4 round-arched openings on east. Sinking of shaft commenced 1894; first coal produced Feb. 13, 1901. Steam engine replaced by electric winder in 1975. Final section turns westwards and then north again, and has rebuilt upper part with gabled coping, ending in rough ramp-down. Overall length 250 metres.
