Shildon House, Cottage (q.v.) and the later keeper's house survive from what was a considerable mining settlement in the C19. Vertical-panelled doors to left of bay 1, between bays 2 and 3 (in raised stone surround), between bays 4 and 5, pair between bays 6 and 7, and between bays 7 and 8. Various sash windows, (some renewed) most in hollow-chamfered surrounds, some C19 and some of earlier work re-set. Bay 8 windows in C18 block surrounds. Remains of a range of 3 large windows with double hollow-chamfered jambs on 1st floor of bays 4 and 5. 5 ridge stacks (one rebuilt in brick) and right end stack; roof hipped to left. Left return shows 2 small windows, the lower with glazing bars, in C18 stone surrounds. Rear elevation shows old projecting stack, and at far right blocked 2-light window with ovolo-moulded surround. Interior much altered. No. 17 has a C17 ground floor fireplace with a flat-pointed head in a square frame; a larger arched fireplace on the floor above is now covered over. Flanking C20 casements in old openings with similar hoodmoulds. Upper floors have 12-pane sashes with raised lintels and sills. Right (east) bay has margined sash with blocked door to left; similar window above and paired 8-pane sashes to 2nd floor, all windows in raised and tooled surrounds. Coped gables, stepped and corniced left end and ridge stacks. 4-step mounting block to left of door. C20 single-storey extension to far right, not of interest. 2-storey outshut to rear, altered fenestration. Interior much altered. 2 C17 fireplaces on 1st floor; flat-pointed arches in square frames, wave-moulded surrounds. Built as The Riding House by Thomas Errington, postmaster of Newcastle under the Commonwealth (initials on door lintel recut by Thomas Browell, a later tenant). Rear elevation shows gable end of mid-C18 stair wing (round-headed 12-pane sash with radial glazing in head, in surround with raised imposts and keystone) set back between later C18 north-west wing to right and pair of gabled late C181early C19 wings to left. Interior: Dower House West has stair with open string, stick balusters and ramped moulded handrail; moulded newels and carved tread ends. Drawing room in north-west wing has dentil cornice and 6-panel doors in panelled architraves. Teulon. Coursed rubble with cut quoins and dressings, green slate roof. Irregular cruciform plan. Free C13 style. Front elevation 1 storey, 5 bays, irregular. Bay 2 has projectbigable with transomed 3-light window and finial cross; stepped stack with ornate terracotta pot on left return. Flanking lower gabled porches with pointed arches and trefoiled finials; that to left now glazed, that to right holds door with decorative ironwork. Low block with coped left gable behind left porch. Full-height block behind right porch continues 2 bays to right, with paired lancets, block corbel table to eaves and coped right gable. Single-stepped buttresses; kneelers with sunk trefoiled panels; gabled dormers with slatted vents; all roofs steeply pitched. Returns show similar fenestration.
